Bipolar hybrid posterior instrumentation tecnique for the correction of Scheuermann's kyphosis.

Scheuermann´s kyphosis (SK) is the most common cause of painful and progressive structural hyperkyphosis in adolescents. Surgical treatment should be considered in cases of refractory pain or progressive deformities. We present the clinical and radiological results obtained using a bipolar, hybrid posterior instrumentation tecnique. We analysed 12 males and 6 females, with mean age of 15.8 years. Minimum follow-up was 2 years. We used transverse process hooks at the cranial level and polyaxial screws for the remaining levels. We did not instrument the periapical segment. We used the sagittal s

A Dietary Supplement in the Management of Patients with Lumbar Osteochondrosis: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Study.

Various nutritional supplements are available over the counter, yet few have been investigated in randomized controlled trials. The rationale for using the specific mix of nutritional substances including collagen type II, hyaluronic acid, n-acetyl-glucosamine, bamboo extract, L-lysine, and vitamin C is the assumption that combining naturally occurring ingredients of the intervertebral disc would maintain spine function. This double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a nutraceutical supplement mix in the management of lumbar osteochondrosis. Fifty pa

Spinal deformity surgery in Scheuermann's kyphosis versus adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: meta-analysis of complications and clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Surgical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) may be associated with several complications including extended length of stay and unplanned reoperations. Several studies have previously compared postoperative complications and functional outcomes for AIS and SK patients with mixed results. However, a meta-analysis compiling the literature on this topic is lacking. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Cochrane, and Google Scholar (pages 1-20) were accessed and explored until April 2024. The extracted data consisted of compl

The effect of Scheuermann's kyphosis on rib cage morphology: A skeletal study.

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary changes in human rib cage morphology rendered it prone to pathologies like Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). However, the impact of SK on rib cage morphology is unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine differences in rib cage morphology (e.g., ribs and sternum) between SK patients and a control group. METHODS: Measurements of the vertebral body, transverse process angle, sternum, and rib size were taken from the skeletons of SK patients (76) and a control group (96). Statistical tests were carried out to examine differences between the study and control groups and be

[Impact of manual-physical correction method on aerobic metabolism processes in patients with essential arterial hypertension].

UNLABELLED: Essential arterial hypertension (EAH) is a chronic non-communicable disease (CNCD), that develops in parallel with other pathologies of the CNCD group, the presence of which is promoted by hypodynamia with consequent disturbance of aerobic energy supply processes. These disorders include, in particular, degenerative-dystrophic processes of the locomotor system, comprising of the cervical spine. In turn, development of these processes can additionally worsen hemodynamics with disturbance of the oxygen transfer processes. Thus, comprehensive exposure on all the components of EAH path

[The dynamics of 24-hour arterial pressure monitoring with manual and physical exposure to the cervical spine (A. Shishonin method) in patients with essential arterial hypertension].

UNLABELLED: One of the most probable and controversial hypotheses regarding the etiology of essential arterial hypertension, is the increase in arterial pressure due to intracranial ischemia, for various reasons, particularly because of cervical osteochondrosis. The daily arterial blood pressure dynamics is of interest when attempting non-pharmacological induced correction of arterial pressure by manual and physical effects on the cervical spine. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate daily arterial pressure dynamics in patients with essential arterial hypertension who received non-pharmacological treatment

Loss of CSF-contacting neuron sensory function is associated with a hyper-kyphosis of the spine reminiscent of Scheuermann's disease.

Scheuermann's disease, also referred to as Scheuermann's kyphosis, is the second most frequent spine deformity occurring in humans after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), both with an unclear etiology. Recent genetic studies in zebrafish unraveled new mechanisms linked to AIS, highlighting the role of the Reissner fiber, an acellular polymer bathing in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in close proximity with ciliated cells and mechanosensory neurons lining the central canal of the spinal cord (CSF-cNs). However, while the Reissner fiber and ciliary beating have been linked to AIS-like phenot

In old men Scheuermann's disease is not associated with neck or back pain: a Swedish cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Scheuermann's disease is characterized by kyphosis and frequently mild back pain. As the level of kyphosis may progress over time, also the level of pain may increase. We evaluated the prevalence of Scheuermann's disease, and their pain, in Swedish elderly men. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study Sweden (n = 3,014) is a population-based prospective observational study of community-living men aged 69-81 years. At baseline, participants answered a questionnaire including history of neck/back pain during the preceding year and characterist

Distribution Patterns of Degeneration of the Lumbar Spine in a Cohort of 200 Patients with an Indication for Lumbar MRI.

Lower back pain is one of the most common causes of a reduced quality of life. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the best suited imaging technique to detect causes of that pain. We retrospectively evaluated the MRIs of the lumbar spine for 200 patients in order to describe the distribution of signs of degeneration with regard to age, sex, and position of the disc affected. The number of spinal segments affected by degeneration increased with age, as did the number of signs of degeneration per segment. In patients aged between 21 and 30, 38.8% of discs were affected, while for patients aged b

The Hereditary Nature of Adolescent Spinal Deformities: A Study of Over 600,000 Adolescents.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: We designed this study to investigate the risk for spinal deformity among individuals whose parents had a spinal deformity. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) are common adolescent spinal deformities (ASD) with a significant impact on public health. Timely treatment with bracing is effective in halting or slowing the progression of these deformities. However, screening healthy adolescents for spinal deformities remains debatable. While the leading medical organizations endorse contradicto

[Physical rehabilitation for osteochondrosis of the cervical and thoracic spine in elderly and senile people (Stage 2).].

The main and most frequently used means of physical rehabilitation for osteochondrosis of the cervical and thoracic spine is motor rehabilitation. The goals of physical rehabilitation of persons suffering from osteochondrosis are to strengthen the muscles of the back, reduce the load on the intervertebral discs, improve blood circulation, restore a normal motor stereotype and, as a result, reduce pain. The use of means of motor rehabilitation is scientifically substantiated, the mechanisms of their effect on the functional state of the body have been studied, and the effectiveness of their use

Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae alter the distribution of lumbar mobility-Preliminary results of a radiographic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Lumbo-sacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) are one of the most common congenital variances of the spine. They are associated with an increased frequency of degeneration in the cranial adjacent segment. Hypermobility and concomitant increased loads are discussed as a possible reason for segmental degeneration. We therefore examined the lumbar and segmental motion distribution in patients with LSTV with flexion-extension radiographs. METHODS: A retrospective study of 51 patients with osteochondrosis L5/S1 with flexion and extension radiographs was performed. Of these, 17 patients ha

Lumbar Scheuermann's disease found in a patient with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) caused by a heterozygous mutation in COL1A2 (c.4048G > A): a case report.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and a series of extraskeletal manifestations. Approximately 90 % of OI cases are caused by type I collagen variants encoded by the collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) or type I alpha 2 (COL1A2) gene. Lumbar Scheuermann's disease is an atypical type of Scheuermann's disease accompanied by Schmorl's nodes and irregular endplates but without pronounced kyphosis. Although the etiology of Scheuermann's disease is unclear, genetic and environmental factors are likely. CASE P
