A novel classification of subaxial cervical hemivertebrae and associated surgical management.

OBJECTIVE: To propose and validate a new classification of surgical methods for patients with subaxial cervical hemivertebrae. METHOD: This article reviewed cases diagnosed with subaxial cervical hemivertebrae in our hospital from January 2008 to December 2019. The results of preoperative (initial visit), postoperative and/or final follow-up were assessed using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, Neck Disability Index (NDI) score, spinal balance parameters, and Scoliosis Research Society-22 Questionnaire (SRS-22). We also performed a reliability study to assess this classificati

The effect of lifting load on the kinematic characteristics of lumbar spinous process in vivo.

BACKGROUND: There are limited data on the in vivo natural kinematics of the lumbar spinous process. This paper intends to explore the effect of lifting load on the in vivo movement mode of the lumbar spinous process and its biomechanical changes. METHODS: Ten asymptomatic subjects between the ages of 25 and 39 underwent CT scans of the lumbar spine in the supine position, and 3D models of L3-L5 were constructed. Using a Dual Fluoroscopy Imaging System (DFIS), instantaneous orthogonal fluoroscopic images of each subject's flexion-extension, left-right bending, and left-right rotational movemen

Standard radiographic values for the acetabulum in Japanese adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Most previous reports of normal acetabular radiographic values focused on adults or elderly people. Recent reports have described premature hip osteoarthritis in adolescents not caused by acetabular dysplasia. In addition, there is a certain failure rate of surgical treatment for young patients with borderline acetabular dysplasia. Accurate indices for treatment of adolescent hips are unclear because standard measurement values of the adolescent acetabulum have not been reported. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 552 Japanese adolescents aged 12-18 years who had scolios

Accurate Cobb Angle Estimation on Scoliosis X-Ray Images via Deeply-Coupled Two-Stage Network With Differentiable Cropping and Random Perturbation.

Automated Cobb angle estimation on X-ray images is crucial to scoliosis diagnosis. The existing efforts are typically two extremes, which either laboriously detect the raw vertebral landmarks or directly regress Cobb angles from the entire image. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage end-to-end method as a balanced solution, to avoid vulnerability to false landmarks, and to preserve flexibility in clinical usages. Concretely, we cascade two stages sequentially for detecting vertebrae and then regressing their bending directions instead of raw landmarks. In the detection stage, we combine

The Accuracy and Safety of a Pedicle Screw Using the Freehand Technique in Minimally Invasive Scoliosis Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The safety and clinical usefulness of minimally invasive scoliosis surgery (MISS) has been reported in various studies. However, freehand pedicle screwing in MISS remains technically challenging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy and safety of pedicle screw placement using the freehand technique in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients treated with MISS compared to conventional open scoliosis surgery (COSS). METHODS: We included 76 patients who underwent deformity correction for AIS. Computed tomography scans were used to assess screw violations divided

Retrospective Analysis of Associated Anomalies in 636 Patients with Operatively Treated Congenital Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital scoliosis is frequently associated with anomalies in multiple organ systems. However, the prevalence and distribution of associated anomalies remain unclear, and there is a large amount of variation in data among different studies. METHODS: Six hundred and thirty-six Chinese patients who had undergone scoliosis correction surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2012 to July 2019 were recruited, as a part of the Deciphering disorders Involving Scoliosis and COmorbidities (DISCO) study. The medical data for each subject were collected and analyzed.

Two Cases of Myofibrillar Myopathies: Genetic and Quality of Life Study.

We describe two cases of myofibrillar myopathies, due to different gene mutations. The first was a girl with cardiomyopathy and sensory axonal neuropathy that underwent cardiac transplantation at 15 years and suffers from rotatory scoliosis due to BAG3 mutation. The second is a male patient, with evident limb-girdle weakness since age 3. Two muscle biopsies were performed at ages 3 and 15, with muscle MRI, and LDB3 gene sequence analysis also carried out. Muscle biopsies revealed the presence of dystrophic changes in the first biopsy and myopathic abnormalities in the second, and the MRI image

Overloaded axial stress activates the Wnt/β-Catenin pathway in nucleus pulposus cells of adult degenerative scoliosis combined with intervertebral disc degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the initiating factor of adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS), and ADS further accelerates IVDD, creating a vicious cycle. Nevertheless, the role of the Wnt/β-Catenin pathway in ADS combined with IVDD (ADS-IVDD) remains a mystery. Accordingly, this study was proposed to investigate the effect of axial stress on the Wnt/β-Catenin pathway in nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) isolated from DS-IVDD patients. METHODS: Normal NPCs (N-NPC) were purchased and the NPCs of young (25-30 years; Y-NPC) and old (65-70 years; O-NPC) from ADS-IVDD patients wer

Back pain in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: A comprehensive review.

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity that affects millions of children worldwide. A variety of treatment algorithms exist for patients based on radiographic parameters such as the Cobb angle and the Risser stage. However, there has been a growing focus on nonradiographic outcomes such as back pain, which can cause functional disability and reduced quality of life for patients. In spite of this, back pain in AIS is poorly characterized in the literature. We aimed to summarize various factors that may influence back pain in AIS and the impact of different t

Distal foundation augmentation enhances the "Bridge" role of single traditional growing rods in the treatment of severe early-onset scoliosis: a retrospective comparative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dual traditional growing rod (dTGR) implantation may not always be feasible for patients with severe early-onset scoliosis (EOS). The concave single traditional growing rod (sTGR) can serve as a starting construct. Distal foundation augmentation (DFA) with four pedicle screws with a cross-link can increase the spinal control provided by a dTGR. However, DFA has yet to be used with a sTGR. This study investigated the efficiency of DFA in patients with severe EOS who underwent sTGR implantation. METHODS: From 2010 to 2021, 74 consecutive patients with severe EOS (major curve ≥80°) w

Effects of Nitrate and Conductivity on Embryo-Larval Fathead Minnows.

Nitrate concentrations have been rising in surface waters over the last century and now frequently exceed drinking water standards and environmental safety benchmarks globally. Health-wise, these trends are concerning because nitrate has been shown to disrupt endocrine function and developmental outcomes. The present study investigated potential sublethal effects of nitrate on developing fathead minnows. Fish were exposed from fertilization through 21 days postfertilization (dpf) to environmentally relevant concentrations of nitrate (0, 2, 5, 10, 25, or 100 mg/L NO3 -N as NaNO3 ). Nitrate effe
