Genome-wide association study of grain hardness and novel Puroindoline alleles in bread wheat.

UNLABELLED: Grain hardness is a critical quality trait that determines the processing properties and commercial value of wheat, playing an essential role in both food security and the high-quality development of the wheat industry. In this study, we used an association panel of 233 wheat accessions to measure the grain hardness index (HI) across four different environments. Based on the re-sequencing data, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the genetic loci associated with wheat grain hardness. We detected two environmentally stable QTLs named QHa.hzau-5D and QHa.h

Comprehending the Potential of Topical Therapies for the Treatment of Onychomycosis.

INTRODUCTION: Onychomycosis is a frequently occurring fungal infection that affects the nails of the fingers and toes. Infection is caused by yeasts, dermatophytes, and nondermatophyte molds. Onychomycosis should be confirmed by mycology. Diagnosis can be made by various techniques, such as microscopy, fungal culture, potassium hydroxide, polymerase chain reaction, and histopathology. This review was undertaken to study the challenges associated with topical therapy of onychomycosis and techniques to overcome these challenges. METHODS: The search engines used for carrying out the literature r

The adaptive learning taxonomy for responsible large language model integration in higher education.

UNLABELLED: Large Language Models (LLMs) are being rapidly deployed in higher education, yet institutions lack integrated, theoretically grounded frameworks to guide responsible adoption. While meta-analytic evidence reports large positive effects on academic performance (g = 0.867; Wang and Fan 2025), emerging research reveals a "cognitive paradox": performance gains may coincide with diminished metacognitive accuracy and self-regulation-a gap no existing framework comprehensively addresses across adaptation design, data governance, pedagogical targeting, and learner agency simultaneously. Sternoclavicular joint involvement in psoriatic arthritis: a hidden indicator of disease severity.

OBJECTIVES: Sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) involvement in PsA is poorly characterized. We aimed to assess its prevalence and clinical associations in a longitudinal PsA cohort. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed prospectively collected data from the Gladman Krembil Psoriatic Arthritis Program. Patients with SCJ involvement (tender and/or swollen SCJ) were identified, and their demographic, clinical, laboratory and treatment details were retrieved. Univariable and multivariable generalized estimating equation models were used to assess associations with clinically swollen SCJ. Results are repo

Intraoperative Nail Matrix Assessment in Longitudinal Melanonychia.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal melanonychia (LM) may represent subungual melanoma (SUM), yet clinical differentiation from benign LM remains challenging. Intraoperative dermoscopy (IOD) improves diagnostic accuracy but requires specialized equipment and time. Intraoperative nail matrix examination (IONME), a direct visual inspection without magnification, may provide a simpler alternative. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of IONME compared with histopathology and nail plate dermoscopy. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 110 LM cases (16 SUM in situ, 94 benign LM, of which 88 were m

Relationship between recurrent colorectal cancer and EGFR inhibitor-induced dermatological side effects: a focus on paronychia.

This case describes a woman in her mid-40s with recurrent colorectal cancer who developed severe dermatologic toxicity during panitumumab-based therapy. Three months after treatment initiation, she developed a diffuse acneiform eruption, pronounced xerosis and painful periungual inflammation with exuberant granulation tissue consistent with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-inhibitor-induced paronychia. Multidisciplinary, guideline-concordant supportive care (including prompt topical measures and short-course systemic therapy) achieved symptom control and allowed continuation of anticanc

The Relative Effects of Monotherapies for Psoriatic Nails: A Network Meta-Analysis Study.

BACKGROUND: Various treatments exist for nail psoriasis (NP). We determined the relative efficacy of various monotherapies through Bayesian network meta-analyses (NMAs). METHODS: We systematically reviewed the literature to identify eligible studies which-within the patient, intervention, comparator, outcome (PICO) context-determined the impact of biologic monotherapies on NP in terms of two outcome measures, namely, (1) the 16 to 24-week mean change in the Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (NAPSI) (i.e., outcome 1), and (2) the proportion who attained a Physician Global Assessment of fingernails

A hybrid model for improved nail disease classification using vision transformers and stable diffusion.

Nail diseases, including various fungal infections, paronychia, and psoriasis, affect millions, and their treatment relies on visual inspection, which may result in inaccurate and delayed treatments. This study explores the use of synthetic nail disease data generated through stable diffusion models to increase the accuracy of the machine learning model. We aim to incorporate enhanced data transformation techniques by utilizing a few-shot learning technique with a small amount of data representation in the text-to-image stable diffusion model. This model renders synthetic data, which provides

Do Nails Tell a Pulmonary Tale? A Cross-Sectional Study on Psoriasis and Pulmonary Hypertension Risk.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease associated with cardiopulmonary comorbidities. Nail psoriasis, quantified by the Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (NAPSI), is a marker of severe disease. While pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is reported more frequently in psoriasis, the specific correlation between nail psoriasis severity and PAH remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation between NAPSI scores and the presence or severity of PAH in patients with psoriasis. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care centre inv

Glomus tumors of the left hallux and right thumb: a rare case report.

Glomus tumors commonly manifest as solitary, painful digital nodules. The synchronous occurrence in both a hallux and a thumb is exceedingly rare. We report a 35-year-old woman with subungual glomus tumors in her left hallux and right thumb, diagnosed through clinical evaluation and high-resolution ultrasonography. A novel nail-preserving technique, "tripartite zonal localization and excision," was employed. This involved transverse reflection of the nail plate for complete tumor excision under microscopic guidance. The procedure achieved complete pain resolution and satisfactory nail regrowth

Adult male patients with DKC1 mutations present early-onset pulmonary fibrosis and severe prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in telomere-related genes (TRGs) are the main cause of monogenic familial pulmonary fibrosis. Dyskerin, encoded by the X-localised gene DKC1, is involved in telomere maintenance. METHODS: This retrospective study aimed to further characterise the pulmonary phenotype of DKC1-deficient patients with pulmonary fibrosis identified between 2010 and 2025 in our laboratory. RESULTS: We reported eight, as yet undescribed, to our knowledge, probands affected by pulmonary fibrosis associated with X-linked DKC1 deficiency. The median age at interstitial lung disease (ILD) diagnosi

Proteomics reveals altered lipid biosynthesis and keratin hyperphosphorylation in pachyonychia congenita.

Pachyonychia congenita is a rare and painful skin disorder caused by dominant pathogenic variants in keratin genes (K6A/K6B/K6C/K16/K17), with no effective treatment. We developed a scalable, in-depth, and miniaturized mass spectrometry-based proteomics and phosphorylated proteomics analysis of full-thickness skin biopsies applied to 10 patients with pachyonychia congenita to elucidate pathogenic mechanisms and pinpoint therapeutic targets. We quantified 7200 protein groups on average from 2-mm snap-frozen skin samples, the most in-depth proteome coverage reported to date from a single-shot ma

Efficacy of Topical Beta-Blockers in Managing Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Inhibitor-Related Paronychia and Pyogenic Granuloma-Like Lesion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), are associated with paronychia and pyogenic granuloma-like lesions (PGLs) that significantly impair patients' quality of life. Topical beta-blockers emerge as a non-invasive and promising therapy for such adverse events. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of topical beta-blockers for EGFR inhibitor-induced paronychia and PGLs. METHOD: In accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, multiple databases were searched for relevant studies. The primary outcomes were overall response
