Haglund Deformity and Plantar Calcaneal Spur in Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy: Prevalence, Coexistence, and Radiographic Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is a common cause of posterior heel pain and has been associated with several osseous abnormalities around the calcaneus. Although Haglund deformity and plantar calcaneal spur (PCS) have each been linked to IAT, their coexistence and radiographic characteristics have not been comprehensively evaluated. This study compared the prevalence of Haglund deformity and PCS between patients with IAT and controls, assessed their coexistence, and examined radiographic features associated with IAT. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included

Presence of Calcaneal Spurs and Injury Severity of Ankle Sprain in Emergency Room Patients: A Retrospective Analysis.

This study aims to evaluate the incidence of calcaneal spurs in patients presenting with ankle sprains and to determine the association between the presence of spurs and the severity of the trauma sustained. Calcaneal spurs occur in 15-20% of the general population, and when symptomatic, they can have a considerable negative impact on an individual's quality of life. We conducted a retrospective analysis of individuals aged 18 years and above who presented with ankle sprains in the emergency department over the course of 1 year. A total of 3,667 patients with ankle sprains were included in the

Quantitative Radiographic Morphology of Posterior Calcaneal Spurs Independently Predicts Patient-Centered Outcomes After Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy for Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy: An MCID and PASS Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) is frequently associated with posterior calcaneal spurs; however, the prognostic significance of spur morphology for patient-centered treatment outcomes remains unquantified. This study aimed to establish treatment-specific minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) thresholds after extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and to determine whether quantitative spur morphology independently predicts achievement of these patient-centered endpoints. Methods: In this retrospective cohort s

Calcaneal spur detection from lateral foot radiographs using deep feature engineering.

Deep learning achieves high accuracy in medical imaging but requires large datasets. Performance decreases in small datasets. This study proposes a deep feature engineering (DFE) framework for calcaneal spur detection in X-ray images. A curated dataset of 775 X-ray images was analyzed, with 316 labeled as no finding and 459 as calcaneal spur. The framework has five phases: (i) feature extraction from 19 pretrained CNNs, (ii) feature selection with iterative neighborhood component analysis (INCA), (iii) classification with a t-algorithm-based k-nearest neighbors (tkNN) ensemble, (iv) generation

Comparison of Endoscopic Plantar Fascia Release With and Without Calcaneal Spur Excision for Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic plantar fascia release (EPFR) is a common surgical option for recalcitrant plantar fasciitis. Although calcaneal spur excision (CSE) is frequently performed as an adjunct, its added clinical benefit remains unclear. This study compared outcomes of EPFR alone vs EPFR combined with CSE. METHODS: This retrospective study included 23 patients (30 feet) who underwent endoscopic surgery for plantar fasciitis between 2017 and 2024. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to surgical procedure performed: EPFR (n = 22 feet) and EPFR+CSE (n = 8 feet). Pain and functional ou

Baxter's Nerve Entrapment Caused by a Lipoma with Abductor Digiti Minimi Atrophy: A Case Report.

Baxter's nerve entrapment, also known as Baxter neuropathy, has various causes such as a calcaneal spur or plantar fasciitis. However, no cases of lipoma compression have been reported. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass on the medial aspect of the plantar surface of left foot. MRI showed a lobulated mass in the medial foot extending into the central plantar space, showing fat signals in all sequences. Additionally, atrophy with fatty change of the abductor digiti minimi muscle was noted. The patient underwent surgical excision, and pathological examin

Accelerated versus conventional radial pressure wave therapy for symptomatic calcaneal spur: A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Calcaneal spurs are bony outgrowths typically originating from the medial calcaneal tuberosity and are commonly associated with chronic plantar heel pain. Radial pressure wave therapy (rPWT) is widely used when symptoms do not respond to conservative treatments; however, optimal treatment intervals and scheduling remain unclear. This study aimed to compare conventional and accelerated rPWT schedules to determine whether a shorter treatment duration could achieve similar clinical outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-eight participants with heel pain lasting at least six months
