Protective and therapeutic effects of gallic acid on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in rats: modulation of inflammation, fibrosis and endoplasmic reticulum/mitochondrial stress pathways.

BACKGROUND: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe adverse effect of long-term bisphosphonate therapy characterized by impaired bone remodeling, inflammation, and fibrosis. Gallic acid (GA), a natural phenolic compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has been proposed as a protective agent against drug-induced tissue injury. This study investigated the prophylactic and therapeutic effects of GA on zoledronic acid (ZOA)–induced MRONJ in rats. METHODS: Thirty-two adult female Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8): Con

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw primary prevention: multidomain long-term intervention versus pre-bisphosphonate treatment standalone dental intervention. A retrospective multi-center comparative cohort study.

PURPOSE: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious adverse drug reaction mostly associated to the use of bone-modifying agents. Preventive dental strategies aim to reduce its risk, but the comparative benefit of structured long-term interventions versus a single pre-treatment dental visit remains unclear. This study assessed the impact of a structured long-term, multidomain dental prevention protocol compared with a single baseline dental assessment in patients receiving an oncological-based, high dose (HD) regime of Zoledronic acid (ZA). METHODS: Between 2012 and 2015,

Clinical evaluation of femoral head cartilage damage using 5-Tesla MRI T2-mapping sequence-based on pathological specimens.

BACKGROUND: Traditional imaging modalities like X-rays and conventional MRI lack sensitivity to detect early microscopic changes in cartilage damage, making them insufficient for evaluating early degenerative changes. exploring more sensitive imaging techniques to precisely quantify cartilage damage has become a key focus in current OA research. This study aimed to evaluate the degree of femoral head cartilage damage by quantifying the signal intensity of cartilage regions of interest (ROI) using the 5T MRI T2-mapping sequence and correlating it with Mankin pathological scores for cartilage da

Radiographic lateral hip joint view can predict contralateral asymptomatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: Even in cases of bilateral osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), only one side often collapses and the contralateral side is often asymptomatic at the time of initial diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of asymptomatic ONFH based on the radiographic necrotic area on the symptomatic side. METHODS: The study included 89 hips of patients with ONFH who were divided into two groups: unilateral ONFH and bilateral ONFH groups, with a minimum follow-up of 3 years. The extent of the necrotic area in the anteroposterior (ANA) and lateral (LNA) radiographic hip joint vie

Geographic characterization of intra-articular pathologies in early-stage avascular necrosis of the hip.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip is a progressive condition that often leads to femoral head collapse, necessitating total hip arthroplasty. While core decompression (CD) is commonly performed for the treatment of early-stage AVN, the incidence and geographic location of concomitant intra-articular pathologies that may contribute to symptoms and disease progression are incompletely understood. HYPOTHESIS / PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence, anatomical distribution, and diagnostic concordance of MRI vs. arthroscopy in detecting intra-articular path

Effect of zoledronate on avascular necrosis of the femoral head according to disease stage and bone resorption activity.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head is a progressive condition that leads to collapse of the femoral head in 85% of symptomatic patients when left untreated. As it is typically a disease that occurs among the younger population, the consequent arthroplasty of the hip is a radical procedure. In this study, we investigated the effect of intravenous zoledronate infusion in patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head. METHODS: This retrospective study included 94 hips diagnosed with AVN of the femoral head that were treated off-label with 4 mg intravenous zoledronate

Traumatic Bilateral Asymmetric Hip Dislocation With a Rotated Pipkin Type II Femoral Head Fracture.

Bilateral asymmetric hip dislocation is a rare injury with a complex mechanism, and treatment of delayed cases is difficult with unpredictable outcomes. We report a case of a 25-year-old man with bilateral asymmetric hip joint dislocation (right anterior, left posterior) and a Pipkin type II left femoral head fracture. His dislocations were reduced under sedation within 4 hours of the accident, but the surgical fixation of his fracture was delayed for 4 days. Hip dislocation should be reduced within 6 hours of injury. Postreduction CT in high-energy trauma is especially crucial for detecting a

Severe toxicity-free survival following acute lymphoblastic leukemia in patients aged 1-45 years: a Danish cohort study.

With increasing survival in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), long-term toxicities have become a critical aspect. A novel measure, designated Severe Toxicity-free survival (STFS), was developed through international consensus to integrate the most severe, symptomatic organ toxicities in outcome evaluation. This measure has not been applied to real-world data before. We assessed the incidence of 21 predefined Severe Toxicities in a nationwide cohort of 506 ALL patients aged 1-45 years treated according to the NOPHO ALL2008 protocol. At five years, event-free survival was 84.4% (95% CI: 81.3-8

Nutritional Risk in Oral Surgery Inpatients: Insights from a Retrospective Analysis Using Nutritional Risk Screening-2002.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is common and often goes unrecognized among hospitalized patients, particularly older adults. Early identification and individualized nutritional interventions are essential for improving outcomes. The Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) is a validated tool widely used in acute care settings, but its utility in dental and oral surgery remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of NRS-2002 in patients admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) at a university-affiliated dental hospital in Japan, and to exam
