Efficacy of spironolactone in treating hidradenitis suppurativa in women of childbearing age: a single-center retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disease characterized by recurrent nodules that affect areas with a high density of apocrine sweat glands, such as the axillae and groin. Androgens are implicated in the pathophysiology of HS. Therefore, spironolactone, an antiandrogen therapy, is recommended. However, data on its use in women of childbearing age are limited, especially since its antiandrogenic effects may affect menstruation, fertility, and pubertal development. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of spironolactone in the treatment of hidradenitis suppura

Comparison of Microwave-Based Therapy and Negative-Pressure Suction-Curettage for Axillary Hyperhidrosis and Bromhidrosis: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Axillary hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis are common clinical diseases, affecting the patients' work and life. Negative-pressure suction-curettage is the most popular treatment now, but challenged by a new microwave-based therapy (MiraDry). We intend to compare the safety and efficiency of the 2 treatments. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 39 female patients with both primary hyperhidrosis and bromhidrosis was conducted. Seventeen patients were treated with MiraDry, and 22 underwent negative-pressure suction-curettage. The postoperative follow-up program included sweat and odor

Evaluation of Axillary Skin Thickness by High-Frequency Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency ultrasound has been utilized in dermatology to visualize superficial cutaneous structures. Axillae are often target of treatments for hair removal, for spot clearing, and for skin conditions such as hyperhidrosis, bromhidrosis, and hidradenitis. Detailed knowledge of armpit thickness can help improve existing therapies and increase their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: To describe the mean skin thickness of axillae, by further investigating possible correlations with variations in age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Axillae were divided into 5 qua

A Rare Case of Axillary Extramammary Paget's Disease with an Underlying Adenocarcinoma.

Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is an uncommon cutaneous neoplasm almost exclusively located in the vulvar, perianal, and male genitalia regions. Evaluation and management are complicated given the average delay in diagnosis is two years and approximately 30% of cases are associated with underlying malignancies. The axilla is a unique location for EMPD. We report a rare case of a 78-year-old male with axillary EMPD associated with an underlying adenocarcinoma. A 1-cm tender and pruritic erythematous plaque with surrounding erythema appeared in the patient's axilla. An irritated seborrheic

Identification of a higher C-S lyase activity of Staphylococcus hominis in volunteers with unpleasant axillary odour.

OBJECTIVE: Excessive and unpleasant odours that emanate from the skin can induce bromhidrosis and substantially impair a person's quality of life. Enzymatic pathways generating unpleasant odours are well detailed, and among them, the C-S lyase is one of the enzymes involved in the conversion of non-volatile precursors into thiol-type malodorous volatile molecules such as 3M3SH. This study aimed to investigate the variation of axillary odour intensity correlated with Staphylococcus (S.) hominis C-S lyase activity within a group of volunteers after a physical activity. METHODS: First, a group o

A review of cutaneous apocrine carcinoma: epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options.

Cutaneous apocrine carcinoma is a rare skin cancer arising from apocrine sweat glands. Disease-specific treatments are required for cutaneous adnexal carcinomas due to their heterogeneous treatment responsiveness. This review reports on the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathological features, surgical management, and use of systemic therapies for cutaneous apocrine carcinoma. Diagnosing cutaneous apocrine carcinoma requires presenting with distinctive pathological features and excluding metastatic adenocarcinomas, particularly breast cancer. Clinical findings are essential to exclude metastatic ade

Identifying the key role of mitochondrial respiration and lipid metabolism in regulating axillary osmidrosis through proteomics analysis.

Axillary osmidrosis (AO) affects a large number of young people in Asia, resulting from a combination of body and bacterial metabolism. This study aimed to explore the pathogenesis of AO through proteomics. Apocrine gland tissues from 3 mild and 3 severe AO patients were analyzed using 4D label-free proteomics, followed by bioinformatics analysis. The RNA and protein levels of the predicted key regulators were further validated by qPCR and immunohistochemistry in additional AO tissues. A total of 5066 proteins were identified, of which 323 were significantly upregulated and 412 were downregula

DNA methylation patterns of circadian and ultradian genes are altered in the peripheral blood of patients with hidradenitis suppurativa.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects hair follicles in areas with apocrine sweat glands, such as the underarms, groin, and buttocks. The pathogenesis of HS is not fully understood, but considering the key role played by the biological clock in the control of immune/inflammatory processes the derangement of circadian and ultradian pathways could be hypothesized. METHODS: We analyzed genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in peripheral blood from 24 HS cases and 24 controls using the Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip array (Illumina),

Using Neuromodulators for Salivary, Eccrine, and Apocrine Gland Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sialorrhea, hyperhidrosis, bromhidrosis, and chromhidrosis are common glandular disorders that substantially impact patients' health and quality of life. Botulinum toxin can safely and temporarily decrease gland secretions by targeting the parasympathetic cholinergic neurons, resulting in diminished saliva and sweat production. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to describe the applications of neuromodulators for the treatment of salivary, eccrine, and apocrine glands. METHODS: PubMed was searched from inception to February 1, 2024 using search terms "neurotoxin," "botul

Chromhidrosis Linked to Personal Care Products.

Eccrine chromhidrosis (CH) is a rare condition characterized by the excretion of colored sweat from eccrine glands. This case report contributes to the medical literature by highlighting two instances of eccrine CH linked to over-the-counter personal care products, an association not previously documented. These products contained FD&C Blue No. 1, D&C Red No. 33, and Ext. D&C Violet No. 2, which are known colorants in various consumer items. These cases underscore the potential for personal care products containing colored dyes to cause eccrine CH. The medical community and consumers must be v

Pink Eccrine Chromhidrosis Induced by Excessive Consumption of an Energy Drink.

Eccrine chromhidrosis is a rare condition characterised by the abnormal colouration of eccrine sweat, which may be triggered by endogenous or exogenous factors. We report the case of a 19-year-old male who was referred to us for persistent pink sweating for three months. Clinical examination and further investigations did not provide a clear diagnosis or arguments in favour of pseudochromhidrosis or apocrine chromhidrosis. Investigation of eating habits revealed an excessive consumption of a pink energy drink. The sweat normalised when consumption ceased, and chromhidrosis relapsed after the r

Differential antigen expression between human apocrine sweat glands and eccrine sweat glands.

Bromhidrosis has a great negative impact on personal occupation and social psychology. It is not yet clear whether bromhidrosis is caused by apocrine sweat glands or the co-action of apocrine sweat glands and eccrine sweat glands. To distinguish between apocrine sweat glands and eccrine sweat glands, specific antigen markers for apocrine sweat glands and eccrine sweat glands must be found first. In the study, we detected the expression of K7, K18, K19, Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter 1 (NKCC1), carbonic anhydrase II (CAII), Forkhead transcription factor a1 (Foxa1), homeobox transcription factor engr
