Neuroimmune crosstalk in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and the impact of antiretroviral therapy.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remain prevalent among people living with HIV (PLWH) despite effective combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) and durable systemic viral suppression. The central nervous system (CNS) represents a unique immunological and pharmacological compartment in which HIV persists within long-lived reservoirs, particularly microglia and perivascular macrophages, thereby sustaining chronic neuroimmune activation. Current evidence indicates that HAND is driven primarily by indirect mechanisms rather than direct neuronal infection. Persistent viral transcrip

Joint British association for sexual health and HIV/British HIV association guidelines for the sexual and reproductive health of people with HIV 2026.

These guidelines are an update to the 2008 UK guidelines for the management of sexual and reproductive health of people living with HIV. The writing group has followed updated British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) guideline methodology, notably using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system for assessing evidence and making recommendations. We have made significant changes to the recommendations which are summarised below.

Health Care Stigma and HIV/Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Service Uptake Among Cisgender Men and Gender-Diverse Individuals Who Have Sex with Men in Five Asian Countries: Implications for Differentiated Service Delivery.

Health care stigma remains a key barrier to HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, yet its effects may differ across health care systems. We examined associations between health care stigma and HIV/STI prevention service uptake across five Asian countries. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in early 2020 among cisgender men and gender-diverse individuals who have sex with men in Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Outcomes were HIV testing and STI testing in the past 12 months, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation. Anticipated stigma was de

Cytological evaluation of bone marrow in 11 cattle with enzootic bovine leukosis.

As the frequency and significance of bone marrow (BM) infiltration in enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) remain unclear, this study evaluated BM involvement and its relationship with peripheral blood (PB) findings in 11 cattle with EBL using PB evaluation, and BM aspiration cytology. BM infiltration was identified in 5 of 11 (45%) EBL cases based on BM smears. All EBL cases showed circulating atypical lymphocytes, although BM infiltration was not consistently present. Two cases with extreme PB lymphocytosis showed BM infiltration. Cytopenia was variably observed and was most severe in cases with e

Comparison of 2 commercial antibody ELISA kits for identification of high proviral load carrier cattle in strategic control of bovine leukemia virus infection.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV; family Retroviridae, taxon species Deltaretrovirus bovleu) infection poses a serious threat to cattle health, and the strategic identification of high proviral-load (PVL) carriers is essential for disease control. We evaluated 2 commercial ELISA kits for the detection of BLV antibodies and indirect identification of high-PVL cattle (EBL ELISA [Nippon Gene] and Leukosis Serum X2 [Idexx]) using a cross-sectional survey of 155 cattle from 17 farms. Based on our quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) results, we classified tested cattle into non-infected, low-PVL (<400 copie

"Since I got the education, I feel like a kind of warrior": a qualitative study of participant perspectives and preferences about Sauti ya Vijana, a mental health intervention for young people with HIV in Tanzania.

Adolescents and young adults with HIV (AYAWH) face challenges with medication adherence and are at risk of mental health (MH) difficulties. Sauti ya Vijana (SYV, The Voice of Youth) is a co-created, peer-led, group-based MH intervention designed to address these needs. This study aimed to: (1) evaluate how participation in SYV impacted AYAWH's lives in Tanzania and (2) explore AYAWH perspectives and preferences of the intervention. The SYV trial was conducted across four regions of Tanzania. Trial participants randomized to the intervention arm were purposefully recruited for focus group discu

Single-walled carbon nanotube-based Schottky transistor for the detection of human immunodeficiency virus-1 antibodies in human serum.

Label-free electrical biosensors based on field-effect transistors offer considerable potential for rapid biomolecular detection, yet their performance under physiologically relevant ionic-strength conditions remains fundamentally constrained by Debye screening. Here, we present a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-Au Schottky transistor that addresses this limitation by exploiting interfacial Schottky barrier modulation rather than conventional field-effect gating. Uniform SWNT thin films prepared by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique enabled reproducible device fabrication with well-defi

Improving Provider Knowledge and Confidence With HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Prescribing for Black Women: Evaluation of a Synchronous Training Module.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among cisgender women, particularly Black women, remains low in the United States, partly due to limited provider comfort prescribing PrEP. This study evaluated a culturally tailored educational training designed to improve provider knowledge and confidence in prescribing PrEP to Black women at federally qualified health centers. From January 2024 to April 2025, interactive Zoom trainings were conducted at 11 sites in Florida and Illinois. Pre- and post-training assessments measured objective knowledge and self-rated attitudes toward PrEP prescribing. Ch

"I Just Tested So That I Know My Health Status": HIV Testing Motivations and Decision-Making Among Adolescents in Tanzania.

