BACKGROUND: The term severe cutaneous adverse reactions to drugs (SCAR) comprises of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms complex (DRESS), Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS-TEN) and drug-induced erythroderma or exfoliative dermatitis (ED). The present study aims at describing the epidemiological and clinical profile, probable cause and the extent of morbidity and mortality in patients with severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions.

Omenn syndrome is a rare combined immunodeficiency mostly associated with RAG1 and RAG2 mutations; the clinical manifestations are well-described and include neonatal erythroderma. Mortality due to opportunistic infections is a serious risk, and a timely diagnosis with a skin biopsy is an important part of the diagnostic workup. We wish to highlight key clinical features of Omenn syndrome and discuss the relevance of a skin biopsy.

The current case report presents a case of non-thymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis in an 8-year-old European Shorthair female cat. The animal displayed extensive alopecia and excessive peeling of the epidermis. There were no other apparent disorders, except for the skin lesions. From 2014-2019, 8 juvenile black bears (Ursus americanus) from different geographic regions were presented to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife because of emaciation, alopecia, and exfoliative dermatitis that resulted in death or euthanasia.
