[Measles: a persistent threat despite an effective vaccine].

Measles is a highly transmissible viral disease. Following a decrease in vaccination rate between 2020 and 2023 due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a new surge of cases is observed worldwide. No direct antiviral is currently licensed against measles. Young children and immunocompromised individuals are the most at risk to develop complications. The best way to prevent transmission and complications is through vaccination. Public health measures are required to break transmission chains and protect the most fragile ones. The aim of this article is to review the epidemiology and the virological aspe

What's Old Is New Again: Measles.

Measles is resurging in the United States, fueled by decreasing vaccination rates and rising vaccine hesitancy. Clinicians are confronted with a highly infectious vaccine-preventable disease that is unfamiliar to them because, as a result of routine childhood vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, measles was declared nonendemic in the United States in 2000 and many pediatricians have never seen a case. In this article, we provide an update on measles presentation, clinical course, and outcomes by reviewing the literature and sharing the expertise of senior pediatric infectious

A Nationwide Seroprevalence Study for Measles in Individuals of Fertile Age in Romania.

Background/Objectives: Romania remains endemic for measles due to suboptimal vaccine coverage rates. During the last three epidemics, the highest incidence of measles was recorded in children younger than 1 year, who should have been partially protected by maternal antibodies. A nationwide cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted on persons of fertile age, to evaluate potential immunity gaps in the population. Methods: Between June and October 2020, 959 serum samples were collected from individuals aged 25-44 years (46.5% females) from all the geographic regions in Romania. Measles I

Attention to COVID 19 pandemic resulted in increased measles cases and deaths in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on childhood routine immunization programs, resulting in increased measles mortalities and complications. In Zambia, the likelihood of measles-related deaths and complications in children was possibly increased because of high rates of unvaccinated children, late diagnosis, and poor case management, which could have been a consequence of exclusive focus on COVID-19 interventions. This study aimed at examining the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on measles mortality and its predictors among patients seen at health facilities in Zambia.

What is the current evidence base for measles vaccination earlier than 9 months of age?: Report from an informal technical consultation of the World Health Organization.

Measles is one of the most contagious vaccine preventable diseases, causing severe complications and deaths globally. While vaccination with a measles-containing vaccine (MCV) has prevented millions of measles deaths, recent trends, especially from low- and middle-income countries, are discouraging. Measles cases have increased since 2021 as MCV coverage has decreased; and an estimated 107,500 measles deaths, mostly in children under-five years, occurred in 2023. Thus, a renewed focus on proven and innovative strategies to control measles is needed. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommen

Low Rate of Documented Measles Immunity in a Large Urban HIV Clinic.

People with HIV (PWH) have increased risk of complications from measles. Only 11.2% of 13,622 PWH in one U.S. clinic had presumptive measles immunity. The most significant correlates of seronegativity were younger age, white race, and CD4 count <200 cells/µL. Increasing measles immunity in PWH is essential given increasing outbreaks.

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) secondary to measles in an adult with a loss of post-vaccination humoral immunity following rituximab.

Measles is an important re-emergent infectious disease globally. Vaccine immunity at the population level is key to the prevention of outbreaks, as unvaccinated or immunosuppressed adults are particularly vulnerable to severe infection. With the increasing use of immunomodulatory treatments for autoimmune and malignant conditions, the long-term effects of CD20-expressing cell-depleting therapies on the vaccine-induced humoral immunity to measles remain unclear. Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome with high mortality commonly triggered by infection and is p

Seroprotection against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, and rubella in children with diabetes.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) account for a major proportion of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the seroprotection status of common VPD in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study enrolled 38 children aged 3-18 years with T1DM and 40 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Demographic and clinical parameters were recorded. Venous blood samples were collected to estimate glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and antibody titers against hepatitis B and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Both groups had completed immunization for th

Mumps Encephalitis in a Measles Rubella (MR)-Vaccinated Child: A Rare but Preventable Complication.

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by the mumps virus, mainly affecting the salivary glands. It can cause serious complications, including mumps encephalitis. Despite widespread immunization practices, mumps outbreaks persist among both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, raising issues of concern regarding herd immunity. Mumps encephalitis, although rare, can produce serious complications warranting prompt diagnosis and management. Here, in this case report, we present a five-year-old girl who presented with fever, bilateral parotid swelling, and a single episode of abnormal m
