Navigating the landscape of targeted therapies for renal cell carcinoma in the era of precision medicine (Review).

Following the publication of the above article, a concerned reader drew to the authors' attention that, regarding the images of the mouse embryo fibroblast (MEF) cells with senescence‑associated β‑galactosidase (SA‑β‑gal) staining shown in Fig. 1B on p. 3254, the panels on the far left and the far right on the bottom row of data [showing treatments with 0 µM and 40 µM adjudin respectively in the presence of hydroxyurea (HU)] contained an overlapping section of data (albeit after turning the right‑hand panel through 90°), such that data which were intended to show the results from differently p

Lyell´s syndrome associated with the use of topical agents: case report.

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. Iturin A disrupts Cryptococcus neoformans membrane integrity, attenuates virulence, and synergizes with amphotericin B.

BACKGROUND: Use of the ergot-derived dopamine receptor agonists (cabergoline and pergolide) is associated with an increased risk of cardiac valvulopathy. Pergolide was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 because of the risk of valvular heart disease, while the European Medicines Agency (EMA) required a reduction in the maximum daily dosage of cabergoline and pergolide from 6 mg/day to 3 mg/day in 2008. In Japan, the package inserts of both drugs were revised in April 2007 to request that physicians conduct periodic ultrasonic cardiography (UCG) examinations for patients taking cabergoline or

Plasma fractionation in Latin America: a path towards sovereignty and sustainability in the supply of plasma-derived medicines.

PURPOSE: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) released by NADPH oxidase and inflammation are associated with arterial hypertension and eye diseases associated with high blood pressure, including glaucoma, retinopathies (e.g., age-related macular degeneration), and choroidopathies affecting ocular function; however, the mechanisms underlying these adverse outcomes remain undefined. The present study was designed to highlight the importance of oxidative stress in severe hypertension-related eye damage. METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 7, unless otherwise specified for specific experiments) wer

From Dermatology to Nephrology: Unveiling Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a rare form of pauci-immune vasculitis that primarily affects the respiratory tract and kidneys, though it can involve virtually any organ system. As a systemic vasculitis, it targets small- and medium-sized blood vessels and is associated with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), particularly those directed against proteinase 3 (PR3). Due to its nonspecific symptoms and variable clinical presentation, GPA requires a high index of suspicion for timely diagnosis. Early treatment is essential, as the

Strawberry Gingivitis as the Primary Sign of ANCA-Negative Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis (GPA): A Case Report.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) could be a lethal disease if not diagnosed and managed timely. Oral involvement is rare and often presents as gingival hyperplasia with a traditional "strawberry gingivitis" appearance. Dental practitioners may be the first ones to encounter WG and may be able to prevent disease progression like the present case by knowing the signs of the disease, early diagnosis, and management.

A Complicated Case of Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis, formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a condition often presenting with granulomatous vasculitis of both the upper and lower respiratory tracts together with glomerulonephritis. Here we present a case of a 17-year-old female patient, who presented with symptoms of pansinusitis with other symptoms gradually following. She was treated with cyclophosphamide which was later switched to rituximab and is now in remission.

Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: A Focus on Differences and Similarities Between Child and Adult Patients.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), or granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), is a rare autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation in various organs, including the kidneys. Renal involvement in GPA is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in both adults and children, and early detection and effective treatment are essential for preventing renal failure. This review aims to summarize the current evidence on the incidence, clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of renal involvement in children with Wegener's granulomatosis. The incidence of renal involvement in children with GPA ranged fr

Rhinoplasty in a Patient with Collapsed Nose Secondary to Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Lactobacillus rhamnosus endocarditis is a rare but significant complication in patients with mechanical heart valves. We present a case of a 73-year-old male with a mechanical aortic valve who developed endocarditis following a routine dental cleaning, despite receiving standard of care prophylactic antibiotics. Blood cultures confirmed L. rhamnosus, and imaging highlighted persistent inflammation around the mechanical valve. Management focused on evolving antibiotic therapy with close routine monitoring. This case underscores the diagnostic challenges and therapeutic complexities

Pediatric Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis: A Case Report Compared to a Case Review in the Last 10 Years.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), previously described as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a rare autoimmune disease that causes necrotizing systemic vasculitis, affecting small- and medium-sized blood vessels. While adults typically receive GPA diagnoses more frequently, children and adolescents can also experience it, albeit infrequently. In pediatric patients, the disease presents challenges due to its rarity and complex clinical symptoms. Early detection and treatment are essential for minimizing long-term complications and improving outcomes. We conducted a literature review that includ

A Curious Case of Pediatric Granulomatosis and Polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a rare, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by granulomatous inflammation and necrotizing vasculitis. While most cases occur in adults, pediatric presentations are becoming more recognized, often with atypical symptoms. We present the case of a 9-year-old girl who presented with a 3-week history of unilateral proptosis, a persistent cough, and mild fatigue. Her presentation and findings varied between infection and the inflammatory process. Histopathology of an orbital and ethmoid sinus biopsy revealed

Successful reversal of complete heart block in granulomatosis with polyangiitis without permanent pacing: a case report with literature review.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a rare antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis primarily affecting the respiratory tract and kidneys. Cardiac involvement in GPA, though uncommon, can lead to life-threatening arrhythmias like complete heart block (CHB). A 33-year-old male with a 12-year history of GPA presented with syncope, palpitations, and reduced consciousness. He had discontinued his medications 3 months earlier. Clinical findings included sensorineural hearing loss, saddle-nose deformity, chronic dacryocystiti

[Prostate involvement in granulomatosis with polyangiitis].

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener's granulomatosis, ANCA-associated vasculitis) is a rare systemic disease with unclear etiology, raising many questions in the interpretation of changes in internal organs during computed tomography and the assessment of diagnostic signs during pathohistological examination of biopsy/autopsy material. This paper describes a rare clinical observation of granulomatosis with polyangiitis in a 62-year-old patient with lung, kidney, and prostate lesions.

The joint ınvolvement pattern of granulomatous polangiitis changed? Multicenter study.

OBJECTIVES: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) formerly Wegener's granulomatosis is a type of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) typically associated with necrotizing, granulomatous inflammation. Musculoskeletal manifestations have been described in 40-65% of patients. Arthritis usually occurs as large, single and asymmetric joint involvement, but rarely symmetrical small joint involvement may also occur. We present 56 cases whose initial presentation was mostly symmetrical and polyarthritis, which caused a significant diagnostic delay. METHODS: Fifty-si

Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis (Wegener Granulomatosis): Then and Now.

CONTEXT.—: In 1954 Godman and Churg published an article in the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine entitled "Wegener's Granulomatosis" (now replaced by "granulomatosis with polyangiitis" [GPA]) and linked various forms of what is currently recognized as pauci-immune small-vessel vasculitis. OBJECTIVE.—: To put the 1954 article by Godman and Churg into context and review current ideas of GPA. DATA SOURCES.—: Published literature. CONCLUSIONS.—: Godman and Churg proposed the name Wegener's granulomatosis and defined the essential features as granulomatous inflammation and necrotizing

Laryngeal Frame Involvement as The First Sign of Wegener's Granulomatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA), also known as Wegener's Granulomatosis, is an ANCA-associated vasculitis that primarily affects small vessels, leading to necrotizing granulomatous reactions in the airways and small vessels. The etiology remains uncertain. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman in her 70s, who was previously tracheostomized at another facility and was presented to our attention with glottic-subglottic stenosis. We performed a lysis of glottic synechia and subglottic debulking via transoral laser microsurgery, yielding satisfactory results over the sho
