We present the case of a 4-year-old boy who was the first in his family to be diagnosed as having fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, which was radiologically confirmed. The initial recurrence of the swellings, which were completely painless, is highlighted. The bilateral clinodactyly is also noted. It is suggested that when onset and confirmed diagnosis are in early childhood the disease is rapidly progressive.

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry1996eng
The case of a pediatric patient with myositis ossificans progressiva in whom it became increasingly difficult to obtain local anesthesia is presented. Intraosseous anesthesia was successful in allowing pain-free dental treatment to be completed. This approach should be considered in other patients who have limited mouth-opening ability due to injury or disease.

The authors report 3 cases of myositis ossificans progressiva (MOP) treated with i.v. dichloromethylenbiphosphonic acid. Two of these patients presented a severe development of the disease so that they could not walk anymore. After a few months of treatment with dichloromethylenbiphosphonic acid (300 mg/die for 10 continual days every month) sufficient recovery in motor capacity was achieved that walking was possible again. The favourable effect of therapy has been shown only by clinical features because there is no biological marker to monitor in the follow-up. During the treatment no side ef

Patients with fibrodysplasia (myositis) ossificans progressiva (FOP) (n = 28) were studied for up to 24 years. All had characteristic short big toes potentially recognizable at birth; there were radiographic changes in the toes, thumbs, cervical spine and metaphyses of the long bones, including exostoses. Ossification in the large skeletal muscles began from birth to 16 years (mean age 4.6 years) initially in 25 patients in the neck and upper spinal muscles, and later around the hips, major joints and jaw. The rate and extent of disability was unrelated to the time of onset. There was no evide

Creatine kinase (CK) isoenzyme BB-CK is predominantly found in brain and is not normally detected in the blood. A few recent reports, however, have described BB-CK in serum from several patients with osteopetrosis (OP). To evaluate the presence and specificity of BB-CK in serum in the osteopetroses among disorders that increase skeletal mass, we quantitated total CK activity and CK isoenzymes in 15 patients representing the five major clinical forms of OP (2 infantile, 3 intermediate, 7 adult [2 type I, 5 type II], and 3 carbonic anhydrase II [CA II] deficiency cases) and in 22 patients repres

BACKGROUND: Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare progressive disease of connective tissue with a poor prognosis.
CASE REPORT: A 16 year-old girl suffered from lameness of her right leg associated with inguinal swelling. Progressive aggravation of pain with extension of swelling to the posterior part of her thigh required an X-ray examination which showed hip dysplasia and calcifications around the hip. Angiography was normal; a diagnosis of hematoma was suggested by scannography and bone scintigraphy, but biopsy showed features of nodular fasciitis. The association of progressive ectopic

A seven-year-old boy with mental retardation and congenital skeletal malformations in the thumbs and big toes developed recurrent lumps in the shoulder and interscapular region. The lumps subsided slowly but left severe stiffness in the affected areas. The first biopsy revealed oedema and a chronic inflammatory response with fibromyxoid proliferation of the soft tissue. A second biopsy revealed ossification of muscle and fascia. The patient is a typical case of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by congenital skeletal malformations in

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a highly heterogeneous group of tumors originating from the neuroendocrine system, predominantly occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify the association of programmed death 1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression with clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with digestive system NENs. A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literatur

A retrospective study of 5 cases, 4 of myositis ossificans circumscripta (MOC) and 1 of non-ossificans myositis, is presented. The clinical presentation was a painful soft-tissue swelling, and the final diagnosis was established by biopsy in 3 cases and clinical evolution in 2 cases. Different types of imaging techniques were performed: 4 MRI, 2 arteriographies, 3 Tc 99m scintigraphies, 3 US, 3 CT and plain film radiographs for all patients. MOC is a benign process (as opposed to myositis ossificans progressiva, which is an inherited pathology with a fatal prognosis) with 3 phases of evolution

Fibrodysplasia (myositis) ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder in which there is a progressive ectopic ossification and skeletal malformation, mainly in the connective tissue of muscle. The diagnosis is based on the clinical findings and radiological demonstration of the skeletal malformations. We report a 5 year-old female case with FOP.

We describe a child who was treated for 10 years with etidronate disodium for myositis ossificans. There were no typical bouts of swelling, reddening or hardening of areas over the skeletal muscles with this treatment and there were no side effects. Nevertheless, a constant gradual progression of the disease led to severe limitation of joint movement. This is the first report on long-term treatment with etidronate disodium.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disorder. Patients with FOP develop progressive ossification of muscle and connective tissue associated with pain and disability. Onset is typically in childhood, and congenital anomalies of the feet are an early sign of this condition. Pain and stiffness of the spine or an inflammatory mass are common presenting features of FOP. Involvement of the spine often leads to complete fusion mimicking ankylosing spondylitis. Studies of twins and families suggest that FOP is a genetically inherited autosomal dominant tr

A child with myositis ossificans progressiva was treated for 8 years with ethane-1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonate (EHDP) 30-40 mg/kg per day. Latterly he complained of severe, progressive bone and joint pain which made standing and walking almost impossible. A radiographic skeletal survey showed diffuse ricket-like lesions. Withdrawal of EHDP therapy produced substantial improvement in his general condition as well as in the radiographic appearance of the bones. Multiple exostoses were observed in this case and, particularly those around the knees, presented a peculiar morphology. This supports the

BACKGROUND: Etidronate and pamidronate are bisphosphonates, a class of chemical compounds originally used to soften hard water and prevent soap scum. Etidronate was serendipitously found to abate calcification in a child with myositis ossificans progressiva.
OBJECTIVE: Review the basic pharmacology of these compounds, as well as clinical uses of the approved and nonapproved forms.
DISCUSSION: Etidronate is approved for the treatment of hypercalcemia, Paget's disease of bone, and ectopic calcification, and has been used to treat hyperparathyroidism and nephrolithiasis with limited success. Re

A family with five persons affected with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (myositis ossificans progressiva) in three generations is described. This is the first well documented three generation family with this condition and provides further evidence for autosomal dominant inheritance. A wide range of phenotypic severity is apparent, from disabling ectopic bone formation and premature death to an asymptomatic adult with characteristic big toe malformations.

Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare disorder of young adults characterized by ossification of the connective tissue of the voluntary muscles and ligaments. Although it is trauma-related, up to 40-60% of these patients have no history of previous injury. A young female with marked kyphosis and ankylosis of the spine presented with a recent onset of a rapidly growing painful mass over the anterior aspect of her left shoulder. She received an excisional biopsy but recurrent ossification developed soon after. It then spread to the biceps muscle with subsequent contracture deformities of the
