Simultaneous Monteggia injuries of the elbow and ipsilateral fracture distal radius with epiphyseal injury both bone are a unique case. A unique case of a Type I Monteggia fracture equivalent with ipsilateral fracture distal radius with epiphyseal injury (Salter-Harris Type II) in a child is reported. We describe the management of this unique fracture and discuss the possible mechanism of injury. We have highlighted a rare combination of injuries. Early recognition and prompt surgical intervention can lead to a satisfactory outcome even in these complex injuries. Résumé Les traumatismes de Mon

Orofacial injuries are common in sports activities and may vary in complexity and the tissues involved. Most sports-related trauma occurs when a player hits another player, an object or the ground. This report presents a case of an injury caused by a punchlike blow to the face during a handball college team practice session. The patient suffered a traumatic blow to the left side of the nose and mouth and promptly attended a dentist. After a clinical examination and a CBCT scan, the following injuries were diagnosed: upper lip laceration, upper left lateral incisor subluxation and anterior nasa

BACKGROUND: Pedicle screw fixation of the lumbar spine in children age <2 years is particularly challenging, as successful cannulation of the small pedicle dimensions requires a high level of precision and there are no implants specifically designed for the infant spine. Image-guided navigation is commonly used in adult spinal surgery and may be particularly helpful for the placement of spinal screws in areas where the bony anatomy is small and/or anatomically complex, as in the upper cervical area.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 19-month-old female presented with a fracture-dislocation injury of L1-2.

A simultaneous odontoid decompression and bilateral posterior atlanto-axial facetal distraction, C1-2 joint spacer/bone graft placement and stabilization may be performed utilizing the 'posterior-only' approach. This procedure may be performed utilizing a single posterior midline incision, a bilateral posterior approach to the C1-2 facet joints and a bilateral posterolateral approach to the odontoid process and C2 body. It may be carried out in situations where a C1-2 non-reduction/partial reduction using a 'posterior alone' procedure is anticipated due to the complex bony/soft tissue configur

OBJECTIVES: Surgical treatment of irreducible atlantoaxial dislocation (IAAD) with basilar invagination (BI) is associated with high rates of severe complications, including mortality. This retrospective study investigated the safety and efficacy of progressive halo-vest traction for IAAD with BI prior to posterior occipitocervical instrumented fusion.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2009 and 2013, 39 patients with IAAD with BI underwent preoperative reduction by progressive halo-vest traction for 20.82±4.21days. Instrumented fusion was then performed through a posterior approach. Clinical outc

Fractures and dislocations with complete lateral displacement of the spine at the lumbar and thoracic levels are some of the most severe types of thoracolumbar trauma. They are usually caused by high-energy trauma and accompanied by extreme, life-threatening injuries and neurological deficits that vary in severity, which may delay operative intervention. It is often difficult to reduce such a complex fracture-dislocation because of the force that the muscles exert on the bone and the injured part of the spinal cord. No absolute guidelines for reduction, fixation, decompression, and fusion of t

This case report describes a patient who presented with myelopathy secondary to a large retro-odontoid post traumatic cicatrix. The objective of this study was to discuss the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, imaging, and surgical management of pseudoarthrosis tissue mass associated with odontoid nonunion. Atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS) has been widely reported in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. AAS leads to repeated cycles of partial tear and repair of ligaments around the altantoaxial complex, resulting in the formation of periodontoid mass (pseudotumor). It is thought that formation

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Inaccurate osteotomy cut along with incomplete or even subluxated bone-on-bone closure of osteotomy gap following pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) may be disastrous, hampering the lordosing effect and increasing the likelihood of complications. The inelastic yet osteoporotic spine in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is specially predisposed to such suboptimal osteotomy, while the relevant data concerning this issue are scarce.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the incidence of radiological morphology variances (RMV) of osteotomized vertebra-disc complex (OVDC) following P

RATIONALE: Traumatic C1-2 dislocation associated with contiguous or noncontiguous cervical spine injury is rare. Moreover, there have been no reports describing traumatic C1-2 dislocation associated with multiple contiguous and noncontiguous cervical injuries.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The authors present a case of a 20-year-old male with painful limitation of motion of the neck. This complex cervical injury occurred due to hyperextension of the head in a rotated position. The patient complained of neck pain that radiated to the left shoulder and arm, but he did not exhibit any neurological abnormali

Background The odontoid process and the transverse ligament are the most important structures stabilising the atlantoaxial complex. It has not been fully elucidated how injuries of these structures contribute towards instability and a potential narrowing of the spinal canal. Therefore, our investigation aimed to perform a biomechanical analysis of spinal width and dislocation of the odontoid process depending on injuries of the aforementioned structures. Methods In 10 fresh human cadaveric specimens, physiologic flexion and extension were simulated under fluoroscopy in intact specimens and aft

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare monogenic disorder characterized by benign tumors in multiple organs as well as a high prevalence of epilepsy, intellectual disability and autism. TSC is caused by inactivating mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes. Heterozygocity induces hyperactivation of mTOR which can be inhibited by mTOR inhibitors, such as rapamycin, which have proven efficacy in the treatment of TSC-associated symptoms. The aim of the present study was (1) to identify molecular changes associated with social and cognitive deficits in the brain tissue of Tsc1+/- mice a

Chiropractors commonly treat children for a variety of ailments by manipulating the spine to correct a 'vertebral subluxation' or a 'vertebral subluxation complex' alleged to be a cause of disease. Such treatment might begin soon after a child is born. Both major American chiropractic associations - the International Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association - support chiropractic care for children, which includes subluxation correction as a treatment or preventive measure. I do not know of any credible evidence to support chiropractic subluxation theory. Any attempt t

PURPOSE: The AOSpine thoracolumbar (TL) spine injury classification system is based mainly on computed tomography (CT). The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of CT scan in the diagnosis of posterior ligamentous complex (PLC) injury in thoracolumbar spine trauma (TLST).
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 43 patients with TLST. CT scans were evaluated independently by three spine surgeons on two separate occasions, 2 months apart. The reliability of PLC injury parameters was assessed by the Kappa coefficient (κ) and the average percentage of these paramete

AIM OF THE STUDY: to gather clinical and laboratory data on rheumatoid arthritis patients with cervical spine damage (incidence and prevalence, correlation between duration of disease and the time of lesion onset, to assess signs and symptoms and the role of laboratory investigations). The spine is an axial organ with an important role in support and resistance. It is a pillar with a very complex morphological and functional structure. The vertebral column is crossed by many kinematic chains. The main problem of the cervical spine caused by rheumatoid arthritis is cervical instability which de

Rollover car accidents can be the result of forceful steering or hitting an obstacle that acts like a ramp. Mortality from this type of car accident is particularly high, especially when occupants are thrown out of the vehicle. We report a case of a 67-year-old man who died after a rollover accident that occurred when he was driving a car equipped with a glass moonroof. He was found inside his car with his safety belt correctly fastened and the roof shattered. At autopsy, a wide avulsion injury of the head was observed, which was associated with an atlanto-axial dislocation and full-thickness

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of degenerative hip disease and spinal pathology is not uncommon with the number of surgical treatments performed for each condition increasing annually. The limited research available suggests spinal pathology portends less pain relief and worse outcomes after total hip arthroplasty (THA). We hypothesize that primary THA patients with preexisting lumbar spinal fusions (LSF) experience worse early postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective matched cohort study. Primary THA patients at 1 institution who had undergone prior LSF (spine arthrodesis-
