Comparison of methods for evaluating interfacial fracture toughness and bond strength of adhesives to dentin.

OBJECTIVES: To compare four mechanical tests used to evaluate bond strength and mode I fracture toughness (KIc) of dental adhesives, based on data consistency and variability. METHODS: Two nominal bond strength tests, microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and mold-enclosed shear bond strength (ME-SBS), and two KIc tests, notchless triangular prism (NTP) and split-chevron-notched-beam (SCNB), were performed to evaluate a two-step self-etch primer (Clearfil SE Bond II, CSE) and a universal adhesive applied in etch-and-rinse mode (Tetric N-Bond Universal, TNB). Failure patterns were analyzed by scan

Molecular insights into pre-existing crack induced mechanical degradation of CSH gel.

Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), the primary product formed during cement hydration, serves as the key binding phase and is characterized by a multiscale, heterogeneous, and highly disordered architecture. Within its intrinsic microstructure, detrimental pores and nonuniform cracks progressively aggravate the deterioration of interparticle bonding under service conditions. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations coupled with uniaxial tensile loading are employed to systematically investigate the intrinsic mechanical response of CSH and the degradation mechanisms associated with Mode I

Hierarchical crystalline organic-inorganic framework enabling high-modulus toughening in nacre.

Enhancing toughness in nanocomposites often involves viscoelastic organic phases, but this typically reduces stiffness. We describe a high-modulus toughening mechanism in mature Cristaria plicata nacre arising from a crystalline organic-inorganic framework composed of aragonite nanorods alternately integrated with intratabular biomolecular crystallites. Due to the critical slip-length effect, these crystalline units approach the theoretical limits of modulus and strength. The nanoconfined biomolecular crystallites function as nanopins at interlamellar interphases, alleviating stress concentrat

Experimental and Numerical Simulation Study of the Main Controlling Factors of Borehole Stability with Different Coal Physical Properties.

To resolve the low efficiency of gas drainage in soft coal seams caused by borehole breakout during coalbed gas drainage, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of borehole deformation and the main controlling factors of borehole stability with different coal physical properties. This paper investigates the geometric differences of borehole breakout in different preloaded coal samples under various factors using the Particle Flow Code (PFC). First, the tensile and compressive strengths were measured through Brazilian splitting and uniaxial compression tests. By integrating multiple param

Navicular fractures in elite athletes: Clarifying the evidence base of the 2025 International Foot and Ankle Sports Consensus.

The recent international foot and ankle sports consensus and systematic review on navicular fractures in elite athletes addresses a highly relevant and challenging topic in sports medicine and provides valuable guidance in an area where standardized treatment and return to sport (RTS) recommendations remain limited. However, several methodological and reporting issues within the systematic review warrant clarification, given their potential influence on RTS decision-making. The reported mean RTS time of 8.2 weeks after operative treatment of navicular stress fractures appears to result from an

Running on Empty: Relative Energy Deficiency in a Military Endurance Athlete.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) is a clinical syndrome characterized by low caloric intake relative to energy expenditure, resulting in a cascade of endocrine, metabolic, and musculoskeletal consequences. In females, hallmark features include decreased bone mineral density and menstrual dysfunction, though the syndrome affects multiple organ systems in both sexes. We present the case of a 22-year-old active-duty military member who suffered recurrent stress fractures, irregular menstrual cycles, and chronic fatigue that impacted her duty status. She was noted to have a long histor

Aptamer-functionalized EGCG nanocarrier for neutrophil-targeted AKBA delivery promotes anxiety-related fracture healing.

Anxiety is clinically associated with impaired fracture healing, but the underlying immunological mechanism remains unclear, and no targeted therapy is available. In a mouse model of chronic restraint stress (CRS)-induced anxiety with femoral fracture, we observed expansion of TGFβ1+CCR5+ double-positive neutrophils in the bone marrow. These neutrophils inhibited osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) via TGFβ1 secretion, while BMSC-derived CCL5 reciprocally promoted neutrophil activation, forming a detrimental feedback that disrupted fracture repair. Mechanis

Fracture propagation and permeability enhancement mechanisms induced by near-roof hydraulic fracturing in soft coal seams.

