INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the pathological formation of bone within soft tissues, most commonly following trauma or surgery. Pelvic HO that causes direct mechanical compression of the urinary bladder is exceptionally rare. We present a case that remained asymptomatic for over a decade before causing significant lower urinary tract symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of dysuria, gross hematuria, and left testicular pain, more than 10 years after a high-energy pelvic fracture. Multimodal imaging revealed an exophytic ossified mass

Myositis ossificans is a rare entity of extra-skeletal bone formation in various soft tissues and muscles, often triggered by trauma or injury. We report a case of myositis ossificans traumatica in a 45-year-old female who presented with pain and a fixed flexion deformity of the elbow. Imaging studies, including X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed a bony mass in the posterior aspect of the right elbow and presence of triceps injury. The patient underwent surgical excision with arthrolysis. To prevent further heterotopic bone formation, excessive massaging or rubbing of the aff

INTRODUCTION: Chronic osteomyelitis is a debilitating bone infection that can lead to significant morbidity and functional impairment. This condition is often challenging to treat due to its complex nature and the ability of bacteria to form biofilms, which make them resistant to antibiotics. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial for successful management. Orthopedic surgeons often encounter chronic osteomyelitis as a difficult and persistent problem. The key to effective treatment lies in prompt diagnosis and a combination of surgical intervention and antimicrobial ther

This case documents a rare occurrence of heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) identified at autopsy, highlighting the long-term sequelae of prior abdominal trauma and expanding awareness of this uncommon entity in forensic pathology. HMO, also called intraabdominal myositis ossificans, is a subset of myositis ossificans traumatica and is characterized by the abnormal formation of osseous, cartilaginous, and sometimes bone marrow elements. It is generally associated with trauma or previous abdominal surgeries and can lead to potential life-threatening complications. Autopsy findings may hi

The post-traumatic formation of myotendinous heterotopic ossification or myositis ossificans traumatica has been an unforeseen complication of muscle contusion-related hematoma in people with hemophilia and von Willebrand's disease. While ultrasound imaging has revolutionized the detection of hemarthrosis and hemarthropathy in bleeding disorders, its clinical use has expanded to the detection of inter- and intramuscular hematomas, as well as the formation of traumatically induced heterotopic ossification. This retrospective multi-center case series includes 29 cases of post-traumatic heterotop

Post-traumatic myositis ossificans of the masseter is an uncommon cause of severe trismus without a standardized management pathway. A 23-year-old man developed progressive jaw stiffness six months after facial trauma, with maximal interincisal opening <10 mm. Imaging demonstrated mature heterotopic ossification bridging the mandibular ramus and zygomatic arch. Excision of the ossified masseter was performed via a combined intraoral and external approach. Trismus recurred within three months, and re-operation through the prior incision removed residual ossification with coronoidectomy. No adju

A woman in her 20s with a past medical history of surgical debulking of a right neck mass presented to the hospital for persistent and worsening right shoulder pain. The shoulder pain was associated with trismus and back and neck pain. A CT scan of the neck with contrast revealed post-surgical changes with increased heterotopic ossification throughout the surgical site extending to the supraclavicular soft tissues and the left sternocleidomastoid muscle, suggesting muscle ossification. A biopsy was performed, and the patient was diagnosed with myositis ossificans (MO). Initial treatment began

Heterotopic ossification is the inappropriate formation of bone in soft tissues of the body. It can manifest spontaneously in rare genetic conditions or as a response to injury, known as acquired heterotopic ossification. There are several experimental models for studying acquired heterotopic ossification from different sources of damage. However, their tenuous mechanistic relevance to the human condition, invasive and laborious nature and/or lack of amenability to chemical and genetic screens, limit their utility. To address these limitations, we developed a simple zebrafish injury model that

Myositis ossificans Traumatica (MOT) is a non-neoplastic, heterotrophic ossifying disease process in muscle and soft tissue rarely involving the craniofacial area. Treatment depends on the extent of ossification and functional limitations. We present the first case of MOT of the temporalis muscle following neurosurgical intervention. This is the case of a 28-year-old male patient who underwent numerous neurosurgical interventions and reported progressive trismus following these interventions. Imaging demonstrated a right temporal region radio-opacity consistent with ossification of the tempora

The authors report a case of myositis ossificans traumatica of the masseter muscles. A 21-year-old man developed masseter myositis after orthognathic surgery to treat facial asymmetry. The myositis may have been triggered by factors such as calcification of a hematoma, periosteum implantation after surgical trauma, and local soft tissue injury. An intraoral incision was made to excise the ectopic bone, resulting in resolution of the patient's symptoms including limited oral opening.

