Differences in skin cancer-related beliefs and psychological distress among adults living in Florida who do and do not report a sunburn.

Objective: To determine a parsimonious set of skin cancer-related beliefs and distress predictors for having at least one sunburn over the past year. Sun exposure and sun protection behaviors were also assessed as predictors of sunburn. Methods: In this cross-sectional analysis of 1172 adults reporting at most modest sun sensitivity, data were collected between September 2015 and September 2018. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of sunburn based on skin cancer-related beliefs, distress, sun exposure, and sun protection behaviors. Results: Higher levels of melano

Sunburns, Tanning, and Social Media: A Descriptive Study Among Spanish University Students.

BACKGROUND: A positive attitude toward tanning has been associated with an increased risk of sunburn, which has been linked to an increased likelihood of developing skin cancer. The media have always played an important role in setting beauty standards in society. Nowadays, social media are widely used among younger generations, with the risk of promoting a preference for tanning. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted to examine sun exposure habits, sun protection practices, knowledge and attitudes related to sun exposure, frequency of sunburns, social media use, an

A curriculum-integrated sun safety intervention to improve adolescent skin health knowledge in an independent girls' secondary school.

Australia has one of the world's highest melanoma incidences among youth. Adolescents often under-prioritise sun protection due to sociocultural factors, for example, the perceived attractiveness of tanned skin and a sense of invulnerability. This study reports on a curriculum-integrated sun safety intervention implemented in a single independent girls' secondary school, a context that provides important insights but also limits generalisability to mixed-gender and other school settings. High school students (aged 13-15) participated in sun safety workshops integrated into their Personal Devel

Merkel cells attenuate autoantigen-specific T-cell-driven skin inflammation in mice associated with reduced neutrophil recruitment.

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus is a lymphocytic interface dermatitis condition that affects the skin and mucosa. Many patients experience photosensitivity and itch. Recent work has demonstrated that Merkel cells in the skin are important for itch responses in allokinesis and sunburn-induced itch. We asked whether Merkel cells were important for skin inflammation in the context of cutaneous lupus erythematosus, given the overlap of symptoms. To address this, we bred Merkel cell-deficient mice to our adoptive T-cell transfer cutaneous lupus erythematosus mouse model. Mice lacking half of their Me

Cationic nanotrap curbs UVB-induced cutaneous photodamage via exosomal cfNA capture.

Cell-free nucleic acids (cfNAs) carried by exosomes released from UVB-damaged skin cells act as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that amplify sterile inflammation and contribute to sunburn, photoaging, and skin tumorigenesis. We isolated exosomes and cfNAs from UVB-irradiated human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) and epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) and demonstrated that exosomes mediate the release and propagation of cfDNA, cfRNA, and cfmiRNA. These cfNAs activate endosomal Toll-like receptors (TLR3 and TLR9) and downstream NF-κB signaling in both reporter and recipient cell assays. To s

History of blistering sunburns and keratinocyte carcinoma risk in a nationwide U.S. cohort.

BACKGROUND: The large and growing burden of keratinocyte carcinoma (KC), including basal cell (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) suggests a need to identify high-risk individuals. We examined the association between KC risk and history of blistering sunburns in childhood and adulthood and investigated whether sun sensitivity modifies these associations. METHODS: Data were obtained from the large, nationwide U.S. Radiologic Technologists cohort, with baseline sunburn history and sun sensitivity traits collected via self-administered questionnaires. Participants were followed until diagnos

Cancer prevention in Germany: awareness, beliefs, and information-seeking behaviors in a population-based survey.

INTRODUCTION: At least 40% of cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes. However, despite clear recommendations, public awareness of modifiable cancer risk factors remains limited and misconceptions about cancer causes further impede prevention efforts. Understanding knowledge of preventable factors, myths, and information sources is essential for effective cancer prevention. METHODS: To address this, a total of 1,232 residents of Stuttgart, Germany (53.2% female; Mage  = 41.1; SD = 14.3) participated in the CLARO study (January-May 2025). A cross-sectional online survey assessed p

Safe cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose: A novel agent to attenuate UV radiation's inflammatory effects.