Soft and low-permeability coal seams are prone to borehole collapse, unstable gas-extraction pathways, and a restricted stimulation range when conventional in-seam fracturing is applied. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes a near-roof hydraulic-fracturing strategy. Coal-immediate-roof assemblages from Heyuan Coal Mine were tested using a large-scale true-triaxial hydraulic-fracturing system under different triaxial in-situ stress states and injection rates. Fracture initiation, propagation, and failure modes were identified by jointly analyzing injection pressure, acoustic-emiss

Are we at risk of increasing sarcopenia? Implications for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Sarcopenia is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder characterised by reduced muscle strength, impaired muscle quantity or quality, and declining physical performance, with important consequences for falls, fractures, disability, and loss of independence. Whether sarcopenia prevalence itself is rising remains difficult to quantify because diagnostic frameworks and surveillance methods vary, yet a growing burden is plausible. Population ageing, increasing multimorbidity, obesity, hospitalisation, surgery, and incomplete recovery after musculoskeletal events are likely to increase the absolute n

A rare traumatic triad: Open bicondylar non-conjoint Hoffa fracture with partial tibial tubercle and medial epicondyle avulsions - A case report and biomechanical analysis.

UNLABELLED: Coronal shear fractures of the distal femoral condyles are rare intra-articular injuries, and the simultaneous occurrence of a non-conjoint bicondylar Hoffa fracture with a partial anterior tibial tubercle avulsion and a medial epicondyle avulsion constitutes an exceptionally complex traumatic triad. We report the case of a 35-year-old male motorcyclist who sustained this "floating" articular block injury (AO/OTA 33-B3.3) following a high-velocity accident. Diagnostic assessment utilizing Computed Tomography with 3D reconstruction revealed a vertical Letenneur Type II fracture of t

High-Mileage Running-Induced Heel Strike Anemia in a 46-Year-Old Female.

Foot-strike hemolysis is an underrecognized cause of iron-deficiency anemia in endurance athletes, resulting from repetitive mechanical destruction of erythrocytes during prolonged running. While often subclinical, extreme training volumes may overwhelm compensatory mechanisms and lead to clinically significant anemia that is frequently misattributed to nutritional deficiency or gastrointestinal blood loss. We present a 46-year-old female with mild intellectual disability secondary to traumatic brain injury (TBI) who presented with progressive fatigue and left hip pain. Imaging demonstrated a

Biomechanical comparison between two headless screw configurations for fixation of coronal shear capitellum humeri fractures.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of coronal shear capitellum humeri fractures remains challenging due to limited access to the articular fragment and no universally established operative techniques. Smaller approaches implementing one headless compression screw (HCS) are used to minimize cartilage damage and risk of fracture fragmentation. Aim of this study was to investigate biomechanically two HCS fixation techniques of coronal shear capitellum humeri fractures. METHODS: Sixteen human cadaveric humeri with simulated Dubberley IA (AO/OTA13-B3) coronal shear fractures were assigned to two group

Macro-Meso-Micro Cross-Scale Correlation of Rheological Evolution in Waxy Crude Oil Emulsions under Dynamic Cooling Conditions.

The rheological deterioration of waxy crude oil emulsions poses a significant challenge to the flow assurance of subsea and long-distance pipelines. By integrating simultaneous rheology in situ microscopy with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the evolution of apparent viscosity was investigated under varying temperatures and shear rates. A cross-scale investigation was conducted to establish the correlations among macroscopic rheological response, mesoscopic structural evolution, and microscopic molecular interfacial behavior. The results indicate that the stepwise elevation in apparent vi

An analysis of different reconstruction techniques for the radius: a finite element analysis.

Pathological fractures due to metastatic bone disease frequently require palliative stabilization. While polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) provides immediate mechanical stabilization, its limited bending and multiaxial properties raise concerns. Reinforcement strategies such as plate fixation, intramedullary nails, and metallic augmentation have been proposed, yet their mechanical behavior under physiological loading remains insufficiently characterized. This study aims to evaluate the mechanical performance of three reconstruction strategies for a proximal radial defect: PMMA alone, PMMA combined
