Safety of live vaccines is questioned in children with inflammatory bowel diseases and after liver transplantation receiving immunosuppressive therapy. The objective was to monitor the immunogenicity and safety of attenuated live vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) in children receiving immunosuppressive therapy. In this prospective multicenter observational study (DRKS00014569) 22 children and adolescents with incomplete MMR vaccination status were identified. Following individual assessment of vaccination readiness with stable immunosuppressive therapy in the last three months

Mumps is a vaccine-preventable disease caused by the mumps virus, mainly affecting the salivary glands. It can cause serious complications, including mumps encephalitis. Despite widespread immunization practices, mumps outbreaks persist among both vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, raising issues of concern regarding herd immunity. Mumps encephalitis, although rare, can produce serious complications warranting prompt diagnosis and management. Here, in this case report, we present a five-year-old girl who presented with fever, bilateral parotid swelling, and a single episode of abnormal m

Rubella is typically a mild viral illness, but it can lead to severe complications when contracted during pregnancy, such as pregnancy loss or developmental defects in the fetus (congenital rubella syndrome). Therefore, it is crucial to develop and maintain protective immunity in women of childbearing age. In this study, we assessed the transcriptional factors associated with rubella-specific immune outcomes (IgG binding antibody and avidity, neutralizing antibody, and memory B cell ELISpot response) following a third MMR vaccine dose in women of reproductive age to identify key factors/signat

Invasive fungal infections (IFIs), including aspergillosis and mucormycosis, are serious complications in cancer patients. Reliable detection of etiologic agents is challenging but important for optimal patient management. In a prospective multicenter study, we compared fungal detection by culture, specific and unspecific qPCRs, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting Aspergillus and Mucorales in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum of adult cancer patients with suspected fungal pneumonia. In subgroups of patients, fungal DNA was amplified from serum. We evaluated 210

Background Measles, mumps, and rubella continue to cause outbreaks and serious complications in many regions. Routine childhood vaccination is the most effective strategy for preventing these infections. Multiple MMR vaccines are used in India, including both domestic and international formulations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of the ZyVac MMR vaccine (Zydus Lifesciences Ltd., Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India) administered during routine paediatric practice. Methods This retrospective post-marketing safety study was conducted across nine paediatric centres

IMPORTANCE: Widespread childhood vaccination has eliminated many infectious diseases in the US. However, vaccination rates are declining, and there are ongoing policy debates to reduce the childhood vaccine schedule, which may risk reemergence of previously eliminated infectious diseases.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the number of cases and complications in the US under scenarios of declining childhood vaccination for measles, rubella, poliomyelitis, and diphtheria.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A simulation model was used to assess the importation and dynamic spread of vaccine-preventable in

BACKGROUND: Cancer, a condition marked by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, remains a major global health concern and is the second most common cause of death worldwide. Both the disease itself and its treatments can negatively impact taste, smell, appetite, and nutrient absorption, increasing the risk of malnutrition. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with undernutrition among adult cancer patients, with the goal of identifying key characteristics that could inform targeted interventions to address nutritional challenges in this population.

Despite intensive characterization of immune responses after COVID-19 infection and vaccination, research examining protective correlates of vertical transmission in pregnancy are limited. Herein, we profiled humoral and cellular characteristics in pregnant women infected or vaccinated at different trimesters and in their corresponding newborns. We noted a significant correlation between spike S1-specific IgG antibody and its RBD-ACE2 blocking activity (receptor-binding domain-human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) in maternal and cord plasma (P < .001, R > 0.90). Blocking activity of spike S1

Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with reversible splenial lesion (MERS) is characterized by mild neurological manifestations associated with spontaneously reversible lesions of the splenium of the corpus callosum. While various conditions and diseases can trigger MERS, infectious causes predominate, with mumps being notably linked to MERS in the pediatric population. Although rare in adults, there are sporadic case reports associating mumps with MERS. Here we report a 23-year-old male patient with a typical presentation of mumps who presented with meningeal syndrome, dizziness, seizures, and r

INTRODUCTION: Retropharyngeal abscess is a fatal infection that is uncommon, yet serious, especially in young children below 5 years. Oropharyngeal infections, in particular, can cause it as a complication of upper respiratory infections. They can also lead to respiratory depression and acute upper airway blockage and other complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: The unusual case of large retropharyngeal abscess in a 2-year-old child, secondary to mumps infection who presented to us with impending airway compromise is reported.
DISCUSSION: Retropharyngeal abscess secondary to mumps is a rare occur

Concurrent global increase of prevalence of obesity and male fertility implies link between overweight and obesity with male subfertility. This hypothesis is supported by numerous population-based epidemiological studies. Increase in body mass index (BMI) is associated with poor sperm quality in fertile, and more noticeable in infertile men. Nevertheless, some studies disprove damaging effect of BMI on semen quality. To examine the influence of men's BMI in infertile couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) on semen analysis parameters and IVF outcomes. Study encompassed all couples who

Transient acute sialadenitis after anesthesia, also known as "anesthesia mumps," is a rare phenomenon reported after surgery, typically associated with extensive surgeries. It is a complication that is usually self-resolving but, in rare cases, may lead to airway obstruction. The most common associated causes include dehydration, components of anesthesia, duct obstruction due to positioning, and external compression, among others. Here, we present the case of bilateral parotitis after an elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a 76-year-old male.

OBJECTIVE: The scarcity of studies on vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) limits the comprehensive understanding of vaccine safety on a global scale. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the global burden of vaccine-induced TTS, identify the vaccines most associated with it, and suggest clinical implications regarding vaccination.
METHODS: This study employed the World Health Organization international pharmacovigilance database, extracting records of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia from 1969 to 2023 (total reports, n > 130 million)

Recently, live-attenuated measles, rubella, varicella, and mumps vaccines have been administered to carefully selected post-liver transplant patients. Although attention has been focused on post-vaccination antibody titers and adverse events, the real-life clinical benefits remain unclear. A comprehensive analysis of breakthrough infections and natural boosters (asymptomatic cases with significant elevation in virus antibody titers) following immunization post-liver transplantation was conducted from 2002-2023, exploring the timing, frequency, correlation with domestic outbreaks, and degree of

Obsessive‑compulsive disorder (OCD) is a current topic of discussion nowadays. OCD presents a variety of different etiologies including environmental, viral, cognitive, or genetic aspects. In this article, we focused on the possible correlation between various infectious diseases as well as generally the relationship between viruses, bacteria, and parasites, and an increased OCD risk. In this narrative review, we analyzed different types of articles found on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, as well as the articles of the National Institute of Mental Health. Searching criteria included artic
