The Challenging Management of Rheumatoid Arthritis Overlapping With Graves' Disease in a Young Male: A Case Report.

Autoimmune disorders occur when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. Generally, these disorders are more prevalent in female patients. The presence of one autoimmune disease can alter the immune system's balance, making the individual more susceptible to developing other autoimmune conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis and Graves' disease are two examples of autoimmune conditions that can overlap in the same patient. In this case report, we present a unique scenario of a male patient initially exhibiting symptoms suggestive of gravis' disease. The subsequent emergence of sig

Antidepressant resistance and risks of prior atopic and autoimmune diseases among adolescents and young adults with major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents significantly impacts cognitive, social, academic, and physical health. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) poses additional challenges, increasing the risk of long-term impairment, hospitalizations, and comorbidities. This study explores the association between prior atopic and autoimmune diseases and the risk of antidepressant-responsive depression (ARPD) and antidepressant-resistant depression (ARTD) in adolescents and young adults. A total of 4770 participants with ARTD, 19,080 with ARPD, and 19,080 controls were analyzed. Results indicate th

Association between autoimmune diseases and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists: A real-world evidence study.

INTRODUCTION: The therapeutic advantages of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) in diabetes management have been demonstrated. However, their potential association with autoimmune diseases remains unknown. Using a comprehensive real-world dataset, this study compared GLP-1 RAs against dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is) with respect to the incidence of autoimmune diseases. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study, with an active-comparator and new-user design, analyzed data from the TriNetX US Collaborative Network. We identified 4,841,560 patients aged over 18 years

Dioscorea nipponica Makino: Unraveling multi-target mechanisms and clinical potential in autoimmune disease therapy.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are characterized by high prevalence, severity, and a significant impact on quality of life. Conventional treatments, such as corticosteroids and biologics, often lead to adverse reactions. Traditional Chinese medicine, with its multi-component and multi-target characteristics, demonstrates potential as an alternative therapy for ADs. In traditional Chinese medicine, Dioscorea nipponica Makino (DnM) is often used in the treatment of rheumatic diseases and type 1 diabetes, among other autoimmune conditions. Therefore, we delve into the a

Autoimmune Hepatitis Associated with Other Autoimmune Diseases: A Critical Review.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is an inflammatory liver disease influenced by genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors. Individuals diagnosed with AIH may exhibit concurrent autoimmune manifestations affecting multiple organ systems. The prevalence of AIH associated with other autoimmune diseases has been reported to range from 20% to 40%. This review indicates that the associations between AIH and autoimmune thyroiditis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease, and celiac disease appear to be significant. However, the associations between AIH and primary sclerosing chol

Sex Differences in Autoimmune Multimorbidity Across Eleven Disorders: A Real-World Primary Care Study in Germany.

Background and Objectives: While most studies have focused on the incidence, pathogenesis, and severity of individual autoimmune diseases (AIDs), limited attention has been given to autoimmune multimorbidity-the co-occurrence of multiple AIDs in a single individual. This study aims to examine sex differences in autoimmune multimorbidity across eleven AIDs in a real-world setting. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed data from the Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA) and included 164,596 individuals who visited one of 1037 primary care physicians in 2024. Predicted T-Cell and B-Cell Epitopes of NIS: Where Do Sjögren's Syndrome and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Converge?

The sodium iodide symporter (NIS) is a key protein in thyroid function responsible for iodine uptake, and it may be involved in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis. However, it is also expressed in the salivary glands, the primary target of autoreactive cells in Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Given the common link between the two diseases, we computationally investigated whether the epitopes of NIS can trigger an immune response leading to SS in Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) patients genetically predisposed to both diseases. The TepiTool 2016, ABCpred 2006, and DiscoTope 2.0 servers were used

An HTLV-1 carrier with sporadic late-onset nemaline myopathy accompanied by skin lesions indicating indolent adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and Sjögren's syndrome: a case report and literature review.

Sporadic late-onset nemaline myopathy (SLONM) is a rare acquired myopathy. Herein, we report a rare case of co-occurring SLONM, indolent adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), and Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in a 60-year-old woman who was a human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) carrier. She presented with sub-acute proximal muscle weakness and chest erythema. Muscle biopsy revealed perivascular inflammation and accumulation of nemaline bodies in the atrophic fibers. Skin biopsy indicated indolent ATL. Analysis of specific antibodies and salivary gland biopsy led to a SS diagnosis. CD4-positiv

Causality between rheumatic diseases and iron-deficiency anemia: A 2-sample, 2-step mediation Mendelian randomization investigation.

Growing evidence suggests that patients with rheumatic disease are associated with iron-deficiency anemia (IDA). However, the causal relationship between rheumatic disease and IDA risk remains unclear. To investigate this, we conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study using genetic variants from the large genome-wide association studies. In this study, we primarily investigated common rheumatic diseases, which include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjogren syndrome (SS), systemic sclerosis (SSc) as exposures, with IDA as the outcome and iron status as the me

Association Between Rheumatoid Arthritis and the Risk of Incident Degenerative Valvular Heart Disease: Evidence From a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that degenerative valvular heart disease (VHD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) share overlapping risk factors and intersecting inflammatory processes; however, their interrelationship remains insufficiently explored. METHODS: Among 492 745 UK Biobank participants without VHD at baseline, Cox proportional hazards models were conducted to assess the association between prevalent RA and new-onset degenerative VHD, with sequential adjustments for demographic factors, lifestyle variables, and comorbidities. The end points of degenerative VHD in this study
