Stratum Corneum Biomarkers for Differentiating Irritant and Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Occupational hand dermatitis (HD) comprises irritant and allergic contact dermatitis (ICD and ACD), which share clinical features, often overlap, and may coexist with atopic dermatitis (AD), complicating diagnosis. The objective of this study is to explore whether stratum corneum (SC) biomarkers discriminate ICD from ACD. PATIENTS: We recruited 126 patients from the Occupational Dermato-allergology Clinics of the Amsterdam UMC. METHODS: SC samples were collected from lesional HD skin and patch test reactions to nickel, chromium, methylisothiazolinone, sodium lauryl sul

Dermorexia (Cosmeticorexia): A Narrative Review of the Emerging Phenomenon of Obsessive Skincare Behavior in the Digital Age.

The increasing use of visual social media has intensified societal pressure to achieve flawless skin and may contribute to excessive preoccupation with appearance and skincare. The emerging terms dermorexia and cosmeticorexia have been used to describe potentially compulsive skincare behaviors extending beyond conventional self-care. This narrative review examines the proposed concept of dermorexia, its conceptual overlap with recognized psychiatric conditions, potential risk factors and clinical manifestations, dermatological and psychological consequences, and implications for aesthetic prac

Toxicological evaluation in vitro of novel photosensitizers intended for photodynamic therapy.

Three selected photosensitizers (PS) with potential applications in PDT (ZnPcS2, TMPyP, PPIX) were evaluated for skin irritation, phototoxicity and sensitization using exclusively non-animal test methods. The experimental approach was based on OECD TG with protocol modifications to accommodate the specific requirements of photosensitizers testing. Reconstructed human epidermis (RhE) based assays were performed using adapted protocols derived from OECD TG 439 and OECD TG 498, while skin sensitization was assessed using methods based on OECD TG 442C and OECD TG 442D. TMPyP and PPIX showed no evi

Irritant contact dermatitis: beyond a diagnosis of exclusion.

Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is the most common form of contact dermatitis and a leading cause of occupational skin disease, but remains underrecognized relative to allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Direct chemical or physical injury to the epidermal barrier causes ICD, which can develop in anyone when exposure intensity or duration exceeds the skin's repair capacity. ICD is increasingly understood to involve more than barrier disruption: it is an innate immune-mediated inflammatory disorder involving keratinocyte-derived cytokines, neutrophil recruitment, C-C motif chemokine ligand 2-C-

Phytophotodermatitis: An under-recognized diagnostic pitfall in chemical burns.

BACKGROUND: Phytophotodermatitis is a rare and poorly recognized cause of chemical burns. It consists of a non-immunologic cutaneous reaction caused by exposure to plants containing photosensitizing substances, followed by ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. The clinical manifestations resemble those of second-degree burns. Numerous differential diagnoses are possible. Diagnosis is based on a detailed history, highlighting the characteristic temporal sequence of contact with a phototoxic substance followed by UV exposure. Treatment is mainly symptomatic. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to report

Evaluating Medicaid Coverage for Over-the-Counter Treatments for Diaper Dermatitis.

Diaper dermatitis is a common dermatologic condition in infancy, frequently managed with over-the-counter (OTC) products. We conducted a cross-sectional review of Medicaid Preferred Drug Lists across 49 states and the District of Columbia to evaluate coverage of 14 commonly used OTC diaper dermatitis treatments. Coverage varied widely by state and product class, with therapeutic agents, such as topical antifungals, low potency corticosteroids, and antibiotics, more frequently covered than preventive barrier products, such as petrolatum and zinc oxide. These findings reveal significant state-le

Phototoxic evaluation of agrochemicals by a newly developed in vitro UVB-induced phototoxicity test using human embryonic stem cell- or induced pluripotent stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Currently, no suitable method is available for detecting substances with phototoxic potential in the ultraviolet B (UVB) range. Assessments of UVB-induced phototoxicity are required by the European Food Safety Authority, particularly for substances that mainly absorb in the UVB range (UVB absorbers). Therefore, we developed a novel UVB-induced phototoxicity test using human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-/human induced pluripotential stem cell (hiPSC)-derived retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPEs). UVB irradiation did not significantly affect the viability of RPEs, suggesting their resistance to

