Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Cohesive Extended Finite Element Modeling of Atypical Femoral Fracture.

Atypical femoral fracture (AFF) is a rare fracture associated with prolonged bisphosphonate (BP) treatment that occurs in the subtrochanter and midshaft of the femur. The association of AFF with BP treatment suggests alterations in femoral material properties with treatment. Femoral geometry has also been identified as a potential contributor to AFF. This study aims to demonstrate the novel integration of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with cohesive extended finite element method (XFEM) to assess AFF. Using this approach, we quantified the independent contributions of femoral

Pressure-Driven Atomic Reconstruction Governs Strength Collapse in Slightly Twisted Moiré Diamane Nanostructures.

The advent of moiré engineering and twistronics has unlocked new possibilities for tailoring the structure and properties of diamane. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we investigate the pressure-driven phase transition from hydrogenated twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) to moiré diamane at ambient temperature. We reveal that atomic reconstruction in small-angle tBLG (θ < 10°) under out-of-plane pressure produces distinct microstructures, comprising covalently bonded AA-diamane domains separated by metastable, weakly interacting graphene boundaries. Decreasing twist angles significantly

High Demand Loading Conditions and Their Effect on Polyethylene Stresses in Lumbar Total Joint Replacement: Implications for Spine Wear Protocols.

The study aimed to compare contact stresses for a novel lumbar total joint replacement (LTJR) during a standardized duty cycle with elevated loading conditions. A finite element model (FEM) of an LTJR was developed, verified, and validated using the ASME V&V40 standard. Simulations were performed using LS-Dyna. Increasing the axial loading for the 95th percentile male generally resulted in an increase in the peak contact pressures throughout the duty cycle. Specifically, contact pressure reached a maximum of 37.6 MPa. Despite this increase, the polyethylene peak contact stresses remained consi

A Highly Permeable and Three-Dimensional Integrated Electronic System for Wearable Human-Robot Interaction.

Permeable electronics promise improved physiological comfort, but remain constrained by limited functional integration and poor mechanical robustness. Here, we report a three-dimensional (3D) permeable electronic system that overcomes these challenges by combining electrospun SEBS nanofiber mats, high-resolution liquid metal conductors patterned via thermal imprinting (50 μm), and a strain isolators (SIL) that protects vertical interconnects (VIAs) from stress concentration. This architecture achieves ultrahigh air permeability (> 5.09 mL cm-2 min-1), exceptional stretchability (750% fracture

Observation on analgesic effects of ropivacaine sciatic nerve block guided by ultrasound combined with a nerve stimulator after fracture of the calcaneus.

BACKGROUND: Calcaneal fracture (FOC) is a common foot trauma. Severe postoperative pain can easily trigger the body's stress response, increase the risk of thrombosis, and seriously affect the recovery of patients. Sciatic nerve block (SNB) guided by traditional nerve stimulator (NS) has some problems such as inaccurate positioning and unstable block effect. Ultrasound-guided technology can visualize the nerve structure and puncture process in real time to improve the accuracy of block. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we observed the analgesic effect of ropivacaine SNB on FOC under the guidance of

Study on the evolution law of failure depth of large mining height and ultra-wide working surface.

Advancements in coal mining technology and sophisticated equipment have popularized large-scale mining with broad working faces. This study uses the 6306 ultra-wide working face of Jincheng Sihe Coal Mine as a case to establish a mechanical model of the bottom plate through theoretical analysis, field measurements, and numerical simulations. These methods address water outburst issues caused by high and wide working faces. The research systematically examines changes in the coal seam floor's displacement and stress fields during mining. Acoustic emission characteristics and failure precursors under uniaxial cyclic compression.

Understanding the damage evolution and failure mechanisms of brittle rocks is crucial for evaluating the long-term stability of underground engineering structures. In this study, uniaxial cyclic compression tests were conducted on marble specimens, and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was employed to investigate microcrack initiation, propagation, and coalescence. A comprehensive analysis integrating AE event characteristics, three-dimensional localization, b-value evolution, and fractal dimension computation was performed. The results demonstrate that marble failure can be divided into three

Mechanical Properties of Glycated Cracked Articular Cartilage Under Uniaxial and Cyclic Tensile Loading.

PURPOSE: In clinical diagnosis, diabetes, and arthritis were often considered independent, which leads to diabetics getting worse by ignoring early arthritis symptoms. Therefore, the fatigue damage mechanism of articular cartilage in a hyperglycemic environment must be clarified. METHODS: Under simulating physiological loads, this study delved into glycated cracked cartilage's fracture toughness and damage mechanism. Moreover, by introducing the glucose concentration as a crucial variable, a constitutive model of the ratcheting behavior of glycated cracked cartilage was established, which is

Numerical simulation of hydraulic-natural fracture interaction based on the continuous-discontinuous element method.

Shale reservoirs commonly contain numerous geological discontinuities, such as natural fractures, faults, and lithological interfaces. These discontinuities significantly influence the formation of hydraulic fracture networks. Therefore, to investigate the impact of different natural fracture parameters on fracture network development, this study establishes a stress-seepage-fracture multi-field coupling model for fractured reservoirs based on the continuous-discontinuous algorithm. The effects of natural fracture angle, stress difference, natural fracture strength, and injection rate on fract

Little to no active faulting likely at Europa's seafloor today.

Many of the outer Solar System's icy satellites feature known or suspected subsurface oceans, at least some of which are likely situated atop rocky interiors. Water-rock interactions at and beneath these seafloors might support active chemoautotrophic habitats, with subseafloor fluid flow facilitated by active faulting and hydrothermal systems. Absent such phenomena, however, any attainment of chemical equilibrium between the seafloor and ocean might limit the availability of chemical energy for life. Here, we characterise the stress state of the seafloor of Jupiter's moon Europa, and thus the

Synergistic effects of surfactants and compound acids on the mechanical and microscopic properties of coal.

This study examines the effects of synergistic treatment with surfactants and compound acids on the mechanical properties (e.g., strength and deformation characteristics) and microscopic features (e.g., pore structure, surface wettability, and chemical composition) of coal. The results indicate that acid treatment weakens coal strength, and the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) further exacerbates this effect. Acidification significantly reduces acoustic emission energy, electromagnetic radiation energy, and infrared radiation temperature released by coal. Moreover, SDS modifies the che

The Inflammation-Energy Metabolism Axis: A Central Driver of Sarcopenia-Osteoporosis: A Narrative Review.

Sarcopenia-osteoporosis, the concomitant loss of muscle and bone mass, is a geriatric comorbidity that significantly increases the risk of falls, fractures, and mortality. Despite the acknowledgment of muscle-bone crosstalk, the underlying mechanism driving their simultaneous decline remains poorly understood, resulting in a lack of effective integrated therapies. This review aims to elucidate the "inflammation-energy metabolism axis" as the central driver of this condition. This review contends that sarcopenia-osteoporosis is not a coincidental comorbidity but a single pathological syndrome d
