Quality of Life With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome/Joint Hypermobility Syndrome: A Systematic Review of Psychosocial Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial interventions may improve QoL in people with wider chronic pain conditions. However, the evidence requires refining for application to EDS/JHMS. This systematic review aimed to identify, assess and synthesise the evidence of the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions concerning EDS/JHMS. EBSCO, OpenGrey, Cochrane, Prospero, Researchgate and BPS Wiley online were searched for papers published approximately 2000-2024 for studies in which (1) Participants diagnosed with EDS/JHMS. (2) Quantitative or mixed methods. (3) Assessed a Psychosocial intervention to a (4) qua

An evaluation of practices and policies used in genetics clinics across the United States to manage referrals for Ehlers-Danlos and hypermobility syndromes.

PURPOSE: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), among other conditions, comprise a collection of heritable disorders of connective tissue. There are recognized challenges in diagnosing JHS/hEDS. Despite a lack of identifiable molecular etiology for these conditions, referrals to medical geneticists for evaluation are commonplace, and they continue to rise. Because of an absence of nationally recognized referral guidelines for JHS/hEDS, health care institutions are left to develop their own policies. The purpose of our study was to characterize these a

Exploring the dynamics of stability and lumbar proprioception in hypermobility syndrome: a comparative and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: HMS is characterized by excessive joint mobility, presenting various physical and psychological challenges. Understanding the interplay between these factors is essential for effective HMS management. This study aimed to examine differences in Limits of Stability (LOS) and lumbar proprioception between Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) and control groups, explore correlations between LOS and proprioception errors, and understand the mediation effects of Kinesiophobia and fatigue on proprioception in HMS individuals. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 72 HMS patients and 72 control

Hyperlaxity in Hand Surgery: A Cross-sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility syndrome comprises a spectrum of disorders associated with increased rates of injury and degeneration in all joints. However, there is a paucity of literature on these patients' features within the hand clinic. In this study, we characterize hyperlaxity patients in the hand clinic setting to help inform evaluation and management. METHODS: All patients who presented to a single surgeon's clinic over a 10-year period with a diagnosis of joint hypermobility were collected. Retrospective review of demographic data, orthopedic history, presenting symptoms, and diagn

Case Report: A complex congenital bilateral multidirectional glenohumeral hyperlaxity with instability: surgical, anatomical, and forensic insights.

Multidirectional instability (MDI) of the shoulder joint involves the looseness of the joint capsule in multiple directions, resulting in difficulties in keeping the head of the humerus centered within the glenoid fossa. There is still considerable debate about the optimal treatment approach, ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention and it is even more challenging for complex or bilateral cases. An 18-year-old male with a rare congenital bilateral multidirectional glenohumeral hyperlaxity and instability is reported. After excluding other medical conditions, the patient wa

Postdural Puncture Headache in a Patient With Thoracic Arachnoid Web With Known Joint Hypermobility: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with connective tissue disorders (CTDs), such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, can present unique challenges in the management of spinal pathology and procedural complications due to underlying tissue fragility and susceptibility to dural ruptures. Thus, there is a need for less invasive diagnostic and therapeutic care in this population. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 48-year-old woman with joint hypermobility who developed acute-on-chronic back pain and radicular symptoms. Imaging revealed an L5-S1 radiculopathy and a thoracic arachnoid cyst. During inpatient rehabilitat

Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA) Positivity and Nuclear Antigen Reactivity in Patients with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome/Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (JHS/hEDS).

Background/Objectives: To compare clinical features of patients with joint hypermobility syndrome/hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (JHS/hEDS) who tested positive or negative for anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA), and to determine antibody titers, staining patterns, and reactivity to common nuclear autoantigens. Methods: ANA results were determined by Hep2 immunofluorescence assay. Reactivity to the most common nuclear autoantigens was measured by the Multiplex assay. Clinical manifestations were compared between three subgroups: total ANA+, ANA+ who did not have evidence of systemic autoimmune i

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Tale of Two Cases Highlighting Rare Subtypes and Diagnostic Considerations.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) comprises a group of rare connective tissue disorders marked by multisystem involvement and considerable clinical variability. This report presents two cases of young individuals with complex medical histories involving joint hypermobility, musculoskeletal deformities, ocular abnormalities, and unexplained cardiovascular symptoms. Both cases were initially misclassified under more common subtypes of EDS. However, comprehensive clinical evaluation and application of updated classification criteria led to a re-evaluation of the initial diagnoses. These cases highligh

Ultrasound assessment of patellar enthesopathy in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome with and without concomitant axial spondyloarthropathy.

AIM: Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. When spondyloarthritis (SpA), an inflammatory arthritis, co-occurs with EDS, overlapping symptoms of joint pain may arise, making diagnosis and management challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate enthesopathic differences in the patellar tendon between patients with EDS and those with co-occurring SpA. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-three participants with EDS and co-occurring SpA (SpA + EDS) and 14 participants with EDS without SpA

Impact of chronic wrist hypermobility on proprioception, strength, and functional performance in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Chronic joint hypermobility has been attributed to repetitive ligamentous microtrauma, benign joint hypermobility syndrome (BJHS), or genetic connective tissue disorders that lead to pain and functional impairment, especially among females. Chronic wrist hypermobility (CWH) prevalence, etiology, and effects on proprioception, strength, and function have yet to be established. PURPOSE: This pilot study aimed to determine the CWH prevalence among adults; its effects on proprioception, strength, and function; and whether these effects are gender based. STUDY DESIGN: This was a quasi

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding in Adolescents with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome/Hypermobile-Type Ehlers-Danlos: A Review.

Heavy menstrual bleeding has a high prevalence and is well documented in adult patients with hypermobile-type Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, but there is limited research surrounding work-up and treatment for the adolescent population. Excessive menstrual blood loss can significantly interfere with emotional and physical quality of life. A provider should acquire a comprehensive medical and menstrual history and focused physical examination, as well as baseline laboratory studies, to determine the presence of anemia or underlying bleeding disorder. Use of a pictorial blood assessment chart may be con

Joint Hypermobility Syndrome and Membrane Proteins: A Comprehensive Review.

Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDSs) constitute a heterogeneous group of connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. Asymptomatic EDSs, joint hypermobility without associated syndromes, EDSs, and hypermobility spectrum disorders are the commonest phenotypes associated with joint hypermobility. Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by extreme flexibility of the joints, along with pain and other symptoms. JHS can be a sign of a more serious underlying genetic condition, such as EDS, which af
