Hormonal Contraceptives: Part I- Formulations and Physiological Effects on the Skin.

The skin synthesizes hormones and expresses hormone receptors. Androgens are steroid hormones that interact with the skin and play a role in the development of acne, hirsutism, and hair loss. Estrogens and progestogens are steroid hormones found in the skin that may affect sebum production and hair growth by lowering androgen levels, as well as incompletely understood interactions with the skin's structures. Thus, oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) containing estrogen and progestogen have potential benefits in treating conditions commonly seen by dermatologists. In part 1 of this continuing medic

Hormonal Contraceptives: Part II- Use and Relevance in Clinical Dermatology.

Combined oral contraceptives (COC) decrease androgen levels by inhibiting androgen production and increasing sex hormone binding globulin. COC can therefore be used in the treatment of androgen-mediated dermatologic conditions. Hormonal contraceptives may also contribute to some dermatologic diseases through interactions with estrogen and/or progesterone receptors. In part two of this continuing medical education article, we discuss evidence regarding the mechanism and efficacy of hormonal contraceptives as therapeutics for acne, hirsutism, and hair loss, and review potential dermatologic SE o

TASP1-Related Suleiman-El-Hattab Syndrome: The First Genetically Confirmed Case in Iran Accompanied by a Comprehensive Literature Review.

Suleiman–El-Hattab syndrome (SULEHS; OMIM #618674) is an ultra-rare autosomal recessive multisystem neurodevelopmental disorder caused by biallelic loss-of-function variants in TASP1, with a characteristic combination of global developmental delay/intellectual disability, distinctive craniofacial dysmorphism, recurrent infections, congenital anomalies, and a typically cheerful affect. Because fewer than ten molecularly confirmed individuals have been reported, the phenotypic spectrum and neuroradiologic variability remain incompletely defined. We describe the first genetically confirmed Irania

Effects of acupuncture on improving hormonal and metabolic biochemical characteristics in polycystic ovary syndrome.

We investigated the effects of electroacupuncture on hormonal and metabolic characteristics in women with obesity-related polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In this randomized controlled study, 120 patients were assigned to either an electroacupuncture group or a sham acupuncture group (60 per group) and treated three times weekly for 16 weeks. Hormonal profiles, metabolic parameters, inflammatory markers, ovarian morphology, and clinical outcomes were evaluated before and after intervention. Compared with sham treatment, electroacupuncture significantly reduced luteinizing hormone, LH/FSH rati

Development and validation of an LC-MS/MS assay for serum 5α-androstane-3α, 17β-diol 17-glucuronide with enhanced interference resolution.

5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol 17-glucuronide (3α-diol G) is a testosterone metabolite and an important biomarker of hormonal dysregulation, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and virilizing syndromes in women such as idiopathic hirsutism. While immunoassay kits are commonly used for its quantification in clinical laboratories, these methods are prone to interference due to the structural similarity among steroidal compounds. In this study, we developed and validated a robust LC-MS/MS method for the quantification of 3α-diol G in human serum. Extraction was performed using a μelution SPE ap

Severe hyperandrogenism and mild autonomous cortisol secretion from a functional lipid-poor adrenal cortical adenoma.

A 44-year-old woman presented with progressive hirsutism, deepening of voice, irregular menses, and left flank discomfort. Laboratory evaluation revealed markedly elevated serum testosterone and androstenedione levels, along with unsuppressed cortisol following an overnight 1 mg dexamethasone test. Notably, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels remained within normal limits. Imaging identified a 4.2-cm heterogeneously enhancing left adrenal mass with a precontrast attenuation of 15 Hounsfield units, consistent with a lipid-poor lesion. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomograp

Biographical Discovery, Affirmation, and Disruption: Trans and Nonbinary Peoples' Experiences Negotiating Gender and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine irregularity in people who are assigned-female-at-birth and are of reproductive age. PCOS causes infertility, irregular periods and hirsutism. Cis women with PCOS describe these symptoms as 'masculinising,' which makes them feel inauthentic as women. However, trans and nonbinary people with PCOS may desire a more masculine appearance, but little attention has been given to how these people may experience PCOS. Using Apify, we collected 450 posts from three popular PCOS Reddit communities. We examined titles, posts, and comments for

Models of care on the management of women with polycystic ovary syndrome: A multicentre study.

PURPOSE: International recommendations on the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) advocate comprehensive assessment, risk stratification, and patient-centred education at first presentation; however, implementation within real-world Models of Care (MoCs) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to characterise PCOS MoCs, assess alignment with international recommendations, and examine variability in investigations at first specialist consultation. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre observational mixed-methods evaluation across eight secondary-care centres in five countries. Quali

Dexamethasone therapy in adolescents with inadequately controlled congenital adrenal hyperplasia: effects on hormonal Suppression, Puberty, and gonadal outcomes.

PURPOSE: Puberty poses challenges for the management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to changes in the endocrine milieu and non-compliance with treatment. Uncontrolled hyperandrogenemia is a significant problem, especially for CAH patients in this age group. Along with the attainment of final height, a therapeutic window emerges for employing more potent glucocorticoids (GCs) to improve disease management in the pediatric age group. Dexamethasone (Dex) is a long-acting and more potent GC, and offers a convenient dosing schedule for patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the
