Nano-Based Hydrogel for Cutaneous Sesamol Delivery in UVB-Induced Skin Injury.

Dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid, is used to mitigate UVB radiation-induced skin inflammation. Nevertheless, its continuous use has been linked to adverse effects. Sesamol, a compound with promising pharmacological properties, faces a challenge due to its rapid skin permeation, which limits its effectiveness when administered cutaneously. Consequently, polymeric nanocapsules have emerged as a technological solution to enhance the skin residence time and efficacy of sesamol in topical applications. This study details the preparation of sesamol-loaded ethylcellulose nanocapsule suspensions and ev

Chitosan Schiff-Base Hydrogel Sunscreen: A Multifunctional Hybrid Network with Antioxidant, Ultraviolet-Shielding, and Self-Healing Properties.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause erythema, sunburn, inflammation, and even skin cancer. Sunscreen is highly effective in protecting against UV radiation. Hydrogels, due to their similarity to the skin's extracellular matrix, flexibility, and high water content, have been widely used for sunscreen applications. However, traditional sunscreens may have limitations, including skin irritation, environmental impact, and formulation issues. This study introduces two innovative chitosan-based hydrogel sunscreens integrating 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (DHBA) and vanillin (VA)

Upregulation of Receptor Interacting Protein 1 Induced by UVB Contributes to Photodamage of the Skin Through NF-κB Pathway In Vivo and In Vitro.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) B can reach the epidermis and superficial dermis of the skin, inducing sunburn, inflammation, immunosuppression, cancer, and so on. Our former research found that receptor interacting protein (RIP) 1 could be upregulated in human dermal fibroblasts(HDFs) after UVB irradiation by using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry techniques. Besides, our further research found that RIP1 was involved in the UVB-induced production of ROS and MMPs in HDFs. So far, the mechanisms of skin photodamage

The Pretravel Consultation.

Patients who will be traveling internationally should be advised to schedule dedicated pretravel assessments with their primary care physicians. The pretravel consultation is a vital opportunity for physicians to review preventive and risk-reduction strategies with travelers. Critical components of the patient interview include travel itinerary, anticipated high-risk activity, and medical history. This information affects subsequent recommendations for immunizations, malaria chemoprophylaxis, personal protective measures, and risk-reduction measures. Physicians should review whether routine an

VvHY5 and VvBEE1 antagonistically control resveratrol biosynthesis to mitigate high light-induced damage in grapevine.

Excessive exposure to high light can lead to photoinhibition, which impairs photosynthetic efficiency and causes oxidative damage in plants, such as sunburn in grapevines. This study investigates the role of resveratrol (Res), a stilbenoid with antioxidant properties, in protecting plants from high light damage. We found that exposure to high light increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and induced photoinhibition in grapevine leaves. In response, Res biosynthesis was upregulated, along with an increase in stilbene synthase (VvSTS) expression. Application of exogenous Res allevia

Enhancing Photoprotection and Mitigating Ex Vivo Stratum Corneum Oxidative Stress: A Multifunctional Strategy Combining Rosmarinic Acid with UVB Filters.

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major contributor to skin injury, including sunburn, photoaging, and augmented risk of skin cancer, primarily through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induce oxidative stress. Rosmarinic acid (RA), a natural phenolic compound with antioxidant and several other biological properties, has shown promise in mitigating such damage when incorporated into sunscreens. We evaluated RA's possible interactions and potential to enhance the efficacy of three worldwide known UVB filters-ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), octocrylene (OCT), and

Diosmetin attenuates the ubiquitination of epidermal hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha by diminishing the formation of RhoBTB3/PHD2 complex in ultraviolet radiation-induced sunburn in mice.

BACKGROUND: The accumulation of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in keratinocytes is a pivotal mechanism underlying ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-induced skin damage and carcinogenesis. Disruption of redox homeostasis exacerbates ROS levels and instigates inflammation. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), essential for maintaining redox balance, is expressed in keratinocytes and plays a protective role in preserving the skin barrier. Stabilization of HIF-1α presents a potential therapeutic approach for UVR-induced sunburn. Our observations indicate that diosmetin inhibits the hydrox

Mutation burden of narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy (NB-UVB) in human skin: relevance to NB-UVB lifetime exposures and skin cancer surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is used as treatment for psoriasis and other skin diseases, but UVR can induce DNA mutations that may lead to skin cancer development. While skin cancers have been documented in patients treated with phototherapy, a limited number of epidemiological studies have examined the incidence of skin cancer in people receiving narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) treatment. Information on the mutagenicity of NB-UVB would help inform about the potential skin cancer risks of this treatment. OBJECTIVES: To determine the mutation burden in human skin resulting from a
