Monkeypox (mpox) is the most significant orthopoxvirus (OPXV) infection in humans since smallpox eradication. The World Health Organization (WHO) has twice declared public health emergency of international concern due to the expansive spread of clade I and II mpox cases, thus prompting public health scientists to develop rapid and effective diagnostic tools. Clinical presentations of monkeypox can overlap with other vesiculopustular diseases, particularly those caused by Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV), complicating accurate diagnosis in decentralized or resource-limited settings. UNLABELLED: This meta-analysis compared peri-procedural and short-term outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in severe bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis, addressing TAVR's debated efficacy in this context. A systematic search of PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Embase up to January 2025. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed with the I2 statistic, with p < 0.05 as significant. 9 observational studies and 1 randomized controlled trial w

Accurate forecasting of infectious diseases drives modern public health interventions that reduce morbidity and mortality. However, accurate forecasting in real-time remains a challenge for the modeling community. Ensembling has emerged as a critical tool for accurate forecasting by leveraging multiple component (individual) models into a single weighted average. Traditional ensembling strategies have relied on bespoke component models that weight the contributions of individual models according to extensive historical data for specific diseases. This is impractical for an emerging disease, si

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer. Global viral eradication relies on specific criteria, including a single host species and effective vaccines, a feat successfully achieved with smallpox and rinderpest. Although measles is also a candidate for elimination, its progress has been hindered by vaccine hesitancy based on misinformation about vaccine safety. Similarly, HPV is an ideal candidate for eradication due to its strict human infectivity and the proven vaccine efficacy in reducing cancer rates and establishing herd immunity. We highlighted the growing global consensus on

Vaccination played a critical role in controlling the 2022 mpox outbreak in the United States, yet only a quarter of eligible individuals are estimated to be fully vaccinated. Using mixed methods, we analyzed cross-sectional data collected from 60 sexual and gender minority people with and without HIV (PWH and PWOH) in August 2022. We investigated willingness to receive an mpox vaccine and to participate in mpox vaccine research, as well as actual vaccine uptake and experiences, and compared results by HIV status. Two-thirds of participants (66.7%) had received at least one dose of the mpox va

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), which has garnered significant attention due to its global spread since its identification in 1970. In recent years, there has been a notable increase in cases outside Africa, particularly in 2022, when the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a public health emergency. The clinical presentation of monkeypox resembles that of smallpox, although it is atypical, especially concerning the sexually transmitted patterns that have prompted extensive academic investigation. MPXV primarily spreads through direct contact with

Women of transgender experience (WTE) have been disproportionately burdened by mpox. Using 2024 data from the New York City site of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance study among WTE and transfeminine people (TFP), we identified factors associated with receiving at least one dose of the mpox vaccine. Of 103 WTE/TFP, most identified as Hispanic/Latina and being born outside of the United States with 40% receiving at least one dose. Participants who self-reported having HIV were more than twice as likely to have received a dose (PR: 2.31; 95% CI: 1.20-4.47). Mpox vaccine outreach efforts m

Our survey of venue-attending men who have sex with men (MSM) in San Francisco (N=545) found that one year after the first reported case of mpox, 76% (95% CI 72-79%) self-reported receiving at least one vaccine dose and 58% (95% confidence interval [CI] 54-62%) received two doses. Vaccination was higher among MSM born outside the US (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-3.39), with some college or higher education (aOR 1.90, 95% CI 1.10-3.28), and seeing a healthcare provider in the last year (aOR 2.75, 95% CI 1.56-4.85). OBJECTIVE: Using the first reported case of mpox and HIV co-infection in Qinghai Province, China, as a case study, this paper examines the epidemiological characteristics and transmission dynamics of mpox-HIV co-infection in low-incidence settings, as well as systemic gaps in surveillance, diagnosis, and response. It aims to generate broadly applicable insights for mpox prevention and control in similar low-incidence regions worldwide.
METHODS: A retrospective epidemiological investigation was conducted involving Case A, a patient with mpox-HIV co-infection reported by a hospital in Qinghai P

BACKGROUND: Following the 2022 outbreak, vaccination against mpox became available in many European countries using a third-generation non-replicating smallpox vaccine (MVA-BN). It is primarily recommended for individuals at higher risk of exposure, including men who have sex with men (MSM), especially those reporting multiple partners, group sex, chemsex, or recent sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey about mpox vaccination uptake was conducted between October 2023 and October 2025 among MSM attendees of an STI/HIV center (Rome, Italy). An anonymous quest

