The association between acute renal disease and infection has been known since the mid '800s: acute post-infectious glomerulonephritis (PIGN) is a reactive immunological process against the kidney secondary to an infection, classically caused by a Streptococcus. The typical clinical presentation of PIGN is an acute nephritic syndrome with macro- or microscopic hematuria, proteinuria, hypertension, edema and renal function impairment of variable degree. The histology is characterized by an intracapillary glomerular proliferation, but may rarely be associated with an extracapillary proliferation

Recent data regarding the clinical and histopathologic spectrum of crescentic glomerulonephritis (CSGN) among the Indian adult population is unknown. Our aim is to study the clinicopathological features and outcome of CSGN. It is a retrospective observational study from a tertiary care hospital in India over 3.5 years. Biopsy-proven cases of CSGN (i.e., >50% crescents in glomeruli) were included in the study. Cases with insufficient data were excluded. There were 34 cases of CSGN, accounting for an incidence of 5.5% among kidney biopsies. The mean age was 32.2 ± 16.09 years, with male to femal

INTRODUCTION: Acute post streptococcal glomerulo-nephritis (APSGN) is a form of acute nephritic syndrome characterized by edema, hematuria, proteinuria, and hypertension. The immediate prognosis of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis in children is usually excellent, however, the long-term prognosis has been a subject of debate.
METHODS: This is a retrospective and prospective cohort study of Sudanese children with APSGN followed in a tertiary care hospital between 2006 and 2010. Patients who presented for follow-up 1-5 years after initial diagnosis were assessed for proteinuria, hema

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome is a clinical radiographic syndrome of heterogeneous etiologies. Developing hypertensive encephalopathy following post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is a known but uncommon manifestation and developing posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in such a situation is very rare. We report a case with contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in the background of acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

Gemcitabine is a widely used drug in the treatment of advanced pancreatic cancer and other malignancies. It is generally well tolerated and exceptionally its use has been associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome, causing acute kidney injury, hypertension, chronic renal failure requiring dialysis, and death. We report a 60-year-old man with pancreatic carcinoma and regional lymph node invasion, whom after four months of therapy with gemcitabine and after dose number 11, suddenly developed an acute nephritic syndrome with moderate renal impairment, associated with severe anemia (hemoglobin 6.0

Acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis are defined by an acute nonsuppurative inflammatory insult predominantly glomerular. Its current incidence is uncertain because of the frequency of subclinical forms. The most common infectious agent involved is beta hemolytic streptococcus group A. Acute postinfectious glomerulonephritis is uncommon in adults, and its incidence is progressively declining in developed countries. Humoral immunity plays a key role in the pathogenesis of kidney damage. Complement activation by the alternative pathway is the dominant mechanism, but a third way (lectin pathwa

A spectrum of kidney diseases in HIV-infected patients has been reported both before and after the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Kidney syndromes affecting HIV-infected patients include CKD as well as proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, and acute nephritic syndrome. Thrombotic microangiopathy should be considered in patients with kidney disease and typical clinical characteristics. As the HIV-infected population ages, there is increased concern regarding the incidence of vascular and metabolic disease, leading to an increased burden of CKD. Although HIV-associated

INTRODUCTION: Risk factors of renal involvement in Henoch-Schonlein nephritis (HSN) have been extensively studied, but their relations with the severity of glomerular lesions at the disease onset are much less known.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively on 45 patients (age range, 2 to 15 years) with HSN to identify the initial clinical and laboratory features that most accurately correlate with histological findings. Nephritic syndrome was defined as hypertension, proteinuria, hematuria, and a creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or less. Kidney biopsy findings were
