PURPOSE: Postoperative outcomes following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) are traditionally assessed using complications or long-term patient-reported outcomes (PROMs). However, determinants of immediate postoperative recovery and in-hospital resource utilization remain less well defined. This is particularly relevant with the increasing adoption of outpatient ACDF pathways, where accurate preoperative risk stratification is critical. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether preoperative PROMs are associated with postoperative care intensity following ACDF, in additio

BACKGROUND Osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) are correlated with thoracolumbar sagittal imbalance associated with paravertebral muscles (PVM) atrophy and fatty infiltration (FI). This study investigated PVM degeneration and its correlation with spinopelvic parameters in patients with OVCFs. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective case-control study enrolled 50 patients with OVCFs and 50 controls with lumbar degeneration, frequency-matched for age (±5 years). Complete sex matching was not achieved. Primary comparisons were adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and lumbar bone mineral d

UNLABELLED: Spondylolysis is a common cause of mechanical low back pain in adolescent athletes. While nonoperative management is frequently successful, a subset of patients fail conservative treatment and require surgical intervention. Direct repair of the pars defect offers a motion-preserving alternative to fusion in appropriately selected patients, but traditional open and fluoroscopy-guided minimally invasive techniques are limited by soft-tissue morbidity and variability in screw placement accuracy, and detailed technical descriptions of navigation-assisted approaches remain limited in th

INTRODUCTION: Congenital limb deficiency is an uncommon musculoskeletal anomaly that may occur as an isolated defect or as part of a syndrome. It can present as transverse or longitudinal deficiency and may involve one or multiple limbs.
CASE REPORT: A 1-year-old male child was brought to the outpatient department with congenital deficiencies involving both upper and lower limbs. He was the third child of non-consanguineous parents, born at full term by normal vaginal delivery with assistance from a local birth attendant. Antenatal care was inadequate, with only two antenatal visits and one u

BACKGROUND: Telomere length (TL) is a marker of cumulative biological aging, but whether it causally contributes to degenerative spine disease or reflects upstream metabolic and inflammatory burden remains unclear.
METHODS: We performed a population-based study integrating two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) with longitudinal UK Biobank analyses. MR used genetic instruments for leukocyte TL, body mass index (BMI), and C-reactive protein (CRP) against five degenerative spine GWAS outcomes. We estimated direct TL effects after adjustment for BMI and CRP. Observational analyses included 265,

INTRODUCTION: Decreased pulmonary function in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) indicates restricted and obstructive ventilatory dysfunction. However, few studies have investigated obstructive ventilatory dysfunction, and the association between postoperative residual spinal and thoracic deformities and bronchial obstruction remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify postoperative bronchial narrowing and investigate its association with residual spinal and thoracic deformities and pulmonary function in patients with AIS.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 56

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion requires a graft between the affected vertebrae to facilitate new bone ingrowth and subsequent fusion. While the gold standard for bone grafting remains the iliac crest autograft and local autograft, several different bone graft substitutes have been investigated. b.Bone is a EU class III Medical Device. b.Bone is a biomorphic calcium phosphate scaffold characterized by a hierarchical interconnected porous architecture designed to mimic the structural organization of trabecular bone. BACKGROUND: For some patients with cervical dystonia (CD), botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections last less than 12 weeks.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if a novel, accelerated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocol is a safe and feasible adjunctive treatment with BoNT for CD.
METHODS: Patients with CD reporting BoNT benefit lasting ≤9 weeks were enrolled in a randomized double-blind, sham-controlled, crossover study. The Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS), mood, cognitive, and gait measures were collected before, after, and 2-weeks following rTMS/SHAM.

UNLABELLED: Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) can progress silently during growth. Early primary care detection prevents curve progression and reduces treatment burden. This study aimed to assess the role of family physicians in screening, diagnosis, counseling, and follow-up of adolescents with IS, and to evaluate primary care attributes using the Primary Care Assessment Survey (PCAS). This cross-sectional study included 150 patients with IS followed at a university orthopedics clinic in Türkiye. Data were collected via structured telephone interviews using a custom 13-item questionnaire and the vali

Surgical site infection (SSI) after spinal instrumentation surgery remains a challenging complication, particularly in patients with a history of radiotherapy. Radiation-associated skin and soft tissue injuries cause long-lasting impairment of vascularity and regenerative capacity, significantly compromising wound healing and infection control. When SSI occurs in radiation-affected tissue, wound closure becomes difficult, requiring complex reconstructive surgery. A 73-year-old man who had previously received radiotherapy to the lumbar region for malignant lymphoma at the age of 37 (in 1989) de

BACKGROUND: Reduced lumbar lordosis has been observed in patients with low back pain, but lumbar straightening has not been well characterized in fibromyalgia. We hypothesized that fibromyalgia would be associated with reduced lumbar curvature on standing radiographs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate lumbar lordosis, quantified by the L1-L5 Cobb angle, in patients with fibromyalgia compared with patients with other rheumatic diseases and low back pain.
DESIGN: Retrospective, cross-sectional observational study.
SETTING: Rheumatology office practice.
PARTICIPANTS: A consecutive series of 245 patients

To our knowledge, we report the first combined homozygous deletion of ALCAM and CBLB at 3q13.11-q13.12. The patient, a 14-year-old boy born to consanguineous parents, had a multisystem phenotype with severe congenital ocular and craniofacial anomalies, early-onset osteoporosis, progressive scoliosis, growth failure, congenital heart defect, humoral immunodeficiency, and chronic inflammatory findings. SNP array identified a 2.5-Mb homozygous deletion spanning ALCAM and CBLB, and expression studies confirmed complete absence of ALCAM and CBLB expression. Whole-exome sequencing did not identify a

Spinal deformity surgery is associated with substantial blood loss and high transfusion requirements, exposing patients to the risks of allogeneic blood transfusion. Intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) is widely used in patient blood management strategies, yet its clinical efficacy and safety in spinal deformity surgery, particularly in the context of contemporary antifibrinolysis and restrictive transfusion parameters, remain uncertain. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies comparing spinal deformity surgery performed with versus without ICS. PubMed, Embase

BACKGROUND DATA: Pediatric patients undergoing surgery for secondary scoliosis are at special risk for surgical site infections (SSIs). The application of dexamethasone (Dexa) for perioperative prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting is an established method. Despite the benefits, there is still concern regarding an increased risk for SSI.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between perioperative Dexa administration for PONV prophylaxis and the occurrence of SSI requiring surgical revision in pediatric patients undergoing surgery for secondary scoliosis.

➢ Standing full-spine radiographs are mandatory for cervical deformity evaluation; key alignment targets include cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) of ≤40 mm, T1 slope minus cervical lordosis (T1S - CL) of <15°, and a chin-brow vertical angle (CBVA) between -10° and +10° relative to the true vertical. The achievement of these thresholds is independently associated with better patient-reported outcomes, whereas values outside these ranges are associated with worse disability and quality-of-life scores.➢ The Kim-International Spine Study Group (ISSG) morphology-based classification, which id

➢ Cervical sagittal alignment is associated with patient-reported outcomes, with higher T1 slope-cervical lordosis mismatch and greater C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis correlating with greater disability and worse health-related quality of life.➢ Cervical alignment must be interpreted alongside global sagittal balance, as cervical posture interacts with thoracic and spinopelvic alignment and compensatory mechanisms.➢ Both anterior and posterior cervical fusion can influence sagittal alignment, but optimal outcomes depend on alignment-conscious planning tailored to deformity morphology and spinal
