The effect of red palm oil (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) on skin hydration in streptozotocin-induced diabetic white rat models.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is frequently associated with cutaneous complications, including xerosis cutis, due to impaired skin barrier function. Red palm oil (RPO; Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and barrier-repair properties that may improve skin hydration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of topical RPO on skin hydration in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rat models. Thirty-two male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n=8 each): normal control (G1), untreated diabetic (G2), diabetic tre

Multi-omics analysis of transcriptomics and proteomics to provide mechanistic insights into the effects of camellia oil in alleviating xerosis cutis.

Camellia oil, renowned for its high nutritional and cosmetic values, is frequently employed to ameliorate dermatological conditions, including xerosis cutis (XC). However, there remains a paucity of systematic research elucidating its efficacy and underlying mechanisms in the management of XC. This study aimed to identify the chemical constituents of Camellia oil, evaluate its therapeutic effects in an acetone-ether-water (AEW)-induced mouse model, and discover the underlying mechanisms of its action. The chemical composition was characterized analytically, and in vivo experiments were conduct

Xerosis cutis and wounded skin in modern art: Two works by Alberto Burri.

The human skin has been a subject of medicine and art. The interest in the interaction of skin and the inner body had increased after the establishment of anatomy as a science long before dermatology was acknowledged as a medical discipline. In painting the body surface, the Inkarnat (flesh tone) represents a mixture of the superficial epidermis and dermis, plus the deeper musculature and vasculature, each contributing to the skin color. In the fine arts of the Renaissance, skin is understood as primarily a layer of material. The human skin can express feelings, emotions, and various states of

Restoring Skin Hydration and Barrier Function: Mechanistic Insights Into Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis.

Healthy skin is structured to maintain water balance by maximizing water retention and minimizing evaporative loss. The water-holding and barrier functions of the skin can be impaired by several factors that lead to xerosis cutis (dry skin); however, they can also be restored by basic emollients that act through the physicochemical properties of their constituents. This article aims to give a narrative review of the physiology of normal skin hydration, the key pathophysiological mechanisms implicated in dry skin, and the functional effects of basic emollients for managing xerosis cutis. Skin h

Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis in Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common and burdensome symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the physicochemical properties of their nonactive constituents (e.g., glycerol, urea, lactic acid, liquid paraffin, petrolatum) and represent the mainstay of basic therapy for xerosis cutis associated with AD. Newer "emollients plus" containing active ingredients may expand the treatment options available to patients with AD; however, we believe that basic emollients remain an important strategy for the long-term management of xerosis cut

Optimization of Basic Emollient Therapy for the Management of Xerosis Cutis.

Topical emollients are the mainstay of basic therapy for managing xerosis cutis (dry skin). In general, most emollient formulations are safe and effective for xerosis cutis and diseases associated with dry skin; however, several other factors can vary widely between products, influence patient adherence, and ultimately affect treatment success. This article reviews key practical and clinical considerations when prescribing emollients for xerosis cutis and discusses strategies to optimize treatment and clinical outcomes for these patients. Although the optimal quantity and frequency of emollien
