Assessment of Measles Immunity in the Croatian Population: A Retrospective Seroprevalence Study, 2015-2025.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. Maintaining a high level of measles immunity in the population is essential due to the extremely high transmissibility of the measles virus (MV). We analyzed the MV seroprevalence in the Croatian population. METHODS: A total of 1998 individuals tested consecutively for MV antibodies from 2015 to 2025 inclusive were included. MV IgG antibodies were detected using a commercial ELISA. RESULTS: The overall seroprevalence rate was 75.1%, with significant yearly differences, ranging from 50.0 to 86.5%, and a declining trend

Molecular Characterization of Measles and Rubella Virus Strains from the 2018-2019 Epidemic in Madagascar.

Madagascar experienced a severe measles epidemic between September 2018 and mid-2019, resulting in more than 146,000 cases and 1200 deaths, primarily among children under 15 years of age. This epidemic occurred in a context of low vaccination coverage. Prior to this outbreak, no genotyping data were available for the measles virus (MeV) or rubella virus (RuV) in Madagascar. This study aimed to molecularly characterize MeV and RuV strains circulating during the epidemic. A total of 310 biological samples (gingival swabs, urine, and stool) were collected from 288 suspected cases with a mean age

How Is Lebanon's Progress Towards Measles Elimination? Review of Surveillance Performance Indicators, 2013-2024.

BACKGROUND: Lebanon adopted the World Health Organization (WHO)'s regional strategic plan (2012-2020) to achieve measles elimination. We aimed to analyze WHO measles surveillance performance indicators to identify areas for improvement. METHODS: We reviewed suspected measles and rubella cases notified to the national epidemiological surveillance program between January 2013 and December 2024. A suspected case was defined as any patient with a febrile maculopapular rash or considered clinically compatible by physicians. We assessed notification rates of discarded non-measles/rubella suspected

Hospital-based surveillance suggested a high frequency of congenital rubella syndrome and the presence of genetically diverse genotype 2B rubella virus strains in Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the burden of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) and to provide baseline genotype data for monitoring future rubella control efforts in Ethiopia. METHODS: Between 2022 and 2023, active surveillance for CRS was conducted among infants at selected public hospitals in Addis Ababa. Demographic and clinical data, blood, and respiratory samples were collected. Serum samples were tested for rubella-specific IgM and IgG antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Viral RNA was extracted from nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs and subjected to rubell

Determinants of measles-rubella second dose vaccine uptake among children in Mathare informal settlement, Nairobi, Kenya: a mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: measles-rubella remains a major public health concern, with vaccination as the most effective preventive strategy. Despite the introduction of the measles-rubella second dose (MR-2) vaccine to improve immunity, uptake in informal settlements like Mathare, Nairobi, remains suboptimal. This study assessed determinants of MR-2 uptake among children aged 18-59 months in Mathare. METHODS: this cross-sectional analytical study used a convergent mixed- methods design. Quantitative data were collected through structured household surveys, while qualitative insights were obtained from Ke

A self-amplifying RNA vector based on rubella virus for mRNA therapeutics and vaccine applications.

Significant efforts have been made in the burgeoning field of RNA therapies since the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-amplifying RNA (saRNA)-based therapies are considered more promising than conventional messenger RNA due to their lower concentration requirements, long-lasting effects, and self-adjuvanticity. Here, we developed a novel saRNA vector, based on the rubella virus ([RuV], based on the RA27/3 vaccine strain) as an alternative virus-derived replicon that demonstrates effective expression in multiple cell lines and induces immune response. As it is derived from a commonly used vaccine, it po

Epigenetic regulation of fruit shape determination by the JAGGED gene in Capsella rubella.

Fruits are a key feature defining angiosperms, yet how local growth is coordinated during development to generate diverse fruits remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that the Capsella rubella C2H2-zinc finger transcription factor JAGGED (CrJAG) controls fruit shape determination by promoting both cell division and anisotropic growth. At the molecular level, CrJAG physically interacts with members of the Capsella rubella MULTICOPY SUPPRESSOR OF IRA1 (CrMSI)  histone chaperone family, increasing the chromatin accessibility and thereby sustaining the expression of genes involved in fruit morphog

Community-Led Defaulter Tracking for Catch-Up Vaccination: Implementation Experience in Uganda, 2022 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, COVID-19-related disruptions increased the number of children who missed scheduled routine vaccination (defaulters). Identifying and following up with defaulter children is important for improving vaccination coverage. This paper describes Uganda's experience in revitalizing community-led defaulter tracking to improve vaccination coverage post-COVID-19 in four purposefully selected districts. METHODS: During two 6-month periods in 2022 and 2024, healthcare workers (HCWs) worked with village health teams (VHTs) to review health facility-based immunization registers, iden

Lessons for Immunisation Policy and Practice From the Deadly Measles Resurgence in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is experiencing one of the deadliest outbreaks of measles in 2026, with at least 472 suspected child deaths and over 67,079 suspected cases as of 27 May 2026. It has happened primarily following a fall in measles vaccination coverage in 2025, largely due to the cancellation of a planned 2024 Measles-Rubella vaccination Campaign and major political unrest. This editorial, based on available surveillance data, disease transmission modelling and lower vaccination coverage, argues that the 2026 measles outbreak was predictable, preventable and needed prompt action and management. We urg

A multi-prefecture rubella outbreak associated with technical intern training for foreign workers in Japan, 2016: Implications for sustaining rubella elimination verified in 2025.

Rubella elimination in Japan was verified in September 2025; however, importation and immunity gaps can still precipitate outbreaks. We investigated a multi-prefecture rubella outbreak in 2016 linked to an introductory training course for foreign workers. After a rubella case was reported in Saitama Prefecture on June 6, 2016, we investigated the training facility and conducted active nationwide surveillance. We collected roster and dispatch information, monitored cases reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases, and interviewed trainees, host-company staff. N

Measles outbreaks as signals of governance failure: Lessons from Bangladesh's 2026 immunisation collapse.

Bangladesh's 2026 measles outbreak followed an abrupt decline in measles-rubella vaccination coverage-from above 95% to approximately 57% within a single programme cycle-after more than a decade of stable high performance. This commentary argues that the collapse reflects institutional disruption linked to health sector restructuring in 2025, rather than demand side failure or vaccine hesitancy. Administrative reorganisation weakened accountability, disrupted logistics, and led to the cancellation of planned catch up activities, removing key compensatory mechanisms at a critical moment. Routin

Spatial distribution and associated factors influencing 2024 Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign coverage among children aged 9-59 months in Mainland Tanzania: A multi-level mixed-effect analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, measles remains a major cause of child mortality, and rubella is the leading cause of birth defects among all infectious diseases. In Mainland Tanzania, eliminating measles and rubella remains challenging due to geographical diversity, uneven healthcare facilities distribution, and socio-economic disparities across regions. Understanding spatial patterns and associated determinants of vaccination coverage is essential for improving campaign effectiveness. This study aimed to explore the spatial distribution and associated factors of measles-rubella campaign coverage amo

Age-specific hospitalization dynamics during a measles outbreak in Nyanza District, Southern Province, Rwanda, 2026: A survival analysis with implications for clinical management.

BACKGROUND: Measles remains a leading cause of vaccine-preventable mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite Rwanda's high routine immunization coverage and introduction of a two-dose measles-rubella schedule, persistent immunity gaps continue to drive localized outbreaks. Understanding how age influences hospitalization duration during outbreaks is critical for optimizing clinical management and resource allocation, yet evidence using robust time-to-event methods remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 56 confirmed measles cases id
