Quantitative MRI of dorsal root ganglion alterations in neurofibromatosis type 1 patients with or without pain.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder characterised by skin and nervous system anomalies, primarily involving glial cells and nerve tumours. Pain, particularly chronic pain, is a significant but often overlooked symptom in NF1 patients, affecting their health-related quality of life. The dorsal root ganglion (DRG) is essential for pain signal transmission, yet in vivo studies of DRG in NF1 patients are lacking. METHODS: This prospective study included 20 NF1 patients (8 with neuropathic pain) and 28 healthy controls. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of lumbosa

Novel Intradural Endoscopic Lumbosacral Ventral-Dorsal Rhizotomy: A Technical Note With Operative Video.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Movement disorders in children, particularly medically refractory hypertonia caused by cerebral palsy, often require surgical intervention. Lumbosacral ventral-dorsal rhizotomy (VDR), which includes sectioning both ventral and dorsal nerve roots, is a viable treatment for dyskinesias like dystonia. However, severe scoliotic spinal rotation can make traditional open rhizotomy and other minimal access approaches technically impractical. We report the first endoscopic VDR, offering a minimal access and non-destabilizing alternative for patients with severe spinal rotati

Orthopedic manifestations of ataxia telangiectasia in children.

Ataxia telangiectasia AT), an autosomal recessive disorder due to mutations in the ATM gene, results in progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculocutaneous telangiectasia, immunodeficiency, pulmonary compromise, sensitivity to ionizing radiation, and increased risk of hematologic malignancies. Orthopedic manifestations such as scoliosis, hip displacement, gait abnormalities, and extremity contractures are common, but reports are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate and summarize the orthopedic manifestations associated with AT. A retrospective review was conducted of patients with AT. Reported outco

Transcriptome profiling suggests molecular sexual dimorphism in lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and sex-specific mechanisms underlying visceral pain.

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are essential for transmitting sensory information from visceral organs to the central nervous system. Sensory neuronal hyperactivity and glial reactivity have been reported in DRG in animal models of chronic pain, yet the molecular mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of visceral pain remain unclear. In this study, we performed transcriptome profiling of lumbosacral DRG in a mouse model of chronic pelvic pain, focusing on mapping the gene and signaling pathway changes associated with visceral hypersensitivity in lumbosacral DRG transmitting bladder afferent si

The Global Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Parasitic Coinfection in People Living with Viruses: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Coinfection with parasites and viruses can exacerbate disease transmission, outcomes and therapy. This study searched the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and JSTOR databases for publications on the prevalence of parasitic coinfection in people living with viruses from 1 January 2005 to 30 April 2022, and 356 studies were included and systematically reviewed. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the global prevalence of and factors potentially associated with parasitic infection (helminths and protozoa) in virus-infected people, and the infection burden was estimated. A variety of parasites (

Twelfth Rib Length as a Predictor of Anatomic Variations in the Lumbosacral Plexus Associated With Atypical Radiculopathy in Lumbar Disc Herniation.

STUDY DESIGN: A combined clinical and cadaveric observational study. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether anatomic variations in the lumbosacral plexus (LSP) are associated with diagnostic discrepancies in lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and to corroborate clinical findings with anatomic evidence. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: LDH is typically diagnosed based on clinical neurological symptoms and the level of the compressed spinal nerve root (the responsible lesion) identified by magnetic resonance imaging. However, in some patients, radiculopathy symptoms do not always align with the responsible l

Neuroimaging in Leprosy: A Case Series Exploring Domains Beyond Peripheral Nerves.

Background and objective Leprosy, an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, induces irreversible damage, necessitating early detection. The disease's neurotropism, which extends to the peripheral nerves, is well recognized. In recent years, there has been an acknowledgment of its expanding horizon beyond this traditional boundary. This study aims to explore the involvement of atypical sites such as the central nervous system, brachial plexus, and spinal nerve root ganglion through dedicated neuroimaging via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) across diverse spectra of leprosy. Methods

Misdiagnosis of supraclavicular brachial plexus metastasis as cervical disc herniation: A lung cancer case report.

Cervical radiculopathy, with an incidence of approximately 85 per 100,000 individuals annually, is characterized by pain originating from cervical nerve root disruption. Accurate diagnosis is challenging because of the absence of a universally accepted gold standard, necessitating reliance on patient history, clinical examination, and diagnostic tests. Brachial plexus metastasis is a rare but clinically significant condition that can mimic common musculoskeletal disorders, such as cervical radiculopathy. Its nonspecific presentation often results in delayed diagnosis, particularly in patients

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the toxic effects of Clothianidin on the embryonic development of zebrafish.

Clothianidin (CLO) is a neonicotinoid insecticide containing a nitro active group and a chlorinated thiazole heterocycle. It is classified as a second generation thianicotin compound. It is recognized for its augmented stability and broad spectrum of biological toxicity. Numerous studies have shown that CLO exerts toxic effects on the nervous, immunal, reproductive, cardiovascular and multiple organ systems. These effects have been shown to result in mucous membrane and skin damage. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations of CLO to observe morphological develo

Rare case of a massive anterior mediastinal schwannoma causing cardiac compression with concurrent cervical spine lesion causing spinal cord compression.

Schwannoma is the most common neurogenic tumor in the posterior mediastinum, however it is rarely found in the anterior mediastinum (Mediastinum 4, 2020; Radiat Med 13(4):175-7). We report a large anterior mediastinal schwannoma causing cardiac compression along with a concurrent cervical spine lesion causing right-sided weakness. Current literature having only a few case reports describing an anterior location for this neoplasm and even rarer to have a concurrent symptomatic cervical lesion. We present this case to highlight this rare finding and increase awareness of this potential diagnosis

The relationship between OPLL and metabolic disorders.

Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a degenerative disease characterized by progressive ectopic bone formation process, which can lead to severe neurological impairments and reduced quality of life. While the etiology of OPLL is generally considered multifactorial, there is no consensus regarding these contributing factors including genetic, endocrine, biomechanical, immune and lifestyle factors. Through accumulating evidence from multidisciplinary investigations, the pathophysiological connection between OPLL and endocrine-metabolic dysregulation is becoming increasi

Whole body distribution of the regulatory peptide 26RFa in male and female mice.

26RFa is a regulatory peptide initially isolated from the brain. 26RFa was found to be involved in the regulation of vital functions such as the regulation of energy and glucose metabolism. However, the whole distribution of 26RFa in the organs/tissues of the organism remains fragmentary although it represents a crucial step to discover novel physiological functions for this regulatory peptide. To this aim, we have generated a mouse line that expresses the fluorescent protein tdTomato in 26RFa-expressing cells, and visualization of tdTomato immunostaining in toto was performed using the tridim
