BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease are forms of inflammatory arthritis which may have similar presentations. There is growing recognition that these conditions can coexist, especially in elderly patients. This systematic literature review aims to examine the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of patients with both RA and CPPD disease.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed from database inception to 31st January 2026 using the databases EMBASE, MEDLINE, Scopus, PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane. Keywords relating to RA, C

Rotator cuff tear arthropathy (RCTA) is a complex condition characterized by rotator cuff insufficiency, altered shoulder kinematics, and progressive joint degeneration. In advanced stages, it results in pain, loss of active elevation, and significant functional impairment. Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is now the best surgical option for advanced RCTA because it restores shoulder elevation by changing how the joint works and making the rotator cuff less important. The original RSA concept focused on medialization and distalization of the center of rotation to increase the deltoid moment

OBJECTIVES: Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is a common form of arthritis affecting older individuals. This disease is characterised by high levels of pyrophosphate in articular cartilage, resulting in calcium pyrophosphate crystal formation in humans and inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. A loss-of-function mutation in the TNFRSF11B locus (also known as CCAL1), which encodes osteoprotegerin (OPG) causes familial CPPD. OPG acts as a decoy receptor for RANKL, thereby inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and activity. CPPD currently lacks any animal models. The goal of thi

Septic arthritis of the knee is an acute infection that can rapidly destroy articular cartilage if not promptly recognized and treated. Early diagnosis is often difficult because symptoms overlap with crystal or inflammatory arthropathies and post-traumatic effusions, while fever and laboratory markers may be absent or nonspecific. Synovial fluid analysis remains the diagnostic cornerstone, but imaging is essential to confirm effusion, define the extent of synovitis and periarticular involvement, and detect complications such as osteomyelitis or abscess. Radiography provides a rapid baseline,

The purpose of this study was to characterize the short-term effects of Achilles tendon ruptures on medial gastrocnemius. We hypothesized that the fascicles of the medial gastrocnemius muscle of the injured Achilles tendon would be shorter and more pennate immediately following the injury and would persist throughout 4 weeks post-injury. B-mode longitudinal ultrasound images of the medial gastrocnemius were acquired in 10 adults who suffered acute Achilles tendon ruptures and were treated non-operatively. Ultrasound images were acquired during the initial clinical visit following injury as wel

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness and safety of anakinra in crystal-related disease (CRD) flares, and to identify factors associated with treatment failure and risk of infection.
METHODS: We conducted a single-centre, retrospective, observational study including adult patients treated with anakinra for a CRD flare between January 2011 and July 2024. Patients were identified in a hospital clinical data warehouse using an electronic query. CRD was confirmed by the presence of crystals in synovial fluid or by characteristic radiological features. Clinical and biological data were collected

PURPOSE: To present a series of 37 cases diagnosed with ultrasound (US) of symptomatic hydroxyapatite deposition disease (HADD) involving the wrist and hand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Reports from two institutions were searched using the keywords "HADD hand/wrist" or "calcium deposit hand/wrist". The US examinations were performed with a similar standardized approach, focusing on the region of pain. B-mode and Doppler sonograms were acquired. Each author reviewed the cases to ensure that only cases consistent with HADD were included.
RESULTS: A total of 37 patients were identified, mostly women

BACKGROUND: Admissions for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) are used as an indicator of access and quality of care. Our aim was to estimate hospitalization rates for national indicator ACSCs in people with crystal arthropathies relative to the general population.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based matched cohort study of persons with crystal arthropathies and age and sex-matched unexposed controls using administrative data from Alberta, Canada from years 2002-2023. We applied ICD-10-CA code-based case definitions for Canadian ACSCs. We calculated incidence rate ratios (IRRs)

INTRODUCTION: The coexistence of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and crystal-associated joint disease is an important diagnostic problem in clinical treatment. In patients with established PsA, the presence of new inflammatory responses may indicate disease activity or another pathological state, and thus necessitates differential diagnosis of disease processes and/or a diagnosis of a new disease process.
PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 55-year-old man with chronic PsA who presented with acute monoarticular inflammation of the left wrist that was refractory to standard antiinflammatory treatm

