BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatis (AD) is a chronic disease that often requires long-term treatment. Topical corticosteroids are the usual therapy for patients with AD, but prolonged usage can result in skin atrophy and other side-effects.
OBJECTIVES: In a randomized, double-blind, comparative study, to compare the efficacy and safety of a 6-month treatment period with 0.1% tacrolimus ointment vs. a corticosteroid ointment regimen in adults with moderate to severe AD.

Diaper dermatitis is one of the most common skin disorders in infants. The humid, moist environment under the diaper makes the skin more susceptible to injury from exposure to irritants particularly related to urine and feces. A gentle cleansing routine, frequent diaper changes, and a thick barrier cream help control this condition. Irritant diaper dermatitis should be distinguished from other skin conditions that may develop in this sensitive area.

Diaper dermatitis is a common problem in outpatient pediatric office settings. Topical ketoprofen (KP) is widely used because of its anti-inflammatory effect. However, photocontact dermatitis is a side-effect. Between May 2001 and June 2002, the Belgian Contact & Environmental Dermatitis Group conducted a prospective, open patch and photopatch test study in 20 patients suspected of KP dermatitis. PURPOSE/METHOD: A 33-year-old woman with a myopic neovascular lesion was treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin. She had a borde-line diabetes mellitus that finally needed treatment with a sulfonylurea. She underwent a second treatment with PDT that was uneventful, but 10 hours later she experienced severe skin photosensitivity reaction.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: As the use of verteporfin becomes more widespread around the world, physicians must be alert to the possibility of adverse side effects associated with its use and its interaction with other drugs.

Skin-protection products are used in the occupational field to protect the skin against hazards from the workplace. They are only to be used for non-toxic, non-cancerogenous and non-sensitizing low-grade irritants such as water, detergents, and cutting fluids and cannot replace other protective measures such as gloves. The recommendation of products mainly focuses on the physico-chemical properties of the irritant and the protective cream. More in vivo studies and intervention studies are needed to prove the efficacy of skin-protection products under real-life conditions.
