Measles is a highly transmissible viral disease. Following a decrease in vaccination rate between 2020 and 2023 due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a new surge of cases is observed worldwide. No direct antiviral is currently licensed against measles. Young children and immunocompromised individuals are the most at risk to develop complications. The best way to prevent transmission and complications is through vaccination. Public health measures are required to break transmission chains and protect the most fragile ones. The aim of this article is to review the epidemiology and the virological aspe

Measles is resurging in the United States, fueled by decreasing vaccination rates and rising vaccine hesitancy. Clinicians are confronted with a highly infectious vaccine-preventable disease that is unfamiliar to them because, as a result of routine childhood vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, measles was declared nonendemic in the United States in 2000 and many pediatricians have never seen a case. In this article, we provide an update on measles presentation, clinical course, and outcomes by reviewing the literature and sharing the expertise of senior pediatric infectious

BACKGROUND: Coinfections and reactivation of persistent or latent viral infections such as herpesviruses (HHV) and/or measles virus (MeV) have been reported among COVID-19 patients. However, there is limited information regarding cancer patients who experienced severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the interplay between SARS-CoV-2, HHV and MeV in cancer patients, aiming to provide insights into the pathophysiology of these infections and to enhance the patients' health outcomes.
METHODS: A prospective observational

Background/Objectives: Romania remains endemic for measles due to suboptimal vaccine coverage rates. During the last three epidemics, the highest incidence of measles was recorded in children younger than 1 year, who should have been partially protected by maternal antibodies. A nationwide cross-sectional seroprevalence study was conducted on persons of fertile age, to evaluate potential immunity gaps in the population. Methods: Between June and October 2020, 959 serum samples were collected from individuals aged 25-44 years (46.5% females) from all the geographic regions in Romania. Measles I

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on childhood routine immunization programs, resulting in increased measles mortalities and complications. In Zambia, the likelihood of measles-related deaths and complications in children was possibly increased because of high rates of unvaccinated children, late diagnosis, and poor case management, which could have been a consequence of exclusive focus on COVID-19 interventions. This study aimed at examining the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on measles mortality and its predictors among patients seen at health facilities in Zambia.

Measles is an acute, serious, highly contagious viral infection. Despite the existence of an effective and safe vaccine for more than half a century, measles outbreaks continue in the United States and cases are increasing worldwide. Further, there is a decreasing trend in national measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination coverage among kindergarteners. This article is intended to provide practitioners caring for children with an overview of the history of measles, its current national and international epidemiology, clinical picture, and important complications, as well as methods for preventi

Measles is one of the most contagious vaccine preventable diseases, causing severe complications and deaths globally. While vaccination with a measles-containing vaccine (MCV) has prevented millions of measles deaths, recent trends, especially from low- and middle-income countries, are discouraging. Measles cases have increased since 2021 as MCV coverage has decreased; and an estimated 107,500 measles deaths, mostly in children under-five years, occurred in 2023. Thus, a renewed focus on proven and innovative strategies to control measles is needed. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommen

People with HIV (PWH) have increased risk of complications from measles. Only 11.2% of 13,622 PWH in one U.S. clinic had presumptive measles immunity. The most significant correlates of seronegativity were younger age, white race, and CD4 count <200 cells/µL. Increasing measles immunity in PWH is essential given increasing outbreaks.

Measles is an important re-emergent infectious disease globally. Vaccine immunity at the population level is key to the prevention of outbreaks, as unvaccinated or immunosuppressed adults are particularly vulnerable to severe infection. With the increasing use of immunomodulatory treatments for autoimmune and malignant conditions, the long-term effects of CD20-expressing cell-depleting therapies on the vaccine-induced humoral immunity to measles remain unclear. Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a hyperinflammatory syndrome with high mortality commonly triggered by infection and is p

Measles remains a major public health issue, particularly among paediatric populations who are unvaccinated or lack of maternal antibody transfer. Although the majority of cases manifest with moderate clinical forms, certain patient categories are at risk for severe disease progression. This study aims to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of paediatric measles cases hospitalized in the Paediatric Departments of the "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș" National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Bucharest, Romania during two distinct epidemic waves: 2017-2019 and 2023-2024. The recent international resurgence of measles has led to significant public health concerns and poses significant risks to immunocompromised patients, including those who have undergone solid organ transplantation (SOT). SOT recipients may present atypically and are at an increased risk of severe complications of measles infection, underscoring the importance of preventative measures. This review summarizes contemporary data regarding measles transmission, the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of SOT recipients, as well as strategies for measles prevention, infection control con

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) account for a major proportion of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. This study aimed to evaluate the seroprotection status of common VPD in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The study enrolled 38 children aged 3-18 years with T1DM and 40 age-and sex-matched healthy controls. Demographic and clinical parameters were recorded. Venous blood samples were collected to estimate glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and antibody titers against hepatitis B and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Both groups had completed immunization for th

BACKGROUND: T Measles is a viral, highly contagious disease from the group of rash fevers, which mainly affects children. Persons suffering from measles are considered contagious four days before and four days during the period of the appearance of measles, which favors its faster spread. Clinical observation and laboratory diagnostics are essential for monitoring the course of the disease in order to prevent complications.
OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to analyze the significance and usefulness of laboratory tests on admission to hospital in pediatric patients with measles.

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by the mumps virus, mainly affecting the salivary glands. It can cause serious complications, including mumps encephalitis. Despite widespread immunization practices, mumps outbreaks persist among both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, raising issues of concern regarding herd immunity. Mumps encephalitis, although rare, can produce serious complications warranting prompt diagnosis and management. Here, in this case report, we present a five-year-old girl who presented with fever, bilateral parotid swelling, and a single episode of abnormal m

BACKGROUND: Canada eliminated measles in 1998, but the risk of outbreaks remains due to sub-optimal vaccine coverage and imported cases. To address limitations of vaccine coverage data, we measured measles seroprevalence among a convenience sample of individuals serologically tested in Ontario, Canada.
METHODS: We linked measles IgG serology data from 349,451 individuals tested during 2014-2016 to health administrative databases and used a cross-sectional design to measure measles IgG seroprevalence. We estimated seroprevalence overall and by sociodemographic factors.
