Use of serum levels of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1α in chronic hepatitis C.

Immunoregulatory cytokines influence the persistence of hepatitis C virus chronic infection and the extent of liver damage. Interleukin-1 plays an important role in the inflammatory process. Some studies have demonstrated that IL-1 production was impaired in patients with chronic infections of hepatitis C virus, implying that IL-1 may play a role in viral clearance. In this study, along with routine laboratory tests, has been performed the analysis of serum levels of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1α in order of better understanding and monitoring of chronic hepatitis C. The aim of study was to a

Histopathological aspects described in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

Chronic hepatitis C affects an estimated 170 million people worldwide and causes approximately 350 000 deaths each year. The current antiviral therapy allows the virus eradication or the permanent inhibition of the virus replication (sustained virological response, SVR), the reduction of the inflammation, and the prevention or the reduction of liver fibrogenesis (histological response). We studied the histopathological aspects found during percutaneous liver biopsy in patients with chronic hepatitis C viral infection who were treated and monitored over a period of two years. The assessment of

Non-invasive assessment of liver fibrosis in chronic viral hepatitis.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid (HA), ASAT to Platelet Ratio Index (APRI), ASAT/ALAT ratio, Fibrosis 4 score (FIB4) and FibroScan were studied as non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis (F) in chronic viral hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC), in an attempt to avoid the complications of liver puncture biopsy, considered the gold standard in the evaluation of F. The aim of our research was to study whether HA, APRI, ASAT/ALAT ratio, FIB4 and FibroScan are useful non-invasive markers in predicting severe F in Romanian patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective multicenter transversal and obser

Qualitative analysis of patient-centered decision attributes associated with initiating hepatitis C treatment.

BACKGROUND: In this era of a constantly changing landscape of antiviral treatment options for chronic viral hepatitis C (CHC), shared clinical decision-making addresses the need to engage patients in complex treatment decisions. However, little is known about the decision attributes that CHC patients consider when making treatment decisions. We identify key patient-centered decision attributes, and explore relationships among these attributes, to help inform the development of a future CHC shared decision-making aid. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews with CHC patients at four Ve

Contemporary use of elastography in liver fibrosis and portal hypertension.

The risk and speed of progression from fibrosis to compensated and decompensated cirrhosis define the prognosis in liver diseases. Therefore, early detection and preventive strategies affect outcomes. Patients with liver disease have traditionally been diagnosed at an advanced stage of disease, in part due to lack of non-invasive markers. Ultrasound elastography to measure liver stiffness can potentially change this paradigm. The purpose of this review was therefore to summarize advances in the field of ultrasound elastography with focus on diagnosis of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and clinically

[THE ROLE OF CYTOKINES AND CHEMOKINES IN LABORATORY DIAGNOSTIC OF CHRONIC VIRAL HEPATITIS C].

The chronic viral hepatitis C is widely prevalent disease with prolonged persistence of virus and obliterated clinical picture. The present techniques of diagnostic of degree of fibrosis of liver and prognosis of course of disease have particular shortcomings. Hence, search of safe low invasive methods based on blood biomarkers is an actual task. The cytokines/chemokines (mediators of chronic inflammation) directly involved into immunopathogenesis of chronic viral hepatitis C can act in the capacity of biomarkers. The study was carried out to comprehensively analyze content of cytokines/chemok

Analysis of Populations of Memory T-Helper Cells Expressing CXCR3 and CCR6 Chemokine Receptors in Peripheral Blood of Patients with Chronic Viral Hepatitis C.

Flow cytometry was employed to examine the content of major populations of memory T helper cells and expression of chemokine receptors CXCR3 and CCR6 on their surface in peripheral blood drawn from virtually healthy people and the patients with chronic viral hepatitis C. The following combination of monoclonal antibodies had been used: CD62LFITC/CD45RA-PE/CD3-ECD/CCR6-PC7/CXCR3-APC/CD4-APC-Cy7. In comparison with control group, the patients with chronic hepatitis C had a smaller number of populations of naïve CD4(+) T cells and central memory CD4(+) T cells but a greater number of terminally d

[UNMODIFIED DIAMETER V. PORTA. IN 79-YEAR-OLD PATIENT WITH CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE AND SEVERE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION IN THE SETTING OF COMPLEX CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE--PATENT FORAMEN OVALE AT THE CONFLUENCE OF THE LEFT PULMONARY VEINS INTO THE V. CAVA SUPERIOR AND MIXED (HCV) LIVER CIRRHOSIS].

The clinical observation and analysis of the reasons for late diagnosis of congenital heart disease is presented. A feature of this observation is diagnosed complex congenital heart defect with shunting of blood in elderly woman with the second disease--chronic viral hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver. Long-term compensation circulation and lack of pulmonary fibrosis in our patient with patent foramen ovale was due to the presence of a second malformation--confluence of the left pulmonary veins in vena cava superior that apparently contributed to the constant lung tissue haemooxygenation.

Detection and significance of cytotoxic cell subsets in biopsies of HCV-infected human livers.

Chronic viral hepatitis C still remains the clinical challenge. Attempts of the immune system to cope with this infection are unsatisfactory. There is a conviction that the main site of interaction between virus (Hepatitis C virus, HCV) and immune system is in situ, i.e., in liver. Natural killer (NK) cells appeared relevant in the acute hepatitis. Less is known about the immune response in the chronic HCV infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of various cytotoxic cell subsets in chronic HCV+ liver tissue and to seek links between them and laboratory data of patients.

[Sarcoïdose in patient with chronic hepatitis C treated with pegylated interferon].

Induced sarcoïdosis during therapy with interferon for chronic viral hepatitis C involves mainly by isolated cutaneous lesions or with lung lesions. Systemic forms are very rare. We report an observation. A 50-year-old patient developed a systemic sarcoïdosis two months after the end of treatment for hepatitis C with pegylated interferon and ribavirin with lung, joint and hepatic manifestations. After starting corticosteroid therapy, the evolution was favourable. Induced sarcoïdosis by interferon therapy is rare, treatment necessitates stopping interferon, and sometimes corticosteroid therapy.
