INTRODUCTION: A Giant Cell Tumor (GCT) of the bone is a locally osteolytic tumor made up of mononuclear ovoid stromal cells and multinucleated giant cells. It commonly affects long bones like the distal femur and proximal tibia, but can also develop in the cervical spine during the third and fourth decades of life.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 20-year-old female presented to the clinic with a complaint of neck pain persisting for one month. Clinical examination revealed bilateral radiculopathy in the upper limb, which was also associated with pain in the left shoulder and elbow. Imaging revealed a

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation is considered the third circulation of the human body. Recently, some scholars have proposed the myodural bridge (MDB) as a novel power source for CSF flow. Moreover, the suboccipital muscles can exert a driving force on the CSF via the MDB. This hypothesis is directly supported by head rotation and nodding movements, which can affect CSF circulation. The MDB has been validated as a normal structure in humans and mammals. In addition, the fusion of MDB fibers of different origins that act in concert with each other forms the MDB complex (MDBC). The MDBC ma

The presence of significant, unwarranted variation in treatment suggests that clinical decision making also depends on where patients live instead of what they need and prefer. Historically, high practice variation in surgical treatment for lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDDD) has been documented. This study aimed to investigate current regional variation in surgical treatment for sciatica resulting from LDDD. We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of all Dutch adults (>18 years) between 2016 and 2019. Demographic data from Statistics Netherlands were merged with a nationwid

PURPOSE: Three-level hybrid surgery (HS) consisting of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been partly used for the treatment of multi-level cervical degenerative disc disease (CDDD). The complications related to the implants and the collapse of the surgical vertebral bodies had been reported in multi-level anterior cervical spine surgery. Thus, this study aimed to explore the biomechanical effects on the prostheses and vertebrae in three-level HS.
METHODS: A FE model of cervical spine (C0-T1) was constructed. Five surgical models were devel

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical treatment for symptomatic cervical degenerative disc disease is anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), yet the increased risk of adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) requiring additional surgery exists and may result in limiting long-term surgical success when it occurs. Disc arthroplasty can preserve or restore physiologic range of motion (ROM), decreasing adjacent level stress and subsequent surgery. For patients with multilevel pathology requiring at least a 1-level fusion, interest is growing in anterior cervical hybrid (ACH) surgery as a partial mo

OBJECTIVE: When implanting the Zero-P device, the screws of Zero-P form a bone wedge with a 40 ± 5° cranial and caudal angle (CCA). However, no study has been performed in the optimal CCA of the Zero-P implant. To investigate whether the cranial/caudal angles (CCA) of the screws affect the clinical and radiological outcomes in patients undergoing ACDF with the Zero-P implant.
METHODS: From January 2016 to December 2023, we retrospectively analyzed 186 patients who underwent 1-level ACDF with the Zero-P device. The patients were divided into four groups: group A (cranial angle ≤40°, caudal ang

A 64-year-old patient with stage IV non-small-cell lung carcinoma and several comorbidities, which include obesity and long-term smoking, was treated with N-allyl noroxymorphone eluting osteoinductive bone graft biomaterial. The patient had multilevel degenerative disk disease (DDD), which has a high rate of failure when osteoinductive bone grafts are not used. Infuse, the most widely administered osteoinductive bone graft, is contraindicated in the spine for patients with active tumor. As such, a novel drug eluting osteoinductive biomaterial was administered to this patient, for whom no other

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest sedentary behavior is a risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders. This study aimed to investigate the potential causal association between leisure sedentary behavior (LSB) (including television (TV) viewing, computer use, and driving) and the incidence of sciatica, intervertebral disk degeneration (IVDD), low back pain (LBP), and cervical spondylosis (CS).
METHODS: We obtained the data of LSB, CS, IVDD, LBP, sciatica and proposed mediators from the gene-wide association studies (GWAS). The causal effects were examined by Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW) test,

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Hybrid surgery (HS), which involves both anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and cervical disc replacement (ACDR), is increasingly used to treat multilevel cervical disc degenerative disease, yielding satisfactory clinical outcomes. Early fusion is critical after anterior cervical fusion surgeries, but there are no studies comparing the rate of early fusion of HS with that of ACDF.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of early fusion (3-6 months postoperatively) of two-level HS with that of two-level ACDF surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: The fusion

BACKGROUND: Vertebral fractures in young populations are associated with intervertebral disc disorders later in life. However, damage to the annulus fibrosus has been observed in rapidly loaded spines even without the subsequent occurrence of a fracture. Therefore, it may not be the fracture event that compromises the disc, but rather the manner in which the disc is loaded. The purpose of this study was to quantify the mechanical properties of the annulus fibrosus following quasi-static compressive loading of the motion segment either to sub-fracture or fracture-inducing magnitude.
METHODS: P

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although pseudoangina is most commonly caused by cervical disc herniation, several cases have been described where thoracic herniation produced symptoms of pseudoangina. If thoracic herniation can produce angina-like pain, then it is important to consider whether pathology of the thoracolumbar spine, in general, can trigger false pain syndromes distinct from pseudoangina.
OBJECTIVE: We seek to provide the most comprehensive study regarding the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions causing false pain syndromes.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review of the current

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) represent a rare mesenchymal malignancy that can occur anywhere in the body. Due to the low prevalence of the disease, there is a lack of contemporary data regarding patient demographics and cancer-control outcomes.
METHODS: Within the SEER database (2000-2019), we identified 1134 patients diagnosed with malignant SFTs. The distributions of patient demographics and tumor characteristics were tabulated. Cumulative incidence plots and competing risks analyses were used to estimate cancer-specific mortality (CSM) after adjustment for other-ca

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic value of depth of invasion (DOI) in oral squamous cell cancer carcinoma and cutaneous melanoma is well established, while there is a lack of reports investigating the role of DOI in laryngeal cancer. This study aims to explore the association of glottic cancer DOI with other established pathological risk factors and nodal metastasis and evaluate the feasibility of measuring DOI preoperatively using tomographic imaging.
METHODS: The medical records of glottic cancer patients treated between 2015 and 2020 in a single tertiary referral center were screened retrospective

Compression of the spinal cord at the cervical level of the spinal column is the hallmark of the disorder known as cervical myelopathy. The aberrant reflexes, hyperreflexia, pathologic reflexes, clumsiness in the hands and fingers, and disturbance of the gait are caused by this compression. It usually starts slowly, increases gradually, and eventually results in a functional decline. For patients older than 55, the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction is cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). The traditional definition of the pathogenesis of CSM is multilevel spondylosis, where osteoph

Superficial siderosis (SS) is caused by subpial hemosiderin deposition due to chronic low-grade bleeding into the subarachnoid space. Dural tears are the most common etiology. Slowly progressive gait ataxia and hearing impairment are common clinical manifestations. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) shows linear superficial hypointensity on the T2 weighted images and gradient echo. The therapeutic approach is surgical repair of the bleeding source. The patient presented with progressive hearing loss and ataxia. Neurological examination revealed bilateral hearing loss, nystagmus, dysarthria
