BACKGROUND: Since its initial description, the modified Dunn procedure has emerged as a valuable surgical option for treating slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), particularly in cases of severe deformity. Previous literature has focused on complications and short-term results following this procedure, but little is known about the morphologic development of the upper femoral epiphysis following successful treatment with the modified Dunn technique, uncomplicated by osteonecrosis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, including all modified Dunn procedures performed by 7 surgeons

Background/Objectives: Timing of fixation of stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. As pressure mounts to limit inpatient admissions and procedures, our aim was to investigate whether treatment of SCFE in a delayed manner is a safe alternative to immediate fixation. Our hypothesis was that there would be no difference in complications for stable slips treated immediately (<24 h) versus semi-electively (>24 h) with screw fixation. Methods: A retrospective review was performed at two academic institutions during a 10-year-period yielding 91 SCFEs. Data collected includ

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for avascular necrosis (AVN) in patients with unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) were controversial and multifactorial. This meta-analysis summarizes existing evidence to identify risk factors for AVN.
METHODS: Search strategies followed the recommendations of the Cochrane Collaboration. Electronic searches such as PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane were systematically searched for publications concerning risk factors for unstable SCFE from the inception date to October 2024. The RevMan 5.3 software and Stata 17.0 software were used for the me

CASE: A 13-year-old competitive basketball player presented with bilateral acute-on-chronic, unstable (1 side) slipped capital femoral epiphysis. He underwent a single-event bilateral modified Dunn capital realignment osteotomy and fixation. At 4 years postsurgery, he has excellent clinical function, has returned to playing competitive basketball, and has good radiological outcomes.
CONCLUSION: A single-event bilateral modified Dunn osteotomy is an option for severe bilateral SCFE. Centers with the necessary setup and a dedicated hip team can attempt this procedure. Modified Dunn osteotomy ca

BACKGROUND: The precise pathological mechanisms through which obesity increases the risk of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the impact of childhood obesity on the morphology of the capital femoral epiphysis in children and adolescents without hip disorders.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study that included 4,888 children and adolescents 7 to 19 years of age who underwent a hip or pelvic computed tomography (CT) scan, most for abdominal pain, between 2004 and 2022. Automated 3D-CT analysis assessed epiphyseal tubercle hei

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a rare occurrence in the paediatric hip. Diagnosis is challenging. It may have an insidious onset. It has potentially devastating consequences for the paediatric hip. There may also be sequelae that persist until adulthood. The femoral epiphysis typically remains in the acetabulum, and the femoral metaphysis displaces anterosuperiorly, leading to the typical sequelae of a shortened, externally rotated leg that exhibits obligate external rotation with flexion. The authors present a case of a 'reverse SCFE'. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first c

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) requires surgical treatment. In German-speaking countries, dynamic in-situ fixation is commonly used for mild SCFE lenta. Various implants are available for this purpose.
OBJECTIVE: High complication rates have been reported for the removal of titanium gliding screws. In this retrospective study, we analyzed the complications in the treatment of SCFE, particularly focusing on the removal of sliding screws made of stainless steel and K‑wires.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 111 patients with SCFE were treated, including 96 fixations using

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a known complication of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) that can lead to poor long-term outcomes. Therefore, predicting the onset of AVN is crucial for effective management. While various preoperative methods have been proposed to predict AVN, none have demonstrated accurate prediction. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of preoperative perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in accurately predicting the onset of AVN in patients with SCFE.
METHODS: This study included 17 cases (18 hips) treated for SCFE at a single institution between J

CASE: This case report, with 3 years of follow-up, describes a 9-year-old boy who suffered sequential Delbet type IV proximal femoral fractures. Three months postoperatively he had a unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis and had to undergo further surgery to address this.
CONCLUSION: Proximal femur fractures are rare in childhood, and a slipped capital femoral epiphysis after fixation of a Delbet type 4 fracture has only been described once before in the literature. This case report highlights underlying risk factors of subsequent slipped capital femoral epiphysis after a Delbet type I

Slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE), also known as slipped capital femoral epiphysis, is a serious adolescent orthopedic condition, with potential for bilateral involvement. While most cases are idiopathic and occur during periods of rapid growth, trauma can unmask underlying physeal instability. We present a rare case of a young girl with a normal body mass index (BMI) who developed a traumatic SUFE in the left hip, followed one year later by a delayed, non-traumatic SUFE in the right hip. The delayed diagnosis of contralateral hip involvement underscores the diagnostic complexities of ear

CASE: An Indian girl, diagnosed with osteoid osteoma of tibia and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis at the age of 6 years, presented 3 years later with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and was found to have a mutation in the GALNT3 gene associated with hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis. She underwent in situ screw fixation with prophylactic pinning of the other hip. At a 2-year follow-up, the patient had a good range of motion and no radiological signs of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.
CONCLUSION: GALNT3 gene mutation with SCFE is a previously unreported assoc

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis occurs in childhood and adolescence and is associated with potentially serious lifelong complications and sequelae. The incidence of slipped capital femoral epiphysis appears to be increasing as rates of childhood obesity increase. Patients may have a noted limp and present with poorly localized pain in the hip, groin, thigh, buttock, low back, or knee. Pain increases with activities that require hip flexion, such as squatting, prolonged sitting, and riding a bicycle. Inspection may reveal an antalgic walking pattern with a Trendelenburg gait and external rota

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a unique clinical entity, and many studies in the past few years have attempted to elucidate its natural history and ideal treatment. The modified Dunn procedure is one of its most widely accepted treatment options. However, the development of avascular necrosis (AVN) remains an issue of great concern. The main aim of this study was to identify the relationship between slip stability and the development of AVN after surgical hip dislocation through the modified Dunn procedure. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted according to the PR

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip pathology occurring in pediatrics and adolescents, and its management is well documented in the literature regardless of its severity. In patients presenting with unilateral SCFE, the incidence of subsequent contralateral slip (SCS) is variable among studies, and the issue of contralateral hip prophylactic fixation (CHPF) becomes a concern. The fundamental rationale behind performing CHPF is to avoid the subsequent contralateral slip, which consequently lowers the risk of femoral head avascular necrosis and chondrolysis. However, prophyl

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a pediatric hip disorder affecting roughly 1 in 10,000 children and adolescents, with delayed diagnosis and treatment leading to poor outcomes. This study compares the association between presenting hip or knee pain symptomatology and its effects on time to diagnosis and treatment of SCFE, mid- to long-term complications, and risk of requiring hip reconstructive surgeries.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted comparing SCFE presentations with chief complaints of either hip or knee pain that led to SCFE surgery. Propensity

CASE: We report a 15-year-old boy with primary hyperparathyroidism and hypercalcemia, caused by a parathyroid adenoma, identified during evaluation for slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFEs). Atypical SCFE presentation, including late pubertal presentation, nephrolithiasis, and normal BMI, prompted metabolic investigation. Hypercalcemia was managed with fluids, calcitonin, pamidronate, and cinacalcet, followed by parathyroidectomy and SCFE surgery, leading to normalized calcium levels.
CONCLUSION: This case highlights the importance of metabolic evaluation in SCFE patients with an atypical

BACKGROUND: The modified Dunn procedure, which is based on the development of an extended retinacular flap containing the blood supply for the femoral head, allows anatomic reestablishment in patients with moderate to severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Some controversy exists regarding the short-term to midterm risk of avascular necrosis (AVN) and other complications resulting from the surgical technique.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What percentage of patients treated with an extended retinacular flap during the modified Dunn procedure for SCFE with a moderate (slip angle from 30° t
