Reports about immune-related adverse events (IrAEs) induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been increasing. Although the importance of understanding joint involvement and myalgia as an IrAE has grown, little is known about its characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of articular IrAEs. We reviewed 133 patients who were treated with ICIs in our institution and referred to our rheumatologic. Among them, 2 (1.5%) developed arthritis during the use of anti-PD-1 inhibitor, and there was one patient with joint pain after anti-

BACKGROUND: Although infrequent, some rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients achieve disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD)-free sustained remission. The absence of RA-specific autoantibodies, such as anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), is known to be associated with this outcome but further mechanisms underlying the chronic nature of RA are largely unknown. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detected bone marrow edema (BME), or osteitis, strongly predicts erosive progression and is associated with ACPA positivity. Therefore, we hypothesized that the presence of MRI-detected osteitis

AIM: Patients describe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remission as the absence of any symptoms or return to normality. Residual ultrasound (US) synovitis was frequently described in remission cohorts in previous studies. US tenosynovitis evaluation and scoring seems to better follow clinical remission scores compared with synovitis in RA. Our objective was to verify the presence of US findings suggestive of persistent inflammation in a cohort of patients in remission according to their own opinion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three RA patients were prospectively enrolled in this pilot study betwe

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography is a safe and effective method which detects synovitis and erosions in joints early, while conventional radiography (CR) detects changes at later stages. These ultrasonographic findings have a relation with clinical parameters which help in predicting outcome.
METHODS: 60 patients of diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (ACR-EULAR 2010 criteria) were subjected to clinical examination, laboratory investigations, CR and ultrasonography. Data was compiled in Epi Info version 7 software and tests of significance were applied.
RESULTS: Mean tender and swollen joint coun

Intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy is an effective and safe immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancer. However, reactive arthritis (ReA) is reported as an adverse event in about 0.5-1% of patients receiving intravesical BCG therapy. ReA is known as a kind of spondyloarthritis, the main pathological finding of which is enthesitis. Here we report a patient with ReA induced by intravesical BCG therapy for bladder cancer, in whom the diagnosis of ReA was supported by ultrasonographic findings of enthesitis and synovitis. A 69-year-old male was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ o

OBJECTIVES: To quantify the extent of inflammation in psoriatic dactylitis and to examine the relationship between clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data in both tender and non-tender dactylitis.
METHODS: Seventeen patients with psoriatic dactylitis underwent clinical assessment for 6 months after change of treatment, usually to methotrexate. Measures of dactylitis included the Leeds Dactylitis Index, the assessment tool used in the Infliximab in Psoriatic Arthritis Clinical Trial (IMPACT), a simple count of tender dactlylitic digits and a count of all dactylitic digits, both tend

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether MRI assessed inflammation and damage in the wrist of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are associated with patient-reported outcomes (PROs).
METHODS: Wrist and hand MRIs of 210 patients with early RA from two investigator-initiated, randomised controlled studies (CIMESTRA/OPERA) were assessed according to the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology RA MRI score (RAMRIS) for synovitis, tenosynovitis, osteitis, bone erosions and joint space narrowing (JSN) at baseline, 1 and 5 years follow-up. These features, and changes therein, were assessed for association

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and osteoarticular infection can cause nonspecific articular and periarticular complaints in children. Although contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging is the reference standard imaging modality, musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US) is emerging as an important adjunct imaging modality that can provide valuable information relatively quickly without use of radiation or the need for sedation. However, diagnostic accuracy requires a systemic approach, familiarity with various US techniques, and an understanding of maturation-related changes. Speci

BACKGROUND: Chronic tenosynovitis of the wrist and hand is commonly seen by orthopedists, especially hand surgeons. However, cases with rice body formation are comparatively rare. Thus, we retrospectively reviewed the cases of chronic tenosynovitis in our department and evaluated the necessity of antibiotic therapy in the early post-surgical stage.
METHODS: We analyzed the medical and surgical records of patients who had undergone surgery for chronic tenosynovitis with rice body formation in our department from 1997 to 2015. We evaluated the causes of chronic tenosynovitis, culture findings,

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a heterogeneous chronic inflammatory arthritis characterised by a range of musculoskeletal conditions including enthesitis, dactylitis and synovitis as well as skin and nail manifestations. The foot is a complex mixture of tissues, all of which can be involved in this disease and is frequently the presenting feature. Areas covered: In this under-researched area, articles were reviewed from the authors' publications as well as from other known authors. This review will discuss how PsA affects the foot and ankle with a particular focus on synovitis, tenosynovitis, en

Adipose tissue does not belong to the most favorite structures to be visualized by ultrasound. It is not, however, free from various pathologies. The aim of this paper is to make abdominal cavity examiners more familiar with non-cancerous lesions found in intra-abdominal fat. The main focus is lesions that are rarely discussed in the literature. Visceral adiposity is one of important pathogenetic factors contributing to cardiovascular events, metabolic syndrome and even certain neoplasms. That is why this article exposes sonographic features that are the most characteristic of these lesions. T

BACKGROUND: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) bone marrow edema (BME, osteitis) and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) are associated with radiographic progression. ACPA have been associated with BME, but it is unknown if this association is confined to ACPA and BME. We performed cross-sectional analysis of the association of ACPA, rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies with BME and other types of inflammation (synovitis, tenosynovitis) detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Systemic rheumatic diseases frequently pose diagnostic challenges to the clinician. The precise nature of the disorder can be obscure and different disorders can present with similar symptoms, such as joint pain. Plain radiographs provide an appropriate starting point for detection of joint abnormalities. Musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI offer greater sensitivity in detecting synovitis, tenosynovitis and bony erosions, among other features. However, due to the rarity of these diseases and lack of prospective longitudinal trials, a broader picture of the epidemiology of these findings and the

BACKGROUND: In the population a high body mass index (BMI) has been associated with slightly increased inflammatory markers. Within rheumatoid arthritis (RA), however, a high BMI has been associated with less radiographic progression; this phenomenon is unexplained. We hypothesized that the phenomenon is caused by an inverse relationship between BMI and inflammation in hand and foot joints with RA. To explore this hypothesis, local inflammation was measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in early arthritis patients presenting with RA or other arthritides and in asymptomatic volunteers.

A previously unrecognized condition is described in wild free-ranging Pribilof arctic foxes ( Alopex lagopus pribilofensis) from the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, USA. This condition is called shaggy lame fox syndrome (SLFS) denoting the primary clinical signs first observed. Criteria used to suspect SLFS on gross examination included emaciation, failure to shed winter pelage and moderate to severe polyarthritis. Criteria used to confirm SLFS histologically included polyarthritis (characterized by lymphoplasmacytic synovitis, tenosynovitis, bursitis, periosteal bony proliferation, and periarticula

Treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is rarely personalized, since predictors of disease course are lacking. The severity of RA can be measured objectively by radiographic progression. The most reliable way to measure radiographic progression is in a longitudinal cohort with serial time points, scoring on a quantitative scale, with a validated scoring method and trained readers. Current models used to predict radiographic progression are based on C-reactive protein and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies. Other biomarkers could increase the prognostic ability of these models.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sensitive method to detect inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), visualizing synovitis, bone marrow edema, and tenosynovitis. The prevalence of MRI-detected tenosynovitis and its diagnostic value in early arthritis are unclear. This study was undertaken to identify the frequency of MRI-detectable tenosynovitis at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and wrist joints in early arthritis and the association of these with RA and the severity of RA.
METHODS: A total of 178 patients with early arthritis underwent unilateral 1.5T extremity MRI at baseli
