Drug-Induced Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus Associated with Fenofibrate Lipid Lowering Agent.

A 53-year-old woman presented with an eruption on her face and body for 2 weeks that had developed first on the face before spreading to the trunk and extremities. There was burning with sunlight exposure. Her medical conditions included diabetes mellitus, vitamin D deficiency, and hyperlipidemia. Her treatment for the past 4 years included metformin, saxagliptin, atorvastatin, vitamin B12, vitamin D, lansoprazole, and aspirin. Because atorvastatin did not control her lipids, fenofibrate was prescribed. At 3 months, she developed photodermatitis on the sun-exposed areas of her skin and also on

Drug-induced subacute cutaneous lupus erythematous from cenobamate: case presentation and review of the literature.

A 68-year-old woman with a history of seizures on cenobamate presented with an itchy rash all over her body. The rash started about one month prior to her presentation to the dermatology clinic. The rash was initially treated with topical triamcinolone with improvement at one-month follow-up. However, four months later the rash flared and there was concern that cenobamate was the cause. Biopsy was performed showing vacuolar interface dermatitis with atrophy, suggestive of subacute lupus erythematosus. Blood work revealed positive antinuclear antibody, anti-ribonucleoprotein antibody, Sjogren A

A Case of Rowell Syndrome: Excellent Response to Oral Cyclosporine.

Lupus erythematosus is a multisystem disease which frequently involves the skin. There are several variants of cutaneous lupus, which are defined and classified by the location and the depth of the inflammatory infiltrate, adnexal involvement, presence or absence of interphase dermatitis, and chronology (1). The most common clinical subtypes are acute, subacute and chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus; however, other rare specific and non-specific cutaneous involvements also exist (2). Rowell syndrome is one of these rare specific variants and was originally described as the association of lu

Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus Secondary to Intravenous Immunoglobulin Infusions.

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) is a variant of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) characterized by distinct skin lesions. Clinical manifestations typically include annular or psoriasiform skin lesions, often localized in sun-exposed areas such as the chest and back. The pathogenesis of SCLE is largely unknown, and contributing factors include genetics, environmental exposures, and immunological dysregulation. SCLE may be idiopathic or drug-induced, with common triggers being calcium channel blockers, thiazide diuretics, and terbinafine. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatme

Dermoscopy for the Differentiation of Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus from Other Erythematous Desquamative Dermatoses-Psoriasis, Nummular Eczema, Mycosis Fungoides and Pityriasis Rosea.

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) is a condition that might pose a diagnostic challenge. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of videodermoscopy in the differentiation of SCLE from other erythematous-desquamative dermatoses. Consecutive patients with SCLE (n = 27), psoriasis (n = 36), nummular eczema (n = 30), mycosis fungoides (n = 26), and pityriasis rosea (n = 20) referred to our Department of Dermatology were recruited for this study. A representative lesion was visualized using a Canfield D200EVO Videodermatoscope (Canfield Scientific GmbH, Bielefeld, Germany) an

Phototoxic reaction to oral terbinafine due to Tinea capitis in a child.

We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who developed a phototoxic skin reaction to terbinafine on his scalp, ears, and face in the form of disseminated erythematous plaques, which resembled subacute lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in their clinical presentation. Skin changes appeared a short time after the boy was exposed to sunlight during the period of time when he was treated with oral terbinafine due to Microsporum canis fungal scalp infection. Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection primarily affecting prepubertal children (1). Microsporum canis remains the predominant causative or

Acrodermatitis Enteropathica: A Case Report Involving a Delayed Diagnosis.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a hereditary autosomal recessive disorder caused by a defect in zinc metabolism, leading to a zinc deficiency. We report a case of a two-year-old female infant who presented with psoriasiform-eczematous skin lesions with acral distribution in all four extremities one month after weaning from breast milk at five months old. The patient had no history of diarrhea or hair loss and had been misdiagnosed with tinea corporis and treated with topical and systemic antifungals for a year without benefit. She had also been misdiagnosed as having psoriasis and treated

BACKGROUND: In December 2023, our hospital confirmed a case of systemic lupus erythematosus complicated with Mycobacterium leprae infection. The patient has extensive patchy erythema on the back and face, with obvious itching. There are multiple subcutaneous masses on both hands, some of which are accompanied by tenderness, wave sensation, and other symptoms. The patient's mother has a history of leprosy and close contact with the patient. The patient tested positive for syphilis antibodies 2 years ago and did not receive formal treatment. There is no other history of chronic illness. METHODS

Autoimmunity-related neutrophilic dermatosis after coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination: A case report and literature review.

Autoimmune diseases triggered by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA vaccination have been emerging. Here, we report the case of a 27-year-old Japanese man with autoimmunity-related neutrophilic dermatosis, occurring as an initial cutaneous manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus with Sjögren syndrome after the second dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination. The patient presented with urticarial erythema and partially annular erythema on the trunk and extremities with severe pruritus. Histopathological analysis showed vacuolar degeneration at the dermo-epidermal junction an

Neonatal lupus erythematosus presenting as a non-bullous histiocytoid neutrophilic dermatosis.

Histopathologic findings in neonatal lupus erythematosus (NLE) are usually congruent with those of subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. However, neutrophilic dermatosis-type histopathologic features are being increasingly recognized in the literature including rare cases with variant histiocytoid morphology. We report the case of a 7-week-old male presenting with figurate erythema. His mother was found to have elevated anti-nuclear antibodies and was positive for anti-SSA/Ro, anti-SSB/La antibodies and Ro52 autoantibodies. The infant had a similar serological profile. Skin biopsy showed a h

Autoimmune Skin Conditions: Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus.

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) is a spectrum of autoimmune skin conditions associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). CLE and SLE may exist concurrently or independently. Accurate recognition of CLE is crucial because it may herald systemic disease onset. Lupus-specific skin conditions include acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ACLE) which manifests as a malar or butterfly rash; subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE); and chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, which includes discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). All three types of CLE present as pink-violet macules or plaqu

Panoramic view of clinical features of lupus erythematosus: a cross-sectional multicentre study from China.

OBJECTIVE: Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a complicated disease with highly heterogeneous clinical manifestations. Previous studies have rarely included all subgroups of patients with lupus and have overlooked the importance of the cutaneous manifestations thereof. We aimed to compare the demographic and clinical differences among patients with different subtypes of lupus. METHODS: This is the first real-world study with a relatively large sample size that simultaneously includes patients with isolated cutaneous lupus erythematosus (iCLE) and SLE. All samples were obtained from the Lupus Erythem

Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus as a rare complication of disease-modifying therapy administration in multiple sclerosis: case report.

BACKGROUND: Teriflunomide, the active metabolite of leflunomide, is a disease-modifying therapy drug used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), yet the complications associated with this drug remain not fully understood. Here we present the rare case of a 28-year-old female MS patient who developed subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) following teriflunomide treatment. Though SCLE has been reported to be associated with leflunomide, the current report represents the first documented evidence demonstrating SCLE as a potential teriflunomide treatment-related complication. Collagen Vascular Diseases: A Review of Cutaneous and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Dermatomyositis, and Distinguishing Features in Skin of Color.

Collagen vascular diseases such as lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis (DM) occur 2 to 3 times more often among patients with skin of color. In this article, the authors review DM and cutaneous lupus erythematosus, including acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, and discoid lupus erythematosus. They discuss the distinguishing features between these entities and highlight distinct presentations and management considerations in patients with skin of color to aid in prompt and correct diagnoses in this patient population.