INTRODUCTION: Mpox disproportionately affects people with HIV (PWH), yet little is known about mpox vaccine awareness and uptake in low- and middle-income countries. We evaluated mpox-related knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among PWH in the Dominican Republic to identify determinants of vaccine awareness and uptake.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of 98 PWH recruited through HIV clinics, community-based organizations and social networks (January-May 2025). The questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, mpox-related KAP, structural barriers and vacc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Human populations show striking phenotypic disparities in traits and diseases, including responses to infectious diseases (IDs). The impact of host genetic diversity on infection susceptibility and outcomes is increasingly recognized, yet remains largely unknown in Qatar. Here, we explored the distribution of infection-related host genetic variants in Qatar.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Infection-related genetic variants from the GWAS Catalog were analyzed in 6047 Qatari whole genomes from the Qatar Genome Program (QGP) and compared with populations from the 1000 Genomes

Smallpox was a major driver of population collapse in the Americas after European contact, yet the genetic identity of the causal strains remains unknown. Here, we report the first ancient smallpox genomes in the Americas, dating to approximately 1492-1631 common era (CE), recovered from two Inca-Colonial individuals in northern Chile. These genomes form a now-extinct lineage that diverged around 1296 CE, after the splitting of early medieval European strains but before the emergence of modern variola lineages, providing direct molecular evidence for smallpox introduction through European colo

This article discusses the intersections between vaccination and slavery in colonial Brazil, highlighting the arrival of the smallpox vaccine in Bahia and its spread to other regions of the Portuguese Empire including its holdings in Africa. We highlight the story of enslaved boys, who were primarily inoculated and vaccinated between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, through analysis of bibliographical and documentary sources that illustrate the actions of historical figures such as Felisberto Caldeira Brant, Francisco da Cunha Menezes and Francisco Ignácio Sequeira Nobre. Framing physical beauty as a barometer of health, this article charts the dialogue between early modern medical instruction (regimens and recipes) and figurative artworks. This dialogue took on new potency in the Renaissance with the widespread circulation of medical regimens and recipes in print, and reinvigorated cultural imagery that foregrounded the body. At the same time, the threat and lasting impact of infectious diseases on the skin, including smallpox and syphilis, and Europeans' growing contact with individuals from Africa, Asia and the Americas, heightened awareness of bodily vulner

BACKGROUND: Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic vaccination (MVA-BN) prevents mpox, whether offered subcutaneously or intradermally. Intradermal administration has been implemented as a dose-sparing strategy, but evidence on durability of protection and long-term clinical impact is limited. We evaluated mpox severity over time in a limited number of mpox cases following primary intradermal MVA-BN vaccination.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of laboratory-confirmed mpox diagnosed between January 2024 and October 2025 at a major HIV and sexual health center in Stockholm,

Half a century after smallpox eradication, this feat has not been repeated, although there is hope for the Guinea worm. This article examines whether two uncommon genital ulcerative diseases, donovanosis and chancroid, should be targeted for eradication. Many think that their decline has been such that they might be heading towards spontaneous eradication, following more effective treatments, integration of sexually transmitted infection management in primary healthcare, enhanced condom use by sex workers and promotion of male circumcision. However, examples of syphilis and mpox suggest sponta

UNLABELLED: Methotrexate (MTX) is a class of antifolate chemotherapeutics and immunosuppressants that are effectively used in the treatment regimen of cancer and autoimmune diseases. In the current MASLD era, methotrexate-induced hepatotoxicity must be understood in the context of host metabolic dysfunction, obesity, diabetes, and alcohol use that amplify oxidative and inflammatory liver injury. But its administration is being restricted due to hepatic toxicity, which increases asymptomatic in transaminases and progresses to fibrosis. This review examines the complex mechanisms underlying MTX-

Emerging infectious diseases have risen significantly in the twenty-first century as ecological disruption, climate change, expanding human-animal interfaces, and global mobility intensify opportunities for pathogen transmission. This review synthesizes historical and contemporary evidence across viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic threats to characterize how diverse pathogens emerge and spread. Foundational events such as the 1918 influenza pandemic, mid-century influenza pandemics, the emergence of HIV/AIDS, and the eradication of smallpox provide context for understanding modern disease