BACKGROUND: Tophaceous gout masses are characterized by the accumulation of monosodium urate crystals in peripheral joints and soft tissues. The most commonly involved areas are the metatarsophalangeal and knee joints. Finger/hand localization is uncommon. If not correctly treated, a finger tophaceous mass can grow and, in rare cases, reach an abnormally large size, termed "giant."
AIM: The aim of our study is to present a rare case of a large tophaceous mass of the hand, localized in the fourth finger, and to highlight the role of surgical excision combined with a multidisciplinary team appr

RATIONALE: The wrist joint represents one of the most commonly affected anatomical sites in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, yet it remains underreported in the literature, frequently leading to diagnostic errors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of acute pseudogout of the wrist whose symptoms mimicked cellulitis. Our patient presented with a swollen hand, which was initially treated as acute cellulitis with antibiotics, but without any improvement.
DIAGNOSES: A final diagnosis of acute chondrocalcinosis was made based on multiple intra-articular calcifications.
OUTCOMES: The pa

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of Juanbi Lijieqing Decoction (JLD) in alleviating acute gouty arthritis (AGA) by modulating PPARγ expression to suppress the TLR4/NF-κB pathway.
METHODS: A total of 84 male SD rats were divided into 7 groups of 12 rats. One group was randomly selected as the normal control group (Group A), while the remaining 72 rats were used to establish an acute gouty arthritis model through intraperitoneal injection of potassium oxonate combined with MSU ankle joint injection. These rats were randomly assigned to the model group (Group B), the h

BACKGROUND Crowned dens syndrome (CDS) is a rare disorder caused by calcium pyrophosphate deposition around the odontoid process. Although most patients respond favorably to conservative management, some develop refractory myelopathy requiring surgical intervention. We present a minimally invasive surgical technique for CDS complicated by spinal cord compression. CASE REPORT An 86-year-old woman with CDS exhibited progressive myelopathy, including thoracoabdominal girdle sensation, gait disturbance ("walking on cotton"), and impaired fine motor function in the upper extremities. Her symptoms w

Uric acid metabolism disorders have become major health concerns, primarily causing conditions such as hyperuricemia, uric acid nephropathy, and gout. Recent research has focused on these disorders' underlying pathological mechanisms and pharmacological treatments, emphasizing the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome. This study aims to analyze and summarize the current research status, hotspots, and trends in this field from a new perspective of the NLRP3 inflammasome, providing insights for future research and disease treatment. Based on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), this study syste

INTRODUCTION: Calcific tendinitis (hydroxyapatite deposition disease) most commonly affects the shoulder and peri-trochanteric hip region. Involvement of the linea aspera is uncommon and may mimic aggressive pathology due to associated cortical reaction and marrow edema.
CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old female presented with predominantly right-sided upper thigh pain. Radiographs demonstrated amorphous calcification along the lateral proximal femur at the linea aspera. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a calcific focus with marked adjacent marrow and soft-tissue edema on the right, while the contra

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic inflammatory arthritis and a leading cause of disability worldwide. However, several diseases may mimic RA, particularly in patients presenting with polyarticular pain or seronegative inflammatory arthritis. Misdiagnosis may result in inappropriate immunosuppressive therapy and delayed treatment of the underlying disease. Recognizing these mimickers remains a critical challenge in rheumatology practice. We conducted a retrospective case series of patients evaluated at a tertiary rheumatology center between January 2021 and December 2025. Pat

OBJECTIVE: The long-term interaction between cardiovascular (CV) risk profiles and gout may influence the risk of cardiovascular events. However, the impact of gout and long-term changes in CV risk profile on CV events is unclear.
METHODS: This was a nationwide cohort study based on the Korean National Health Insurance claims database and the National Health Screening Program. Patients aged 20-90 years newly diagnosed with gout after January 2012 and age- and sex-matched controls without gout were included. After adjusting for CV risk profiles measured 10 years before gout diagnosis and their

OBJECTIVE: Prior imaging studies have suggested that monosodium urate (MSU) crystal deposits in joints dissolve more rapidly than those in tendons during urate-lowering therapy (ULT) for gout. This study aimed to examine whether urate deposits visible on dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) reduce at different rates in joints and tendons during ULT.
METHODS: Participants with gout from 2 clinical trials of oral ULT with the following criteria were included: paired DECT scans of the feet and ankles over 1-year of ULT, first DECT scan showing total urate volume ≥ 0.5 cm3, second DECT scan sho
