BACKGROUND: Medial malleolar stress fractures (MMSFs) are uncommon but potentially high-risk injuries in athletes. In basketball players, repetitive jumping, landing, and cutting may expose the characteristic vertical fracture pattern to substantial shear, yet sport-specific operative data remain limited. This study reports the outcomes of plate-based fixation for MMSFs in high-level basketball players.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed of 10 high-level basketball players treated surgically for MMSF between 2007 and 2025. All patients underwent radiography, magnetic resonance

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a continuum-scale computational workflow for assessing fracture behaviour of zirconia crowns in dental implant systems under ISO 14801 loading conditions.
METHODS: A three-dimensional finite element model of a Matrix multi-level implant system was developed. Global elastic analysis was first used to evaluate the maximum principal tensile stress distribution in the zirconia crown. The extended finite element method was then applied to assess damage initiation and crack-path development. A localized phase-field fracture sub-model was used to examine regul

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to address three systemic barriers in conventional palliative psychotherapy-the "somatic-reflective disconnect," compressed terminal timelines, and Western individualistic biases-by developing an integrative, transcultural, and secular care-planning framework to map and systematically disrupt end-of-life existential suffering.
METHODS: We employed a dual-stage qualitative design. First, we developed the Personhood Pentadigm (PP) by translating the Eastern psychology of the Five Aggregates into five secular dimensions: Physical Image, Somatosensory Tone, Role and N

Passive smart windows require materials that combine high daylight transparency, strong solar-heat shielding, thermal buffering, mechanical robustness, and cycling stability without external energy input. Here, we report a semi-crystalline hydrogel that couples stearyl methacrylate (SMA) side-chain crystallization/melting with oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) lower critical solution temperature phase separation through 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) crosslinking. This dual-phase program generates three adaptive states: low-temperature latent-heat release with a temper

The primary flight feather shaft (PFF) plays a crucial role in adjusting avian's flight posture and flight speed while bearing intense aerodynamic force, and it demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties and fracture resistance. The influence of the structure of a PFF on its fracture resistance mechanism (including crack initiation resistance and crack propagation resistance) remains unclear. This study focused on the research subject of the PFF of Aegypius monachus (cinereous vulture) and the impact of the macro/microstructural characteristics and components on the fracture resistance mec

The development of high-performance elastomers that are simultaneously strong, crack-tolerant, and wear-resistant remains a persistent challenge. Herein, we design bio-inspired semicarbazide chain extender featuring high-density hydrogen-bonding sites to synthesize poly(urethane-urea) (PUU). The use of two such extenders creates geometric confinement that promotes ordered H-bonding arrays, which synergistically enhances the mechanical performance. The resulting PUU-HI elastomer exhibits a nanoscale-ordered phase-separated structure and maximized H-bonding, achieving a tensile strength of 120.2

Super damage resistance requires high fracture energy in all directions, therefore, although fibrous hydrogels have demonstrated impressive reinforcing effects, their anisotropic nature usually prevents them from performing well. In this work, we propose a strategy to resolve this dilemma by strengthening constitutive motifs in isotropic fibrous hydrogel through nonsolvent quenching followed by salting-out. This strategy generates isotropic nanofiber networks and subsequently reinforces those fibers via densification and crystallization, yielding dense and crystalline isotropic nanofiber (DCIF

A woman in her thirties presented with progressive bone pain, muscle weakness, recurrent stress fractures, and delayed fracture healing. Laboratory investigations demonstrated hypophosphatemia, renal phosphate wasting, elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), and inappropriately low 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, leading to a diagnosis of FGF23-mediated tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) approximately one year after symptom onset. Bone scintigraphy demonstrated multiple fractures involving the ribs and pubic bones. [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([18F]-F

BACKGROUND: Transverse patella fractures requiring surgical fixation are typically treated with a tension band construct using metal wire. This technique is associated with high rates of complications and reoperation. Alternative fixation technique utilizing non-absorbable suture materials have been introduced. This biomechanical study aims to compare the stability of two tension band constructs, both utilizing headed cannulated lag screws, with either suture tape or traditional metal wire under cyclic load conditions, simulating repetitive physiological stress.

BACKGROUND: Despite improvements in fixation strategies over the past few decades, post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) rates following acetabular fracture have remained relatively constant. Chronic exposure to elevated contact stresses has been shown to result in both radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis and articular cartilage degeneration, but no association between contact mechanics and PTOA risk in reduced acetabular fractures has been established. The objective of this study was to determine if elevated contact stresses after acetabular fracture fixation are associated with future rad

Osteoporosis, a significant age-related disease, is marked by diminished bone density and an elevated risk of fractures, representing a considerable global health challenge. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are essential in maintaining bone integrity through their differentiation into osteoblasts, which are crucial for bone formation. Nevertheless, the aging of BMSCs diminishes their regenerative abilities and intensifies inflammation, thereby playing a critical role in osteoporosis pathogenesis. This review explores the intricate mechanisms of BMSC senescence and its influence on os

PURPOSE: 4 mol% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (4Y-PSZ) offers improved translucency compared to 3% tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia, but it lacks transformation toughening, which may affect its flexural strength. Because adhesive luting was shown to improve mechanical performance of all-ceramic materials, this research evaluated the influence of different cements on the three-point flexural strength of 4Y-PSZ bonded to bovine dentin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 1-mm-thick dentin slices were obtained from bovine incisors, paired with 1-mm-thick 4Y-PSZ slices, and then divide

BACKGROUND: Bony stress injury (BSI) is an overuse injury through excessive repetitive loads on normal healthy bone that commonly affects military recruits. Confirmation of diagnosis often requires costly investigations such as MRI, and there is a need for better prior screening procedures. This study aimed to assess a clinical risk assessment tool 'Hip1' for its utility to screen and identify BSI for further detailed confirmatory investigation.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the Defence Medical Information Capability Programme, identifying all patients potentially presenting wit

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to compare the cumulative loading needed to seat the planned stem size between straight and offset broach handles. We hypothesized that the cumulative loading is higher when using the offset broach handle, whose force vector is not truly in the axis of the recipient femoral shaft. Thus, the increased stresses applied to the femur intraoperatively could contribute to increased risk of perioperative fracture.
METHODS: For each broach insertion and for each of our 20 femurs specimens, the mean force, maximum force and cumulative force were recorded. Th
