New species of Isospora from the blue-crowned motmot (Momotus momota) from Costa Rica.

Two (33.3%) of 6 blue-crowned motmots (Momotus momota) sampled from Costa Rica were positive for a new species of Isospora. Oocysts of Isospora momotana n. sp. have a double, thick, yellow to orange, 2.3 microm +/- 0.5 microm (2-3 microm) wall, contain 1 to 3 globular polar granules (1-4 microm), are ovoid with heavy pitting on the outer surface, and measure 29.4 +/- 2.3 x 27.5 +/- 2.3 (25-33 x 23-31) with an average length:width ratio of 1.1 (1.0-1.35). Sporocysts are ovoid, contain a residuum composed of large, equal-sized granules, and measure 19.4 +/- 1.3 x 12.2 +/- 1.1 (16-22 x 10-14) wit

Validity of Isospora lacazei (Labbé, 1893) infecting the house sparrow, Passer domesticus (L.), in Saudi Arabia.

Isospora lacazei was described from large number of passeriform birds including house sparrow (Passer domesticus). It was not certain whether all described species under this name belong to the same species. Also, two other species (Isospora passeris and Isospora passerum) were identified from P. domesticus depending on variation of oocyst measurements. During the present study, the Isospora species was reported from house sparrow (P. domesticus) in Saudi Arabia. The oocyst measurement ranges cover all the ranges of the previously described Isospora species from P. domesticus. Therefore, the p

Age, not infection dose, determines the outcome of Isospora suis infections in suckling piglets.

Data from 13 trials involving 124 suckling piglets experimentally infected with Isospora suis were evaluated for the effects of infection dose and age on the clinical and parasitological outcome of infection in four different models, infections with 1,000 oocysts on the 1(st) day of life (d.o.l.) (model 1; 9 piglets/3 litters), 1,000 oocysts on the 4(th) d.o.l. (model 2; 25 piglets/11 litters), 1,500 oocysts on the 4(th) d.o.l. (model 3; 40 piglets/20 litters) and 10,000 oocysts on the 4(th) d.o.l. (model 4; 50 animals/10 litters). Weights were determined on the day of birth and in weekly inte

Common protozoans as an uncommon cause of respiratory ailments in HIV-associated immunodeficiency.

Opportunistic infections (OIs) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity among HIV-positive subjects. The breadth of reports of the rare occurrence of OIs in HIV/AIDS has been increasing over the years and more recent studies have outlined the changing trends in the emergence of newer pathogens. Recent reports of the association of certain protozoans that normally do not infect sites other than their normal sites of localization have generated huge interest among scientists. The complete depression of the immune system, followed by the onset of OIs, especially due to protozoans, i.e. to

Isospora belli infection after isolated intestinal transplant.

Isospora belli is a protozoan that only affects humans, after ingestion of Isospora's oocysts. Immunocompetent patients usually do not develop the infection. Immunocompromised hosts may have profuse diarrhea with other gastrointestinal symptoms. Treatment is based on trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. In 2006 we performed an isolated intestinal transplantation in a patient with ultra-short bowel syndrome. Neither rejection nor clinical problems occurred after transplant, but signs of intestinal inflammation were seen in every protocol biopsy starting at the first month post transplant. Almost 3 mo

Severe diarrhea due to Isospora belli in a patient with thymoma.

Opportunistic isosporidial infection of the gastrointestinal tract is frequently encountered in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and is considered to be an AIDS-defining illness. Chronic severe watery diarrhea due to Isospora belli has also been reported in other immunodeficiency states. This report describes severe chronic debilitating diarrhea due to isosporiasis in a patient with mediastinal thymoma, a common tumor of the anterior mediastinum, originating from the epithelial cells of the thymus. Numerous oocysts of I. belli were detected in direct smear preparation of

Isosporiasis in patients with HIV infection in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era in France.