PD-L1/Lag3 Bispecific Immune Checkpoint Blocking Nanocage Exhibits Potent Antitumor Activity beyond Dual Blockade of PD-L1 and Lag3.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Products containing detergents can damage the skin and give rise to irritant contact dermatitis. Therefore, attempts have been made to find less irritating detergents as well as substances decreasing undesired side-effects of detergents, and a novel approach is offered by betaine. The aim of the study has been to determine the irritating properties of some liquid soaps for personal hygiene and to map the effect of different concentrations of betaine using electrical impedance, trans-epidermal water loss and visual inspection. METHODS: Twenty-eight healthy subjects were patch

Penguins maintain effort, despite reduced dive efficiency, with limited physiological response under increased swimming workload.

In highly variable marine habitat, it is key to understand how free-ranging animals cope with variation in the energy cost of locomotion. Here, we experimentally tested how an apex marine predator, the king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) adjusted to an increase cost of locomotion when foraging at sea. We investigated the consequences of increased hydrodynamic drag on diving performance and physiology of a group of birds subject to externally-attached devices compared to control individuals. King penguins did not increase their locomotor effort to compensate for the additional drag but decr

[Hand eczema: comprehensive management and therapeutic perspectives in primary care].

Hand eczema is a common inflammatory dermatosis in primary care, characterized by erythema, pruritus, scaling, fissures, and functional impairment. It encompasses various clinical and etiological forms, either acute or chronic, related to irritant, allergic, or atopic mechanisms. When the condition persists for more than three months or recurs at least twice within one year, it is defined as chronic hand eczema. This represents one of the most prevalent dermatoses, with substantial clinical, occupational, and psychosocial impact. Its multifactorial pathogenesis involves genetic predisposition,

Effects of a transformer-based AI-based application to support incontinence-associated dermatitis and pressure injury assessment, nursing care and documentation: Controlled pilot intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in nursing care, including wound management. Differentiating pressure injuries from incontinence-associated dermatitis is clinically challenging, often leading to misclassification. Although AI-based wound assessment is advancing, few models specifically address incontinence-associated dermatitis, and clinical evidence remains limited. The KIADEKU project developed and piloted a transformer-based AI app to support care for these wounds. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot intervention study was to assess the impac

Approach to the Patient With Vulvar Disease.

The vulvar dermatologic examination is a crucial component of gynecologic and dermatologic practice, requiring a thorough understanding of normal anatomy and physiologic variations, and common pathologic conditions. This review outlines key elements of the history-taking process, including demographic factors, symptoms, product use, and relevant medical history, which help guide diagnostic evaluation. A structured approach to distinguishing normal anatomic variations from disease is emphasized, including the identification of physiological changes across the lifespan and common benign lesions

Sodium-activated Algerian bentonite with improved surface properties and topical barrier performance.

This study investigates whether sodium activation can turn an under-utilized Algerian calcium bentonite into a topical barrier-oriented clay with measurable barrier-relevant performance in a model of inflammatory skin barrier dysfunction. Raw bentonite from the Hamma Boughrara deposit (Tlemcen, Algeria) was purified and activated to obtain a sodium-enriched clay (MEA5). We systematically related mineralogical, textural, interfacial properties and selected pharmacopeial quality tests to in vivo performance in an irritant contact dermatitis model. Sodium activation yielded a montmorillonite rich

Enteral Green Beans in the Management of Neonatal Irritant Diaper Dermatitis.

Irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD) is frequently observed in neonatal intensive care units and is often exacerbated by chronic loose stools. Despite standard treatments, erosive or persistent IDD remains challenging to manage. We introduced pureed green beans into enteral feeds as a source of fiber to improve stool consistency and reduce skin breakdown. This intervention has been highly effective as an easy-to-use and safe non-topical intervention for treating IDD.

Dermoscopy of paederus dermatitis: Evolving patterns in a tropical irritant dermatosis.

Paederus dermatitis occurs due to contact with the vesicant rather than the bite. It can present as erythematous papules, plaques, vesicles, bulla and crusting. Its diagnosis dermatitis can be quite challenging, especially in cases where the patient does not recall any history of contact with the beetle, which is often the case. Biopsy, being an invasive diagnostic technique, is typically avoided. There is a paucity of studies describing the dermoscopic characteristics of dermatitis. This case series elucidates the dermoscopic features associated with it.
