The health and economic repercussions of declining MMR coverage in the United States.

The resurgence of measles in the United States, driven by declining childhood vaccination coverage, poses a substantial public health and economic threat. Using county-level Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine coverage data and spatial incidence models, we quantified the economic burden of measles in 2025 and projected the impact of continued declines in vaccine uptake. In 2025, the estimated cost per measles case was $104,629 [50% high-density interval (HDI): $100,729 to $110,140], yielding a national burden of $244.2 million (50% HDI: $69.9 to $872.5 million). The cost per case varied widely

Sex- and age-specific transmission pathways of mumps: a mechanistic SEPIAR modeling study in Chengdu, China (2008-2019).

INTRODUCTION: Despite widespread mumps vaccination, recurrent outbreaks persist globally, underscoring the need to clarify sex- and age-specific transmission mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study characterizes mumps epidemiology in Chengdu (2008-2019) and quantifies sex- and age-specific transmission pathways using a mechanistic modeling framework. METHODS: A sex- and age-structured Susceptible-Exposed-Pre-symptomatic-Symptomatic-Asymptomatic-Recovered (SEPIAR) model incorporating seasonal forcing was developed to estimate time-varying reproduction numbers (Rt) across 64 transmission pathways.

MMR vaccine hesitancy in a polarized information ecosystem: Results from a cross-sectional survey of US adults.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize MMR vaccine hesitancy in US adults amid the 2025 measles outbreaks, with specific focus on the role of an individual's media habits. METHODS: We conducted an online panel survey in August 2025, with 2970 US-based, English-speaking adults (≥18 yrs). We conducted bivariate analyses with chi-square tests to characterize differences between hesitant and non-hesitant adults. We used logistic regression modeling to identify factors associated with MMR hesitancy. RESULTS: Overall, 17% (n = 501) of adults believed the risks of MMR outweighed the benefits. Most adults enga

Evaluation of Mumps-specific Neutralizing Antibody Compared to Immunoglobulin G Antibody in Japanese Children After the Coronavirus Disease Pandemic.

Mumps vaccination, which is routinely administered in many countries, is not covered by Japan's national immunization program. Therefore, mumps epidemic occurs every 3 or 4 years in Japan due to a low vaccine coverage rate. To prepare for the next resurgence, we examined the immunity against mumps using neutralizing antibodies (NT) against vaccine strain (genotype B) and wildtype virus (genotype G), and mumps-specific enzyme immunoassay for immunoglobulin G (IgG). We enrolled 83 children admitted to the Kawasaki Medical Hospital for diseases other than mumps between April and December 2022. Th

Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy in Louisiana Through Social Media Listening and Community Feedback: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The rise of social media has significantly impacted public health programs, with platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and, more recently, TikTok being used to promote health information, raise awareness about disease outbreaks, and support disease prevention programs. However, the diverse and often unverified nature of the content on social media can make it challenging to discern accurate information, contributing to user uncertainty, which may in turn contribute to low vaccination rates in some regions. This is especially true in Louisian

Paracetamol in pregnancy: Navigating clinical uncertainty and avoiding the communication pitfalls of the "measles, mumps, and rubella" - autism controversy: A narrative review.

On September 22, 2025, the United States government announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would modify paracetamol (acetaminophen) labelling to warn of possible associations with autism, advising pregnant individuals to avoid the medication. This contradicts professional medical consensus and high-quality evidence, replicating communication failures of the 1998 MMR-autism controversy that caused vaccine hesitancy, disease outbreaks, and trust erosion. This narrative review synthesized epidemiological evidence on paracetamol safety in pregnancy, analyzed the September 2025 annou

Mixed exposure to brominated flame retardants adversely affects vaccine-induced antibody titers: Risk prioritization and benchmark dose modeling.

The association between brominated flame retardant (BFRs) exposure and measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR) antibody responses was investigated using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-2004). Using multivariate linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) model, we found significant inverse association between single BFR exposure (BB-153 and BDE-100) and mumps antibody levels (P < 0.05). Mixed BFR exposure synergistically reduced antibody levels across mumps and rubella vaccines, with BB-153 identified as the dominant contributor for mumps (PIP = 0.460). Ben

Vaccine Adverse Effects: An Overview.

Vaccines are one of the most successful medical advances in modern times. Patients are increasingly questioning the necessity of immunizing themselves and their families, and family physicians should be aware of the risks and benefits of recommended immunizations to accurately counsel about adverse effects and address vaccine hesitancy. Vaccines are associated with local adverse reactions, such as pain and redness. Thimerosal is currently used only in multidose vials of influenza vaccine; exposure to thimerosal through vaccines is not associated with adverse neurologic outcomes. The measles-mu

Viral orchitis and male infertility: A comprehensive review of pathogenic mechanisms and outcomes.

Male reproductive tract infections and inflammations are recognized as significant aetiological contributors of infertility. Orchitis and epididymo-orchitis caused by systemic or local infection, as well as non-infectious aetiological causes, are of special concern with respect to their effect on male reproductive function. Male fertility can be affected by various microorganisms especially viruses. Viruses like HIV and mumps can target testicular cells, result in orchitis. This inflammation of the testes can impair fertility and, in some cases, increase the risk of developing testicular cance

Measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccination status in international paediatric travellers seen for pre-travel consultation in Minnesota, USA.

BACKGROUND: Between 2000 and 2024, unvaccinated international travellers were the source of most measles cases and outbreaks in the U.S. In Minnesota, the Somali-American community is particularly high-risk for measles due to low measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccination uptake. We assessed MMR vaccine status in international paediatric travellers in Minnesota. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of MMR status among paediatric travellers age 6 months to < 18 years seen for pre-travel consultation from 1 October 2015 to 31 December 2024 at 3 community-based travel clinics within a larg

Non-medical exemptions and state-level variation in kindergarten MMR vaccination coverage, United States, 2016-2024.

BACKGROUND: High kindergarten vaccination coverage is essential to sustain herd immunity against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. In recent years, rising state-level non-medical exemption rates and pandemic-related disruptions have threatened this protection in the United States. METHODS: We analyzed 8 years of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) kindergarten vaccination surveillance data (2016-2017 through 2023-2024) to assess national and state-level trends in vaccination coverage and exemption rates. Descriptive analyses and scatterplots were used to examine pat

Combination Vaccines in Routine Childhood Immunization Programs - Worldwide, 2024.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Combination vaccines enhance health system efficiency and caregiver compliance by reducing the number of clinic visits and injections required for routine childhood immunization. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: In 2024, eight types of combination vaccines were in use worldwide, grouped into two categories: diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP)-containing vaccines (trivalent, quadrivalent, pentavalent, and hexavalent) and measles-containing vaccines (two bivalent types, trivalent, and quadrivalent). Pentavalent DTP-containing vaccines and measles-mumps-rube

Partisan differences in childhood measles vaccination and general refusals: a retrospective cohort study of electronic health records in the United States, 1988-2024.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination remains one of the most effective public health tools globally. Yet recent years have seen increasing political polarization around vaccination, particularly in the United States, as well as measles outbreaks among unvaccinated children. Using individual-level data, we characterize the national evolution of parental political polarization in childhood vaccination refusal, timely receipt of a child's first measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) dose, and delay in first MMR vaccination. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, using electronic health records from a primar