BACKGROUND: Isosporiasis, a rare cause of diarrhoea among HIV-infected patients in the pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, seems to be re-emerging. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out for the period 1995-2003 in two hospitals in Paris to describe the prevalence, clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcome of isosporiasis in HIV-infected patients, and to compare the findings with those for cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis. RESULTS: The prevalence of isosporiasis increased from 0.4 per 1000 patients in the pre-HAART era (1995-1996) to 4.4 per 1000 patien

Survival of Isospora suis oocysts under controlled environmental conditions.

Isospora suis is a coccidian parasite infecting piglets soon after birth. While the gross epidemiology of I. suis is well known, little knowledge exists on the ecology of the oocysts. To study the development and survival of oocysts of I. suis under controlled laboratory conditions, known numbers of oocysts ( approximately 200 in each of 4 replicates) were exposed to all combinations of 4 relative humidities (53-100% RH) and 3 temperatures (20 degrees , 25 degrees , 30 degrees C). Determination of viability was based on morphological and fluorescent properties of the oocyst as well as on the p

Isospora orlovi infection in suckling dromedary camel calves (Camelus dromedarius) in Kenya.

Outbreaks of isosporosis in young suckling dromedary camel calves (Camelus dromedarius) in Dubai, UAE and in Kenya were recently described. In the former outbreak the pathogen was shown to be Isospora orlovi by morphological features and was later characterized molecularly. In the present study, we have made a longitudinal investigation of 159 suckling dromedary calves < or =12 weeks of age belonging to 8 ranched camel herds (M1) in Northern Kenya. The study was carried out during 18 months. In three of the herds frequent samples were taken irregularly every 1-6 weeks. All calves < or =12 week

Real-time polymerase chain reaction for detection of Isospora belli in stool samples.

A real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting the internal transcribed spacer 2 region of the ribosomal RNA gene was developed for the detection of Isospora belli DNA in fecal samples, including an internal control to detect inhibition during the amplification process. The assay was performed on species-specific DNA controls (n = 27) and a range of positive (n = 21) and negative (n = 120) stool samples, and achieved 100% specificity and sensitivity. The simple fecal sample collection procedure, the high-throughput potential, and the possibility of quantification makes the I. bell

Proliferative visceral Isospora (atoxoplasmosis) with morbid impact on the Israeli sparrow Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, 1904.

House sparrows (Passer domesticus biblicus Hartert, 1904) caught in the Jordan valley, the coastal plain, and the desert region in Southern Israel were found massively infected with extraintestinal proliferative stages of Isospora, previously named Atoxoplasma. Infection coincided with Isospora spp. infections in the digestive tract. Prevalence of infection reached 70% among sparrows of all three regions; however, only in the Jordan valley did the severity of the sparrows compromised their survival. Healthy appearing captured birds showed symptoms of "going light" syndrome -- diarrhea, emaciat

Molecular identification and prevalence of Isospora sp. in pigs in Western Australia using a PCR-RFLP assay.

Little is known about the prevalence of Isospora in domestic pigs in Western Australia. A total of 289 pig faecal samples were collected from pre- and post-weaned pigs and sows from 1 indoor and 3 outdoor piggeries located in the south-west region of Western Australia. Faecal samples were screened using a PCR-RFLP assay based on the ITS-1 rDNA locus. An overall prevalence of 10.4% (30/289) was identified. Isospora was detected in 16.3% (20/123) of pre-weaned animals and 6.4% (10/156) of post-weaned animals. PCR-RFLP analysis confirmed the presence of Isospora suis in 86.7% of the positive Isos

Modified flotation method with the use of Percoll for the detection of Isospora suis oocysts in suckling piglet faeces.

The modification of flotation method for the examination of diarrhoeic piglet faeces for the detection of Isospora suis oocysts was elaborated. The method was based on removing fractions of fat from the sample of faeces by centrifugation with a 25% Percoll solution. The investigations were carried out in comparison to the McMaster method. From five variants of the Percoll flotation method, the best results were obtained when 2ml of flotation liquid per 1g of faeces were used. The limit of detection in the Percoll flotation method was 160 oocysts per 1g, and was better than with the McMaster me
