RATIONALE: A natural malignant transformation of intracranial epidermoid cysts (IECs) into squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) is very rare, and the mechanism remains unclear. Due to its rarity, there is currently no consensus on the management of primary intracranial SCC (PISCC) at present.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old woman was with an IEC in the right cerebellopontine angle region in our report. Her neurological symptom deteriorated rapidly in the 1 month before the admission.
DIAGNOSES: The preoperative diagnosis was IEC. Postoperative pathological examination confirmed the presence of SC

The surgical indications and optimal approach for retrorectal tumors remain unclear due to their rarity and the anatomical complexity of the presacral space. We report the case of a 48-year-old man in whom a retrorectal mass was incidentally detected on abdominal and pelvic computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cystic lesion measuring 32 × 12 × 20 mm, with low signal intensity on T1-weighted and high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. Given the difficulty of establishing a definitive diagnosis and the potential risk of infection or tumor seeding with biopsy, prima

Intrascrotal extratesticular epidermoid cysts are rare benign lesions that typically present as slow-growing, painless masses. Accurate and early diagnosis is crucial to differentiate them from malignant lesions and guide appropriate management. In this case, we present the multimodal radiological findings of these cysts, including gray-scale ultrasonography (US), color Doppler US, shear wave elastography (SWE), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts are usually single, benign, keratin-filled cysts which occur mainly on the face and upper trunk of young adults. Surgical resection is the main treatment, which inevitably leaves scars and may recur. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been reported as a non-invasive and promising treatment for various skin diseases with cosmetic benefits.
METHODS: 14 patients with single epidermoid cyst located on the face received ALA-PDT treatment. After the plum-blossom needle pretreatment, cyst was incubated with 5 % ALA cream for 30 min and then irradiated with 633 nm LED red lig

Cerebellopontine angle epidermoids (CPAE) are known to present irritative symptoms due to the adjacent tumour or compressive symptoms due to direct contact and compression by the tumour. Presentation due to contralateral structural involvement has not yet been highlighted in these cases. Our aims & objectives are to evaluate patients of CPAE presenting with contralateral symptoms and to compare this subset with patients presenting with ipsilateral symptoms. This study is a retrospective analysis of patients who underwent surgery over the last 22 years for CPAE. Several parameters were taken in

Subungual epidermoid inclusions (SEI) are benign cystic lesions of the nail bed. To our knowledge, there has been only one case series describing SEI. We report eight cases of SEI. The patients had a median age of 72 years (range 3-84) with a female: male ratio of 1.6. Five occurred in toenails and three in fingernails. Histologically, SEI is characterized by bulbous proliferation of rete ridges and unilocular cysts lined by thin squamous epithelium with hypogranulosis, filled with orthokeratin. The connection to the nail bed epithelium may be disrupted and calcified. SEI are tumors that shoul

Epidermal inclusion cysts are benign lesions that arises from the proliferation and entrapment of epidermal elements within the dermis, characterized by a lining of stratified squamous epithelium and an accumulation of keratin debris. While epidermal inclusion cysts are commonly located in areas such as the scalp and neck, their occurrence in the breast is rare. In some instances, the cyst can arise in atypical locations, including the nipple and parenchyma. This report presents a 40-year-old female patient who presented with a progressively enlarging lump in the right breast, initially diagnos

Keratosytoma is a rare, benign salivary gland tumor designated as a new entity by Nagao et al. in 2002. Recently, the discovery of RUNX2 gene rearrangement as a characteristic genetic alteration has established its classification as a distinct neoplasm, solidifying the inclusion of keratocystoma in the 5th edition of the WHO classification of Head and Neck Tumors. Clinically, keratocystoma occurs across a broad age range but is most prevalent among younger individuals, with no significant sex predilection. It typically presents as a slow-growing parotid mass. Histologically, the tumor is chara