Sunlight's ultraviolet radiation is a major cause of both short-term (like sunburn) and long-term (like aging) skin damage. While traditional sunblocks use chemical filters (absorbing UV) or physical/mineral filters (reflecting UV) for prevention, researchers are exploring new topical agents with natural or synthetic ingredients for added protection. Building on our previous work with a safe, antibacterial biomass-derived material-cyanoacetyl microcrystalline cellulose (CAMCC)-this study investigated its ability to protect rat skin from UV induced inflammation. The results showed that the test

Shading Nets Modified Cluster-Zone Radiation, Bunch Sunburn Percentage and Berry Amino Acid Content in Cabernet Sauvignon: A Preliminary Study.

Shading nets are increasingly used in warm-climate vineyards to mitigate excessive cluster exposure. However, relatively few studies have evaluated their effects on fruit-zone microclimate and berry composition. This single-season field study evaluated the effects of conventional and photoselective shading nets in Cabernet Sauvignon on cluster-zone radiation, thermal conditions, bunch sunburn and powdery mildew percentage, berry maturity, and free amino acid content. Shading treatments significantly modified incident photosynthetically active radiation in the bunch zone, while air-temperature-

[Evaluation of the skin barrier repair function and anti-inflammatory activity of recombinant mussel mucin Mfp151].

Inflammation is a primary driver of skin ageing. Mussel mucin, a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory protein, suffers from inefficient extraction from its natural source. To overcome the yield limitation of natural sources and to verify the biological activity of the recombinant protein, this study employed synthetic biology techniques to efficiently produce and purify the recombinant mussel mucin Mfp151 and subsequently evaluated its anti-inflammatory and skin barrier repair functions. Using human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT), human foreskin fibroblasts (HFF-1), and human monocyte leu

Commensal Skin Microbiota Modulate Responses to Ultraviolet Radiation in Humans.

BACKGROUND: The skin and its commensal microbiota are regularly exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in sunlight. While UVR is a major environmental factor affecting human skin, the influence of skin microbiota on skin's UVR response remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: We have investigated the impact of the skin microbiota on UVR-induced inflammation (sunburn response) in healthy humans (Fitzpatrick skin type I-III, n = 10). METHODS: Ethanol-disinfected and non-disinfected upper back skin of 10 healthy volunteers were exposed to a geometric series of solar-simulated UVR (SSR, erythemally-we

Multifunctional irrigation mitigates heat stress, delays sugar accumulation and preserves berry composition in cv. Sangiovese (Vitis vinifera L.).

INTRODUCTION: Climate change increasingly threatens Mediterranean viticulture, as rising temperatures, increased radiation and reduced precipitation impose multiple stresses on grapevines, negatively affecting yield and grape composition. In red cultivars, these conditions often lead to a decoupling between technological and phenolic maturity, resulting in wines with higher alcohol content, reduced acidity and lower color intensity. In addition, sunburn damage further compromises both yield and berry quality. To address these challenges, a multifunctional irrigation system combining post-verai

All-small-molecule Hydrogels for Safe and Efficient Photoprotection.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancers. Conventional sunscreens typically combine organic UV filters and inorganic particles for photoprotection, yet concerns remain regarding skin penetration, systemic effects, and reactive oxygen species generation. Inspired by natural photoprotective mechanisms in plants, we develop a series of all-small-molecule sunscreen hydrogels based on natural polyphenols through a facile one-pot assembly process. The resulting hydrogels exhibit efficient UV shielding with high sun protection factors, strong bi

Health risks and benefits of UV radiation: Assessing exposure times related to vitamin D3 synthesis alongside the potential risk of sunburn in northern mid-latitudes.

In this research, the duration of exposure of unprotected skin required for the synthesis of 1000 IU of vitamin D3 (1000D3), along with the associated risk of erythema, was examined for Novi Sad (45.33° N, 19.85° E, 84 m asl) and Kopaonik (43.28° N, 20.80° E, 1710 m asl) (Serbia) in the period 2004-2020. A novel model for estimating hourly ultraviolet radiation doses from daily values was proposed. The focus was on data around local noon (10:00 and 15:00 h CET), skin types II and III, and four age groups (0-21, 22-40, 41-59, 60+). The analysis showed that from April to September, most individu
