PURPOSE: Identifying factors that affect recovery or restoration of neurological function is a key goal of rehabilitation in neurology and ophthalmology. One such factor can be prolonged mental stress, which may be not only the consequence of nervous system damage but also a major risk factor, or cause, of neural inactivation. Using the visual system as a model of neural injury, we wished to study how patients' stress and personality profiles correlate with vision recovery as induced by therapy with alternating current stimulation (ACS) in patients with optic nerve damage.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by the development of autoantibodies against multiple antigens, including complement C1q, starter molecule of the classical pathway. Anti-C1q autoantibodies (anti-C1q) are not only a biomarker of disease activity but believed to contribute to the pathogenesis of proliferative lupus nephritis. Previous studies demonstrated that a key immunogenic site of C1q (so-called 'A08') shares an identical sequence with Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV) Nuclear antigen-1, and that anti-C1q can be induced by this EB

To investigate associations between (human leukocyte antigen) HLA alleles and overall lupus nephritis (LN) susceptibility, biopsy-defined histologic classes and reduced renal function in Taiwanese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We conducted a retrospective case-control study using data from the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative. The matched cohort included 388 SLE patients with biopsy-confirmed LN and 381 SLE patients without LN. HLA alleles were imputed from single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array data using HIBAG. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to eva

Serum sialic acid binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-1 (sSIGLEC-1) is a type I interferon-associated biomarker previously linked to lupus nephritis (LN) in European ancestry populations, but its utility in non-European cohorts remains poorly defined. This study aimed to validate the association of sSIGLEC-1 with LN in Egyptian SLE patients (non-European ancestry) and to test its correlation with world health organization (WHO) pathological classes, chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages, systemic lupus international collaborating clinics-renal activity score (SLICC-RAS), systemic lupus erythemato

Despite growing evidence of their limitations, race-based practices in pediatric rheumatology-those that rely on race or ethnicity to influence diagnosis and treatment-continue to shape care, often reinforcing health disparities. The assumption that biologic or genetic differences exist between racial groups oversimplifies complex health issues and perpetuates health inequities. This article examines persistent race-based practices in pediatric rheumatology, particularly in the interpretation of laboratory results and clinical decision-making, and highlights their clinical limitations. BACKGROUND: The 12-lipoxygenase (12-LOX)/12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (12-HETE) pathway is associated with various tumors. M2 macrophages in the tumor microenvironment promote tumorigenesis and progression. However, the role of the 12-LOX/12-HETE/G protein-coupled receptor 31 (GPR31) metabolic pathway and its relationship with M2 macrophages remains unclear in pancreatic cancer (PC).
METHODS: The expression levels of 12-LOX, GPR31, and 12-HETE were detected in PC and mouse PC models using western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). In vivo and in vitro experiments were con

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the effectiveness of dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, on renal function in patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases complicated by chronic kidney disease (CKD).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal disease and chronic kidney disease who were treated with dapagliflozin for more than a year. The good response was defined as an improvement in the estimated glomerular filtration rate slope per year after dapagliflozin treatment compared to that before treatment. Additionally, we investi

OBJECTIVES: Proteinuria is a marker of lupus nephritis (LN) activity and damage. We aimed to explore the impact of baseline proteinuria level on long-term outcomes.
METHODS: We included 249 patients diagnosed with their first biopsy-proven LN. We divided patients based on baseline proteinuria into low-level (≤1 g/day, group 1; 62 patients), moderate-level (>1 and <3 g/day, group 2; 90 patients) and high-level proteinuria (≥3 g/day, group 3; 97 patients). Outcomes included complete proteinuria recovery (CPR) at 1 year, an adverse composite outcome (ESKD, a sustained ≥40% decline in eGFR, or de

OBJECTIVES: The most important renal complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). Many patients demonstrate less severe renal complications, most likely associated with reduced renal blood flow and a consequent reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The mechanism of this slowly progressive form of chronic renal disease is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate GFR by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) and the 7-variable Modification of Diet and Renal Disease (MDRD) equations in SSc patients and to correlate estimated G

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with a number of immunological aberrations in the mechanisms of innate and adaptive immune responses. Spontaneous and induced mouse models of the disease have contributed significantly to the advancement in lupus treatments. The involvement of humanized models, engrafted with lupus patients' immune cells, represented the possibility to study the development of SLE. In the current research, we engrafted NSG/Rag2-γc- mice with PBMCs from lupus patients and put the mice on specific diet composed of extra amounts of methyl-containi

OBJECTIVE: Both belimumab and telitacicept are recognised blockers for B lymphocyte activation, both of which have been approved as add-on therapies for SLE in China. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of rituximab (RTX) followed by belimumab or telitacicept in a real-world cohort.
METHODS: A total of 49 refractory lupus nephritis patients were enrolled from four independent centres, subsequently categorised into two treatment groups: belimumab group (n=35) and telitacicept group (n=14) based on their treatment following RTX. The outcomes of renal response rates were evaluated.

Collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) has a severe course typically associated with viral infections, especially HIV and parvovirus B19, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), among other etiologies. A 35-year-old woman with recent use of a JAK inhibitor due to rheumatoid arthritis presented with a 2-week history of fever, cervical adenopathy, and facial erythema. After admission, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, proteinuria, and severe acute kidney injury were noted. SLE was diagnosed and parvovirus B19 DNA was detected in serum samples. Kidney biopsy showed CG without any typical features of lupus nephritis.

The development of lupus nephritis (LN) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Proteinuria is a key indicator of kidney involvement; detecting and monitoring proteinuria is therefore crucial as it acts as a surrogate marker for disease activity and has significant prognostic value. This review explores the general mechanisms of proteinuria and highlights the limitations of current measurement techniques. In the absence of specific urinary markers for LN disease activity, evaluating proteinuria involves considering its trajectory, amp
