Carbamazepine-Induced Oral Lichenoid Reaction: A Report of a Rare Case.

Lichenoid drug reactions (LDRs) are rare adverse effects that resemble lichen planus both clinically and histopathologically. Although cutaneous involvement is more common, oral manifestations are relatively uncommon. Carbamazepine, a widely used antiepileptic drug, has been associated with various cutaneous adverse reactions, but oral lichenoid reactions (OLRs) due to carbamazepine are rarely reported. In this case report, we present a 62-year-old male patient who developed painful white reticular plaques on the buccal mucosa and lateral borders of the tongue after using carbamazepine for app

Association Between Oral Lichen Planus and Thyroid Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: In recent years, various authors have suggested a potential association between oral lichen planus (OLP) and thyroid disease (TD), although other studies have failed to confirm a significant relationship. The available literature presents inconsistent and sometimes contradictory findings. Additionally, other conditions-such as anxiety and depression, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia-have also been linked with OLP. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 120 participants, comprising 60 patients diagnosed with OLP and 60 controls. Medical histories r

Association Between Dyslipidemia and Lichen Planus: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

Background Lichen planus (LP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the skin, mucous membranes, and nails. Several studies have reported a potential association between lichen planus and dyslipidemia, suggesting a possible link between this chronic inflammatory condition and metabolic disturbances. However, existing evidence has shown variable results across different populations. This study was conducted to further investigate the association between lichen planus and dyslipidemia. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Educat

The Esophageal Mucosa: Clues to Underlying Pathology.

Esophageal mucosal abnormalities, when accurately recognized, can provide clues to underlying pathology. In this article, we discuss strategies to enhance the detection and assessment of benign esophageal diseases during upper endoscopy by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). We provide a summary of skills required to perform high-quality EGD procedures from a technical standpoint, as well as a comprehensive description of the endoscopic appearance of the esophagus in health and in benign, organic diseases including eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), lymphocytic esophagitis and EoE variants, erosive

A Linear Affair: Blaschkoid Pattern in Lichen Planus Pigmentosus.

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is an acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation. Atypical presentations, such as linear or blaschkoid distribution, are exceedingly rare and may pose diagnostic challenges. We report a case of a 32-year-old male with pruritic, hyperpigmented, slate-gray to brown macules and patches distributed linearly along Blaschko's lines on the right upper back and upper limb. The diagnosis of LPP was corroborated by clinical appearance, dermoscopic examination, and histopathological analysis. Recognition of such unusual patterns is essential for accurate diagnosis and to diffe

Early diagnosis model of mycosis fungoides and five inflammatory skin diseases based on a multimodal data-based convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and early-stage MF is difficult to differentiate from erythematous inflammatory disease. With the exception of biopsy, noninvasive information such as a patient's medical history and clinical and dermoscopic images is of great significance for early diagnosis of MF. However, there is a lack of diagnostic models based on convolutional neural networks that can use multimodal information. OBJECTIVES: To develop an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning model based on multimodal information, to verify its

Image-Based Diagnostic Performance of LLMs vs CNNs for Oral Lichen Planus: Example-Guided and Differential Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The overlapping characteristics of oral lichen planus (OLP), a chronic oral mucosal inflammatory condition, with those of other oral lesions, present diagnostic challenges. Large language models (LLMs) with integrated computer-vision capabilities and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) constitute an alternative diagnostic modality. We evaluated the ability of seven LLMs, including both proprietary and open-source models, to detect OLP from intraoral images and generate differential diagnoses. METHODS: Using a dataset with 1,142 clinical photographs of histopathological

Solitary Lichen Planus Keratosis: A Potential Clinical and Dermoscopic Mimic of Malignant Skin Neoplasm.

Solitary lichen planus keratosis (SLPK) is a benign cutaneous lesion, often misdiagnosed due to its clinical and dermoscopic similarities to malignant conditions like basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and melanoma. We present two case reports: an 82-year-old male with an erythematous, scaly lesion on his back, and a 66-year-old female with an itchy lesion on her thigh while undergoing chemotherapy for multiple myeloma. Dermoscopic findings included orange-erythematous backgrounds with scales, sharp borders, telangiectasias, and shiny white blotches in both patients. Histopathological analysis confirm

Treatment of Benign Pigmented Lesions Using Lasers: A Scoping Review.

Lasers are widely employed in the treatment of melanocytic lesions. This scoping review evaluates 77 studies on the efficacy and safety of laser treatments for café-au-lait macules (CALMs), nevus of Ota (NOA), Becker's nevus (BN), lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP), and other pigmented lesions. The Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG), particularly the 1064 nm, is the most frequently utilized laser, demonstrating strong efficacy for NOA and other dermal pigmentary disorders. Medium-wavelength lasers, including the Q-switched ruby and Alexandrite lasers, also show promise, t

[Progress in clinicopathological diagnosis of oral potentially malignant disorders].

As the field of oral pathology has evolved, the nomenclature and classification of oral mucosal diseases with a remarkable risk of malignant transformation have undergone several modifications. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced the concept of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) as an alternative to the terms for oral precancerous lesions and precancerous conditions. In the consensus report by the WHO Collaborating Center for Oral Cancer of 2021, OPMD is defined as "any oral mucosal abnormality that is associated with a statistically increased risk of developing o

Acrokeratosis verruciformis of Hopf: A rare presentation in a young Indian female-A case report and review.

Acrokeratosis verruciformis of Hopf (AVH) is a rare dermatological disorder associated with keratotic lesions primarily on the dorsal surfaces of the hands and feet, caused by a missense mutation in the ATP2A2 gene. Here, we report the case of a 24-year-old woman presenting with multiple wart-like lesions on the hands, feet, and neck over four years. A V-shaped notch on the nails indicated nail dystrophy. The patient had no family history of similar symptoms and an unremarkable medical history. The histopathological examination of a skin biopsy revealed marked hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, papil

Vaccine-Induced Lichen Planus in a 12-Year-Old Patient: A Rare Pediatric Case.

We report a rare case of vaccine-induced lichen planus (LP) in a 12-year-old male patient who developed generalized pruritic, violaceous, flat-topped papules and plaques two weeks after receiving a tetanus vaccine following a puncture wound. Clinical evaluation, dermoscopic examination showing Wickham striae and follicular hyperkeratosis, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Vaccine-induced LP remains an uncommon but possible immune-mediated adverse reaction. Dermoscopy proved valuable for non-invasive diagnosis, aiding in distinguishing LP from other dermatologic conditions. This case
