Lactobacillus-Based Microbiome Therapy for Acne Vulgaris: A GRADE Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is one of the most prevalent disorders affecting 9%-10% of the global population, representing as papules, pustules, and comedones, with a pathogenesis involving increased sebum production, C. acnes colonization, and inflammation. Conventional treatments like retinoids and antibiotics often cause side effects, thus diverting attention toward probiotics as an alternative therapy. Lactobacillus probiotics, having their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, are useful in managing acne by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress with proved

Cellulose Acetate Fibers With Infiltrated ZnO Nanocrystals: Activation of Antibacterial Properties Against Acne vulgaris by Oxygen Plasma Treatment.

In this work, we developed biodegradable cellulose acetate (CA) fibers infiltrated with ZnO nanocrystals for the Acne vulgaris (AV) treatment. The antibacterial effect (through Zn2+ release) was activated upon oxygen plasma treatment. CA fibers (fiber diameter ≈ 2 µm) were produced via centrifugal spinning, followed by ZnO infiltration (up to 8 wt% of Zn content) using Vapor Phase Infiltration (VPI) with varying deposition cycles. As CA fibers are naturally hydrophobic, oxygen plasma treatment was applied to turn them hydrophilic and to improve skin wetting. The combination of these steps is p

The Evolving Microbial Paradigm in Acne.

This review discusses the microbiology of acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous unit that affects most adolescents and can persist into adulthood. The current standard of care consists largely of antibacterial interventions, based on the traditional view of Cutibacterium acnes as a pathogen. Alternative treatments are suggested by the "comedo switch" hypothesis, which attributes acne to aberrant differentiation of LRIG1+ sebaceous progenitor cells. While there is strong evidence to support this idea, it does not explain the efficacy of antibacterial interventions

The Inflammatory Basis of Acne Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a common inflammatory and genetically influenced skin disease. Previous genome-wide association studies and epigenome-wide association studies have demonstrated that genetic factors constitute an important basis for acne susceptibility, while recurrent and persistent local inflammatory responses contribute to its chronic and relapsing nature. SUMMARY: Infection with Cutibacterium acnes, activation of Toll-like receptors and the NLRP3 inflammasome, and dysregulation of the IL-6/STAT3 and Notch signaling pathways induce the release of inflammatory mediators and immune activa

Expert Consensus on the Rational Approach to Isotretinoin Usage for Effective Management of Acne: ERAISE ACNE Recommendations.

Oral isotretinoin remains the gold standard for severe acne, with expanding use in broader subtypes. However, clinical practice varies across regions in terms of dosing, monitoring, and adjunctive care. A consensus was developed by 20 dermatology experts through a modified Delphi process and literature review (2000-2024) to provide practical recommendations. High consensus supported first-line isotretinoin among adults for severe acne variants (conglobata, nodulocystic, and papulopustular), acne with scarring or psychological distress, and moderate acne featuring frequent relapse, significant