Tanzanian adolescents are vulnerable to HIV and national policy supports HIV testing services (HTS), yet HTS is underutilized by adolescents. This qualitative study explores factors that influence the attitudes and decision-making of Tanzanian adolescents regarding HTS uptake. The VITAA clinical trial tested a school-clinic partnership that offered health check-ups for Tanzanian adolescents with optional HTS. Semistructured interviews (n = 35) were conducted with adolescents (mean age 16) from the VITAA cohort. Thematic qualitative analysis was informed by the Health Belief Model. Most adolesc

An Adapted Intervention Mapping Approach to Scaling Digital HIV Care Through Single-Session Design.

Digital health interventions (DHIs) for HIV prevention have demonstrated feasibility, acceptability, and, to a lesser extent, efficacy, but few have achieved widespread dissemination. We used intervention mapping and single-session design principles to adapt Keep It Up! (KIU!), a CDC-designated best-evidence HIV prevention program originally delivered over 6 months, into a single-session intervention, Keep It Brief! A 13-member expert and community advisory board guided six adaptation steps, prioritizing behavioral outcomes, objectives, and KIU!'s core theoretical determinants. The resulting i

Global spread and evolutionary trajectories of HIV-1 CRF01_AE: Insights from phylogenetic analysis.

HIV-1 circulating recombinant form (CRF) 01_AE has driven major HIV epidemics across Southeast and East Asia for decades, yet the mechanisms underlying its long-term regional spread remain poorly resolved. Using near-complete genome sequences and Bayesian phylogeographic reconstruction, we traced the evolutionary history of CRF01_AE from its origin in Central Africa to its expansion across Asia. Our results uncover a decades-long transmission corridor linking Africa, Thailand, and China, in which CRF01_AE was introduced into Thailand in the early 1980s and subsequently disseminated across Sout

Acción PrEP: A Multi-Method Pilot Design to Assess the Feasibility of Community Co-Designed Implementation Strategies to Advance PrEP Uptake Among Latines in the U.S. South.

INTRODUCTION: Despite systemic inequities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among Latines (a gender-inclusive term for people of Latin American descent, used to promote inclusivity and language justice), clinic-level implementation strategies addressing health equity-related PrEP barriers are underutilized. This multi-method study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of community-co-designed, equity-focused strategies to improve PrEP uptake among Latines in the Southern United States. METHODS: Facilitated by a community-based organization (CBO)/academic partnership, a workgroup

Assessing Fidelity to HIV Index Case Testing Protocols in Malawian Clinical Settings: Results From a Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: HIV index case testing is an evidence-based practice in which health care workers (HCWs) counsel people living with HIV (index clients) to offer HIV testing services to their sexual partners and biological children (contacts). For index case testing to be effective, it is important that index- and contact-client counselling protocols are implemented as intended (fidelity). We evaluated whether a digital training implementation strategy improved HCWs' fidelity to these counselling protocols. METHODS: We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial at health facilities (cluster

Spatial Heterogeneity of Digital HIV/AIDS Stigma in China: Cross-Sectional Ecological Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS stigma remains a major barrier to public health intervention and social inclusion. In China, short-video platforms, such as Douyin, have become important spaces where people living with HIV/AIDS share daily-life narratives and receive public responses. However, little is known about how public responses to these narratives vary geographically, or how regional sociodemographic and epidemiological contexts are associated with digital stigma and support. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the thematic structure, spatial heterogeneity, and macro-level correlates of public

Impact of the war in Ukraine on HIV-1 subtype distribution and antiretroviral resistance in Slovakia, 2022.

The study analyses the prevalence of HIV-1 subtypes and antiretroviral resistance among newly registered HIV-positive individuals in Slovakia in 2022, with a particular focus on the impact of migration caused by the war in Ukraine. A total of 198 cases were confirmed or reconfirmed HIV-positive of whom 109 (55.1%) citizens were from Ukraine, 80 (40.4%) were from Slovakia, and 9 (4.5%) were from other countries. HIV subtyping and resistance testing were performed in 99 patients (50.0% of all newly registered cases). Among 99 analysed patients, HIV-1 subtype B was detected in 51 (51.5%) and non-

Self-care practices of people living with HIV and hypertension or diabetes comorbidities in low-and-middle income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) face a growing burden of hypertension and diabetes comorbidities. Although self-care is essential, limited evidence exists on how patients manage these conditions concurrently within resource-constrained settings. We examined self-care practices among people living with HIV and hypertension or diabetes comorbidities in LMICs and identified treatment burdens related to these practices. Faith-based organisations in providing HIV services within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: To end the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by 2030, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) proposes that 95% of people living with HIV should be diagnosed, 95% of those with a diagnosis should be on treatment, and 95% of those on treatment should achieve viral suppression. To attain these targets, UNAIDS estimates that community-based HIV services should increase from 5% to 30%. Within low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs), faith-based organisations (FBOs) often possess broad societal influence and extensive reach. Thus, many major AIDS organi
