Immunogenicity and safety of HepE Hecolin® in chronic hepatitis B patients at clinically stable stage: An open-label study in China.

Acute hepatitis E infection could induce severe outcomes among chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. Between 2016 and 2017, an open-label study was conducted to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of hepatitis E vaccine (HepE) in CHB patients, using healthy adults as parallel controls in China. Eligible participants who were aged ≥30 y were enrolled in the study. The CHB group included participants who had ever developed symptoms of hepatitis because of CHB but was currently at a clinically stable stage, which was defined as ALT ≤ 1.5 times of upper limit of the normal range (ULN) in this stu

Seroepidemiological Survey of Hepatitis E Virus in Intensive Pig Farming in Vojvodina Province, Serbia.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the causative agent of acute hepatitis E infection in humans. Two epidemiological patterns of the disease exist-endemic and sporadic. Genotypes 1 (HEV-1) and 2 (HEV-2) are transmitted through contaminated water and are responsible for the outbreaks of many large-scale epidemics in developing countries of Asia and Africa. Genotypes 3 (HEV-3) and 4 (HEV-4) have zoonotic potential and cause sporadic cases and small outbreaks in high-income countries. The first case of HEV infection in swine was confirmed in 1997 and later detected in other animal species. The aim of thi

A case of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura induced by acute hepatitis E and successfully controlled by lymphoplasmapheresis plus rituximab.

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia is a common extrahepatic manifestation of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection and is usually transient and self-limited. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare and lethal blood disorder characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, severe thrombocytopenia, and organ involvement. The link between HEV infection and TTP is still unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old female was referred to our hospital with complaints of fever, fatigue, nausea and jaundice for 10 days. Liver dysfunction, positive IgM and IgG of HEV, and HEV-RNA viremia prompted th

The predictive value of fibrosis profiles for hepatitis E virus-related liver failure among hospitalized patients with acute hepatitis E: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an important etiology of liver failure. This study aimed to explore the associations of blood fibrosis profiles with HEV-related liver failure (HEV-LF) onset and evaluate their prediction performance in hospitalized patients with acute hepatitis E. METHODS: Participants were obtained from two tertiary medical centers in Jiangsu, China, between January 2018 and November 2024. Cox proportional hazards regression, restricted cubic splines, and threshold effect analysis were used to examine associations between fibrosis markers and HEV-LF risk. The

Heterogeneity in the seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus among hospital attendees: a retrospective study in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is endemic in China. However, there are scarce data of HEV infection among hospital attendees seeking medical treatment or examination for various reasons. OBJECTIVE: We aim to investigate the prevalence and incidence of HEV infection by time, age, sex, and across departments in a tertiary hospital. METHODS: Paired results of anti-HEV immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM of 31,181 unique subjects during 2021-2022 were analysed. RESULTS: Overall seropositivity (95% confidence interval) of anti-HEV IgG and IgM was 41.25% (40.71%-41.80%) and 2.35% (2.19%

Burden of acute hepatitis E virus in South Asia: Insights from Global Burden of Disease study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Despite global progress, South Asian countries account for a disproportionate burden of Acute hepatitis E (AHE). Understanding the burden of AHE in this region is crucial for targeted interventions. METHODS: We used Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data to assess the burden of AHE across eight South Asian countries from 1990 to 2021. Joinpoint regression was used to analyze temporal trends and Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC) was calculated to quantify trends. The relationship between age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDR) and socio-demographic ind

Hepatitis E in the pediatric population: An overlooked disease but a genuine concern?

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant yet underdiagnosed cause of acute and chronic hepatitis, particularly in pediatric populations. While HEV infection in children is often asymptomatic or mild, it can progress to severe outcomes in immunocompromised patients, such as organ transplant recipients or those undergoing chemotherapy. HEV genotypes 1 and 2 are predominantly responsible for waterborne outbreaks in endemic regions, whereas genotypes 3 and 4 are associated with zoonotic transmission in developed countries. Emerging evidence also links HEV to extrahepatic manifestations, including
