The impact of seasonal cattle grazing on ungulate spatiotemporal behavior in a multiuse recreational area in central Alberta.

As grazing lands expand it is important to understand the effect cattle (Bos taurus) may have on native ungulates. Cattle presence in a landscape can cause both spatial and temporal partitioning in wild ungulates. We used remote cameras to investigate the impacts of seasonal rest-rotational cattle grazing on both the temporal and spatial behaviors of moose (Alces alces), elk (Cervus canadensis), mule deer (Odocoileus hemonius), and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Park near Edmonton, AB, Canada. We found that all wild ungulates decrease their inte

Mild behavioral impairment in people with mild cognitive impairment: Are the two conditions related?

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild behavioral impairment (MBI) are both considered potential prodromal stages of dementia, especially Alzheimer's disease. Previous literature has lacked specific information about MBI in individuals with MCI and associations of several aspects of both, MBI and MCI. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate whether associations exist between aspects of MBI and aspects of cognitive performance in certain dimensions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). METHODS: We used baseline data from the double-blind randomized controlled intervention M

Study of the Prevalence of Atypical Scheuermann's Kyphosis Using Computed Tomography Scans.

Objective  The aim of the present study was to detect atypical Scheuermann's disease through computed tomography scans and estimate its prevalence. Methods  This cross-sectional observational study involved 1,287 computed tomography scans from patients aged 18 to 40 years of both genders. The criteria for diagnosing atypical Scheuermann's disease included wedging of 5° in 3 consecutive vertebrae, combined with a total Cobb angle of 10° or more within the thoracolumbar interval from T8 to L2. Positive cases were assessed for kyphosis severity, presence of Schmorl's nodes, and scoliosis. Prevale

Intraoperative Hyperspectral Imaging Predicts Early Allograft Dysfunction and Overall Survival in Liver Transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the novel application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for in vivo allograft perfusion assessment during liver transplantation (LT) and its potential value for predicting early allograft dysfunction (EAD), graft, and overall survival (OS). BACKGROUND: LT is a well-established therapy for acute and chronic liver diseases, with excellent outcomes. However, a significant proportion of recipients experience EAD, which affects graft and OS. EAD is associated with ischemia-reperfusion injury. HSI is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides information on tissue char

Degenerative disease of the spine: How to relate clinical symptoms to radiological findings.

Degenerative disease of the spine (DDS) is one of the most common pathological conditions in humans. The clinical presentation of DDS is highly variable, ranging from mild pain to severe neurological symptoms. When more severe clinical symptoms are present, it is necessary to use imaging methods, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to confirm the diagnosis and establish the extent of the disease in order to determine proper treatment. There are several MRI changes which, based on clinicoradiological studies, are believed to be potential sources of pain and other clinical symptoms in DDS,

A Novel Surgical Indication for Scheuermann's Kyphosis.

Scheuermann kyphosis can be treated surgically to restore proper sagittal alignment. Thoracic curves >70° are typically indicated for surgical intervention. However, patients who have reached their natural limit of compensatory lumbar hyperlordosis are at risk of accelerated degeneration. This can be determined by comparing lumbar lordosis on standing neutral radiographs and supine extension radiographs. Minimal additional lordosis in extension compared with neutral, abutment of the spinous processes, or greater lumbar lordosis standing than with attempted extension suggest the patient is maxi

Closure of the neuro-central synchondrosis and other physes in foal cervical spines.

BACKGROUND: The neuro-central synchondrosis (NCS) is a physis responsible for the growth of the dorsal third of the vertebral body and neural arches. When the NCS of pigs is tethered to model scoliosis, stenosis also ensues. It is necessary to describe the NCS for future evaluation of its potential role in equine spinal cord compression and ataxia (wobbler syndrome). OBJECTIVES: To describe the NCS, including when it and other physes closed in computed tomographic (CT) scans of the cervical spine of foals, due to its potential role in vertebral stenosis. STUDY DESIGN: Post-mortem cohort stud

Flexible posterior vertebral tethering for the management of Scheuermann's kyphosis: correction by using growth modulation-clinical and radiographic outcomes of the first 10 patients with at least 3 years of follow-up.

PURPOSE: The present prospective cohort study was intended to present the minimum 3 years' results of flexible posterior vertebral tethering (PVT) applied to 10 skeletally immature patients with SK to question, if it could be an alternative to fusion. METHODS: Ten skeletally immature patients with radiographically confirmed SK, who had flexible (minimum 35%) kyphotic curves (T2-T12), were included. A decision to proceed with PVT was based on curve progression within the brace, and/or persistent pain, and/or unacceptable cosmetic concerns of the patient/caregivers, and/or non-compliance within

Hypermobility Among Adolescents and the Association With Spinal Deformities: A Large Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis are common spinal deformities (SD) among adolescents. The potential link between hypermobility and SD is a topic of debate. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypermobility and its association with SD. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of records of 17-year-old subjects who were recruited into mandatory military service was conducted. Study population comprised 1,220,073 subjects. Prevalence rates were calculated for hypermobility and different categories of SD by severity, studying the strength of the association

[Efficacy of manual correction of cervical spine osteochondrosis in the treatment of arterial hypertension syndrome and prediabetes].

UNLABELLED: Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus, debuting as arterial hypertension (AH) syndrome and prediabetes, are common types of chronic non-communicable processes, that are the leading cause of death in the world. The main treatment method for above mentioned disorders, according to the current guidelines, is pharmacotherapy. However, it is possible to effectively apply non-pharmacological correction methods, aimed at the probable etiological factor and inversive mechanism involved in AH maintenance, in the early stages when no permanent changes are maintaining a high level of

Validation of a new method for the radiological measurement of rod curvature in patients with spine deformity.

PURPOSE: The relationship between rod curvature and postoperative radiographic results is a debated topic. One of the reasons of the heterogeneity of the observed results might reside in the lack of a validated and widely employed method to measure the curvature of the rods. Aim of this study was to present and validate a novel method for rod measurement, which is based on routine X-rays and utilizes a regression algorithm that limits manual measurements and the related errors. METHODS: Data from 20 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis/Scheuermann kyphosis (AIS/SK) patients and 35 adult spine defo

Bipolar hybrid posterior instrumentation tecnique for the correction of Scheuermann's kyphosis.

Scheuermann´s kyphosis (SK) is the most common cause of painful and progressive structural hyperkyphosis in adolescents. Surgical treatment should be considered in cases of refractory pain or progressive deformities. We present the clinical and radiological results obtained using a bipolar, hybrid posterior instrumentation tecnique. We analysed 12 males and 6 females, with mean age of 15.8 years. Minimum follow-up was 2 years. We used transverse process hooks at the cranial level and polyaxial screws for the remaining levels. We did not instrument the periapical segment. We used the sagittal s

A Dietary Supplement in the Management of Patients with Lumbar Osteochondrosis: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Study.

Various nutritional supplements are available over the counter, yet few have been investigated in randomized controlled trials. The rationale for using the specific mix of nutritional substances including collagen type II, hyaluronic acid, n-acetyl-glucosamine, bamboo extract, L-lysine, and vitamin C is the assumption that combining naturally occurring ingredients of the intervertebral disc would maintain spine function. This double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a nutraceutical supplement mix in the management of lumbar osteochondrosis. Fifty pa