Myositis ossificans traumatica is a rare condition in which causes restriction of mandibular movement. In this entity, temporomandibular joint is depleted of any problems; although all the patients have the history of trauma to the mandible and the face. Myositis ossificans traumatica can involve other parts of the body like femoral region with higher incidence in compare to the maxillofacial area. Blunt trauma to the head and neck causes muscle contusion injury, hematoma formation in the injured muscles or nearby soft tissues. Calcification of hematoma and heterotopic bone formation in the mu

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a self-limiting and self-resolving pathology. In most cases, conservative treatment is chosen as the first step. Surgical treatment is reserved for cases of failure of conservative treatment with persistence of pain and mass. The case presented concerns an 18-year-old soccer player suffering from bilateral adductor longus (AL) MOT results following two different sports injuries. The patient reports the appearance of swelling and palpable mass at the proximal and medial region of the thigh, about 2 cm from the pubic symphysis, along the course of the addu

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a focal reactive ossification of muscle that typically occurs secondary to a single acute high-impact trauma or multiple chronic low-grade traumas. The disease is often limited to a single muscle and can occur throughout the body. Ossification of the muscles in the head and neck region is extremely rare but can occur after falls, motor vehicle accidents, blunt force trauma, or surgical procedures such as extractions and local infiltration. The purpose of this paper is to present the case of a seven-year-old girl with trismus and calcification within her

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a common form of heterotopic ossification associated to trauma. Rare mature manifestations and topographically atypical presentations of MOT are often misdiagnosed as osteosarcoma. This case study discusses a rare, mature case of MOT of the piriformis muscle, potentially clinically associated with piriformis syndrome. The ossification was observed on a dry sacral bone of an adult skeleton belonging to a South African male during routine inventory of the Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons, the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. The

OBJECTIVES: Heterotopic bone formation within a muscle is designated as 'myositis ossificans', and it is associated with multiple aetiologies, such as trauma, genetic predisposition, post-infection, or undetermined causes. When the disease develops as a result of a trauma, the myositis ossificans is classified as 'myositis ossificans traumatica'. In this case report, a case of myositis ossificans traumatica is described, emphasizing its imaging features. Additionally, a literature review of the imaging features of myositis ossificans is discussed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 60-year old male pati

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a rare non-neoplastic disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification in soft tissues, mainly muscles. MO traumatica is characterized by ossification of the soft tissues after acute or repetitive trauma, burns, or surgical intervention. Muscular or soft tissue trauma is usually present as the underlying etiology. MO traumatica usually involves the extremity muscles. The number of reported cases involving the masticatory muscles is extremely low. The most common clinical sign of this condition is progressive limitation of mouth opening. Background Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) involves the heterotopic development of lamellar bone after a traumatic injury. Despite being termed "myositis," MOT is not limited to muscle but rather can involve tendons, fat, and fascia. "Traumatica" reflects that lesions are usually associated with a history of significant trauma, that is, fractures or surgery; however, many reports suggest they can also be linked to repetitive low-energy insults. In both cases, the inflammatory response secondary to tissue injury generates a proliferative osteoblastic cascade. Case Description We present

BACKGROUND: Myositis ossificans describes a heterotopic bone formation within a muscle. Thereby myositis ossificans is classified in two different groups: myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) which describes a genetic autosomal dominant rare disease and myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT). The exact pathogenesis of MOT is unclear. The aim of this article was to analyse and interpret the existing literature reporting MOT of masticatory muscles and compare the results with our own clinical experience with MOT. Risk-factors, etiology, clinical features, diagnostic imaging, as well as different

Background Myosits ossificans (MO) is a rare but important differential diagnosis for a heterotrophic bony tumor in the muscles. It is often misdiagnosed as a malignant tumor. With a previous trauma the diagnosis is myositis ossificans traumatic (MOT). In most cases, it is benign and predominantly seen in the big muscles. But there can be malignant etiologies too. Case Description We report a rare case of MO in the muscle of the craniocervical junction. This 37-year-old woman had a riding accident years ago. Because of persisting pain and cervical dysfunction, we did a total resection. Clinica
