BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a widely distributed infectious agent, which causes a variety of illnesses including erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) especially in children, arthritis, aplastic crisis, and hydrops fetalis. B19 can be transmitted from asymptomatic blood donors to recipients of their blood components. Fifth disease has been reported in patients receiving red blood cells, platelets, solvent/detergent-treated plasma, and clotting factor concentrates.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A new B19-specific Light Cycler (LC) reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PC

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a major causative agent in a syndrome of reproductive failure in swine. In validation (viral clearance) studies, PPV is a model of non-enveloped viruses and is widely used instead of human parvovirus B19, which causes a variety of illnesses including erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) in children and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. To improve the sensitivity of current PCR-based assays for detection of PPV and to standardize the quantification of PPV, we have developed a lightcycler (LC) nested-PCR (nPCR) assay and constructed a PPV DNA standard evaluated in th

Parvovirus B19 is a common source of infection with a seroprevalence of 60-70 per cent in the adult population. The most common manifestation is erythema infectiosum ("fifth disease"), with exanthem, fever and upper airway symptoms in children. The infection can give rise to a multifaceted clinical picture and is probably underdiagnosed, particularly in risk groups (individuals with haemolytic anaemia or immunosuppression, and fetuses). Serological diagnosis can now be complemented with the demonstration of viral DNA using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test in various body fluids, or tis

Human parvovirus B19 is the cause of several distinct clinical syndromes. The most common is erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a febrile exanthem occurring primarily in children. Recent studies have shown that parvovirus B19 can cause acute arthritis and occasionally a chronic arthropathy, both in children and adults. Parvovirus B19 DNA has been detected in studies in the synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but other studies have varied in their findings. Recent studies also indicate a possible connective tissue disease-like syndrome with parvoviral infections. The commo

QUESTION: One of my patients is currently 14 weeks pregnant. She is a teacher in grade 1, and there is an epidemic of Fifth disease in the school where she teaches. Can this disease affect her pregnancy and how should I care for her?
ANSWER: Erythema infectiosum (Fifth disease) is usually a benign disease for children and mothers, but might have serious consequences for a fetus due to hemolytic anemia, although the risk is very low. You should evaluate the mother's immune status. If she is already immune (IgG positive), the risks are nil. If she is not immune (although the risk of the fetus's

Due to the preparative regimen necessary, bone marrow transplantation (BMT) consistently results in severe immunodeficiency, often associated with anaemia, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. Parvovirus B19 replicates in red blood cell precursors in the bone marrow and causes erythema infectiosum ('fifth disease'), anaemia, arthritis and foetal death. We assessed the significance of B19 infections as a cause of post-BMT complications. Over 900 serial serum samples from 201 allogeneic bone marrow recipients were studied by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and by modern serodiagnostic methods. Durin

Exanthem is defined as multiple, inflammatory skin alteration with a hematogenic, lymphogenic or neurogenic origin. Typically, so called exanthematic children's diseases are measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and in the past small pox. The pathogenesis of the viral-caused diseases primarily occurs in the vascular connective tissue. The cytopathogenetic effects result in inflammatory tissue reactions with activation of defence mechanism and producing of immune complexes. First symptoms are hyperemia, edema and inflammatory infiltrates with itchy swellings.

Parvovirus B19 is usually associated with an acute, self-limited disease in children. In patients with a congenital hemolytic anemia, infection with this virus can cause an aplastic crisis. We describe such a crisis in an adult with asymptomatic hereditary spherocytosis. The association between acute red blood cell aplasia and infection with parvovirus B19 is well described in patients with hereditary hemolytic anemia, particularly sickle cell anemia. This association has also been described, although less frequently, in patients with other inherited hemolytic diseases, such as hereditary sphe

Human parvovirus B19 is the aetiological agent of the common childhood disease erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). The infection is usually benign and self-limiting, but in adults cases of severe arthritis which may persist for years have been reported. Neutralizing antibodies directed against the structural proteins are usually produced shortly after the infection. The immune response against the third major protein, the non-structural protein NS-1, of parvovirus B19 has not been characterized so far. We cloned and expressed the full-length NS-1 protein and fragments thereof in Escherichia

Parvovirus B19 is a small, heat-stable, single-strained DNA virus (5.5 kb), with 23 nm icosahedral capsid discovered in 1975. Since its discovery, the virus has been shown to be a causative agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). Under specific circumstances it can cause transient aplastic crisis, chronic anemia, arthritis and fetal death. Laboratory diagnosis of recent or past B19 infection usually relies on the demonstration of virus-specific IgM or IgG antibodies in patient's serum. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Parvovirus B19 infection among 87 pregnant pat

Human parvovirus B19 causes erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and aplastic crisis. In pregnancy, B19 may be transmitted on to the fetus resulting in hydrops fetalis. B19 is sometimes associated with thrombocytopenia and vasculitis. In immunocompromised patients, B19 may persist causing chronic infection. Several methods for detecting B19 virus or specific antibodies are now available. B19 infection does not usually require therapy. Efficacy of immunoglobulins in chronic B19 infection has been demonstrated.

The human parvovirus B19 has been identified as the causative agent in several diseases, including the benign childhood condition erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a polyarthropathy that occurs in adults, aplastic crisis and hydrops fetalis. The virus has also been associated with numerous other hematologic, neurologic and rheumatic conditions. Except for the potential of neonatal death due to fetal hydrops, the prognosis of patients with parvovirus infection is generally good. The diagnosis of B19 infection may be established on clinical grounds but often requires confirmation with serum

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a known cause of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anemias. When patients with malignant diseases are infected by B19 during chemotherapy, erythroid suppression of bone marrow sometimes occurs. We performed a retrospective investigation of B19 infection among 95 children with malignant diseases in our hospital during the past 14 years. By the method of dot blot hybridization, 9 of 95 patients were found to be positive for B19 DNA during chemotherapy. All 9 patients had reticulocytopenia at the time B19 DNA was dete

Parvoviruses have long been associated with disabling and even fatal illnesses in animals. The discovery of the human parvovirus B-19 in 1975 (1) and subsequent studies of its effects in humans identified this virus as the causative agent of erythema infectiosum ("fifth disease") in children. (2). Erythema infectiosum (EI) is a common, self-limited infectious disorder in children, easily recognized by the classic "slapped cheek" facial erythema and fine reticular rash. Only in the 1980s have further investigations linked HPV B-19 infection with more significant clinical syndromes, among which