Primary splenic epidermoid cysts are extremely rare and typically discovered incidentally. The symptoms are variable, from an asymptomatic abdominal mass to severe abdominal pain. It is difficult to diagnose a primary splenic epidermoid cyst using imaging tests preoperatively, as it can appear similar to other cyst types. We report a 23-year-old woman who presented with left-sided abdominal pain. An advanced computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an 18 × 15 × 12 cm complicated splenic cyst, which was ultimately treated with a laparoscopic splenectomy, and the patient achieved a full recovery.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts are usually found in the head, neck, and trunk, and they are very rare to be found in the popliteal fossa. Baker's cyst is the most common cause of popliteal fossa swelling. To our knowledge, this is the seventh reported case of an epidermal inclusion cyst in the knee area.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old male presented with popliteal swelling that had been present since 2016. It was not associated with pain or restriction of movement. On examination, the swelling was firm, well-capsulated, freely mobile, and not fixed to the underlying structure. There was no ten

A 69-year-old man presented to eye casualty for increasing binocular diplopia and a superonasal orbital mass. In 2006, he had an accidental injury to the right eye with a pool cue under the right upper lid. Facial X-ray showed no fractures, and the patient was discharged. Five years later, he developed a cystic lesion at the site of the injury which was excised. In 2023, the mass reappeared causing double vision but was initially ignored. On examination, there was a solid lesion under the right upper lid causing hypoglobus and restriction to elevation. Intraoperatively, the mass was firmly att

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the intra-observer agreement of ultrasound elastography according to region-of-interest (ROI) size in surgically confirmed epidermal cysts.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 201 surgically confirmed epidermal cysts that underwent two consecutive strain elastography and shear wave elastography (SWE) examinations. Circular ROIs were drawn in the lesion and adjacent fat to obtain the strain ratio, shear wave (SW) velocity, and SW elasticity. Lesions were stratified by ROI diameter into <2 mm (group 1) and ≥2 mm (group 2). For each parameter, the abs

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts of the pineal region with posterior third ventricular extension are exceptionally rare, especially in the pediatric population. Despite their benign histology, their deep location near critical neurovascular structures poses considerable surgical challenges. We present the first reported pediatric case of a pineal epidermoid cyst extending into the posterior third ventricle successfully managed through a purely endoscopic transventricular approach, and analyze the literature.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are congenital benign tumors; however, there is a long-term risk of recurrence if the tumor capsule is left behind perioperatively. Additionally, in cerebellopontine angle surgery, in which cranial nerves and blood vessels are densely concentrated, cranial nerve functions must be preserved besides radical removal of the tumor capsule. Particularly, the optimal surgical field should be obtained under direct visualization to avoid cranial nerve damage due to manipulation over cranial nerves and leaving the tumor behind in the blind spot of the surgical field. Testicular epidermoid cysts (TECs) are rare benign intratesticular lesions that can clinically and radiologically mimic malignant germ cell tumors. We report two cases of adolescent males presenting with painless testicular nodules. Imaging findings-characteristic concentric echogenic rings, absence of vascularity, and normal tumor markers-suggested TECs. In both cases, intraoperative frozen section confirmed the diagnosis, revealing cystic lesions lined by squamous epithelium and filled with lamellar keratin, allowing for testis-sparing surgery. These cases highlight the importance of combini

BACKGROUND: To address soft tissue volume deficiencies following surgery or injury, plastic surgeons implant de-epithelialized flaps subcutaneously. During this procedure, residual epidermal components and skin appendages may inadvertently be implanted, potentially leading to postoperative complications. However, such occurrences are rare in clinical practice. To date, no studies have examined the long-term changes in subcutaneously transposed skin flaps.
METHODS: De-epithelialized and non-de-epithelialized flaps were implanted subcutaneously in rat models. Pathological analyses, Western blot

This article presents the rare occurrence of a trichilemmal cyst in the orbit of a 69-year-old female patient, who presented with a headache of acute onset and relative unilateral proptosis of the left eye. CT scan showed a cystic, well-demarcated, round hypodense lesion, with spotted calcification. Surgery was performed for the extraction and analysis of the lesion, which showed typical histological findings of a trichilemmal tumor. This case represents the only one reported in the literature, to the best of the authors' knowledge. An atypical localization for this kind of tumor that usually

Intradiploic epidermoid cysts (IECs) are rare cystic calvarial lesions. Due to their rarity, there is a clinical need to aggregate the collective experience reported in the literature to characterize typical clinical features, clinical predictors of patient outcomes, and management strategies used for this entity. Following PRI SMA guidelines, 127 patients from 94 studies (77 case reports, 17 case series) were included with individual patient data. Clinical data on demographics, clinical presentation, imaging features, management approaches, and outcomes were characterized, and predictors of o
