Medical image analysis for three-dimensional reconstruction in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: Imaging inputs, reconstruction methods, validation evidence, and research gaps.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex three-dimensional (3D) spinal deformity. Although standing full-spine radiography remains the cornerstone of clinical diagnosis and longitudinal follow-up, two-dimensional projections cannot fully characterize vertebral rotation, local osseous geometry, or global spatial alignment. In recent years, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), conventional radiography, EOS/biplanar radiography, 3D ultrasound, and surface imaging have increasingly been integrated with deep learning, statistical shape modeling, and generative appro

HAMA microneedles patch loaded with muscle-targeting engineered apoptotic vesicles and attenuating sarcopenia by regulating mitochondrial homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is an age-related disorder characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, primarily driven by mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and impaired satellite cell activity. Conventional therapeutic strategies have shown limited efficacy in restoring muscle performance. Apoptotic vesicles (ApoVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently emerged as promising therapeutic agents capable of delivering bioactive cargos to regulate cellular metabolism and attenuate tissue aging. However, the targeted delivery and functional stabi

Heterotopic Cutaneous Adnexa Arising from the Ascending Colon Presenting as a Chronic Abdominal Wall Sinus: A Rare Congenital Anomaly and Diagnostic Challenge.

A chronic abdominal wall sinus tract caused by heterotopic cutaneous adnexa arising from the colonic serosa is extremely rare and readily misdiagnosed. We report a 39-year-old woman with congenital scoliosis and a 30-year history of intermittent, odorless, non-feculent discharge from a cutaneous opening in the right lower abdominal wall; she had no prior abdominal surgery. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a non-enhancing sinus tract extending from the ascending colon toward the abdominal wall, whereas colonoscopy showed normal colonic mucosa with no fistulous communication.

Osteopenia in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common type of scoliosis, which occurs in 10 to 18-year-old adolescents and is often accompanied by osteopenia, but the etiology of osteopenia is still unknown. Exploring the etiology may play an important role in fully understanding the pathogenesis of AIS and drawing new treatment ideas. PURPOSE: Understanding the etiology of osteopenia in AIS. METHODS: This article conducted a comprehensive search across PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), and CNKI for literature concerning osteopenia in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The primary search s

Effects of bracing on pulmonary function in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND CONTENT: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of 3-dimensional pediatric spinal deformity, characterized by abnormal lateral displacement and rotation. Full-time rigid bracing is often prescribed to prevent curve progression during skeletal growth. Directed force is applied to the apex via the rib cage to achieve satisfactory in-brace correction. The short- and long-term effects of bracing on the pulmonary function remain unclear. PURPOSE: To study the effects of bracing on the pulmonary function of AIS patients. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review

Immediate in-brace correction and 1-year radiographic stability after a hybrid textile brace for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: The Spinamic® brace (VNTC, Seoul, Republic of Korea) is a hybrid spinal orthosis designed to prevent curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Given that AIS often involves both structural deformity and flexibility-dependent components, evaluating brace effects requires assessing curve flexibility in addition to Cobb angle magnitude. This study examined the immediate in-brace correction and its long-term follow-up outcomes. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from participants aged 9-17 years, diagnosed with AIS. Pre-brace standing and supine radiographs

Patient-Derived iPSC Modeling Reveals Dysregulation of the Mucin-Type O-Glycan Biosynthesis-Related Transcriptional Program in TBX6-Associated Congenital Scoliosis.

TBX6-associated congenital scoliosis (TACS) is a genetic subtype of congenital scoliosis caused by reduced TBX6 gene dosage, most commonly through compound inheritance of a rare loss-of-function allele and a hypomorphic T-C-A haplotype. However, the mechanisms linking TBX6 dysfunction to impaired human skeletal development remain unclear. Here, we established a patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) model of TACS and recapitulated key stages of axial skeletal development through stepwise differentiation into paraxial mesoderm, nascent somites, sclerotome, and subsequently osteoge

Impact of Age at Surgery on Perioperative Outcomes After Posterior Spinal Fusion for Neuromuscular Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: While surgical outcomes for posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for pediatric patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) have been well described, less is known about how perioperative outcomes differ when surgery is performed later, during young adulthood. The purpose of this study was to compare perioperative outcomes between adolescents and young adults undergoing PSF for NMS using a large, multi-institutional clinical registry. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and NSQIP-Pediatric databases from 2016

Thoracoscopic Management of Recurrent Pneumothorax in an Adult Patient with Cri du Chat Syndrome and Severe Scoliosis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Cri du chat syndrome (CdCS) is a rare genetic disorder that can be associated with scoliosis and marked thoracic deformity. Although scoliosis has been reported to be associated with an increased incidence of pneumothorax, reports of pneumothorax surgery in patients with severe scoliosis associated with CdCS are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of recurrent pneumothorax in an adult patient with CdCS associated with severe scoliosis who was successfully treated by thoracoscopic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 41-year-old man with CdCS presented with severe scoliosis, intell

Initial screening positivity for suspected scoliosis and machine learning-assisted risk prioritization: a school-based cross-sectional study in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, China.

BACKGROUND: Questionnaire-based prescreening is inexpensive, but its ability to identify students with abnormal scoliosis screening findings is uncertain. We assessed whether questionnaire variables improved prediction beyond a demographic and anthropometric baseline and whether simple on-site physical signs could further improve risk prioritization. The outcome was initial screening positivity, defined by a positive Adams forward-bend test together with an angle of trunk rotation (ATR) of ≥5°. METHODS: This school-based cross-sectional study included 3,559 students aged 10-18 years from four
