HIV-1 cluster analysis has been widely used in characterizing HIV-1 transmission and some countries have implemented such molecular epidemiology as part of their prevention strategy. However, HIV-1 sequences derive from varying genome regions, which affects phylogenetic clustering outputs. Here, we apply different tools to run a sensitivity analysis for assessing which threshold give the most cohesive clustering outputs for different data sources. We used a dataset of 174 full-length sequences of subtype B from the Swiss HIV Cohort Study and publicly available subtype C from South Africa. Each

On September 1, 2019, China implemented the "Blood Station Technical Operation Procedures (2019 Edition)," specifying Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and Chemiluminescent Immunoassay (CLIA) for serological testing. However, no CLIA HIV reagent has been approved for blood donor screening in China. This study evaluates the WT CMIA reagents for HIV screening in blood stations, providing evidence for their approval as a national screening tool. A controlled trial compared WT CMIA and ELISA reagents, as well as CLIA reagents from other manufacturers, through clinical experiments and refer

With the aging of the population, the number of persons with dementia is expected to increase worldwide, making the establishment of preventive strategies for dementia an urgent issue. Several modifiable risk factors for dementia are known, and multidomain interventions that simultaneously intervene in multiple risks are becoming mainstream. This review aimed to overview multidomain intervention trials reported to date and ongoing trials regarding current challenges and future goals. Five multidomain intervention trials were published between 2015 and 2019, including the Finnish Geriatric Inte

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are risk factors for severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular complications. The burden of RSV disease among adults with CVD is not yet fully understood and evidence remains to be consolidated through a systematic approach. Covering the publication period from January 1, 2000 to November 28, 2023, this systematic literature review documented RSV disease burden among adults ≥18 years with CVD including heart failure (HF), ischemic heart disease (IHD), and non-specified CVD. Relevant publications were ret

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a worldwide public health problem that increases the risk of chronic diseases. In 2016, more than 340 million children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 years were living with overweight or obesity.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of interventions using digital technology - that is, interventions applied to achieve health objectives implemented within any digital application, communication, or system - for the integrated management of obesity in children and adolescents. Specifically, to assess the effects of digital interventions in the management of

BACKGROUND: In 2022, WHO recommended single-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination as an alternative schedule to multidose regimens. To provide evidence to support approval of a single-dose indication for the AS04-adjuvanted bivalent HPV vaccine (Cervarix, GlaxoSmithKline), we investigated whether the immune response to a single dose of the bivalent vaccine in girls aged 9-14 years was non-inferior to the immune response to three doses of the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil-4, Merck) in women aged 18-25 years, a dose and population combination with demonstrated efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that impairs the quality of life of affected paediatric patients and their families. Dupilumab, an antagonist of the shared alpha chain subunit of the cytokines interleukin-4 and interleukin-13, has revolutionised the management of moderate-to-severe AD by effectively targeting type 2 inflammation. However, live attenuated vaccines, including live attenuated influenza vaccines (LAIVs), are contraindicated during dupilumab therapy owing to limited safety data. This restriction poses challenges to immunisation strategi

BACKGROUND: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Africa, yet integration of hypertension treatment in HIV clinics is sub-optimal. Cost-effective strategies to implement evidence-based hypertension care for this population are urgently needed to preserve the life-expectancy gains of antiretroviral therapy.
METHODS: Building on insights gained from a comprehensive mixed-methods formative assessment, we used a human-centered design approach to develop a multi-component HIV-HTN integration (HTN-PLUS) strategy. In

BackgroundHIV-PrEP is a key component of HIV combination prevention and has been routinely available through oral formulations (i.e. oral tablets) across sexual health services (SHSs) in the UK since 2020. We used data from a large, online community survey to assess the acceptability and preference of different HIV-PrEP modalities among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and gender-diverse individuals living in the UK.MethodsUsing data collected from the 'Reducing inequalities in Sexual Health' (RiiSH) survey, an online community survey of 1106 GBMSM and gender-diverse

Real world data is an increasingly utilized resource for post-market monitoring of vaccines and provides insight into real world effectiveness. However, heterogeneous mechanisms may drive observed breakthrough infections among vaccinated individuals, such as waning vaccine-induced immunity or the emergence of a new strain against which the vaccine has reduced protection. Analyses of breakthrough infection incidence rates are typically predicated on a presumed temporal mechanism in their choice of an "analytic time zero" after which infection rates are modeled. In this work, we propose a test t

IMPORTANCE: The high-dose inactivated influenza vaccine (HD-IIV) has demonstrated superior protection against laboratory-confirmed influenza infection vs standard-dose IIV (SD-IIV); however, data regarding its effectiveness against cardiovascular (CV) outcomes are mainly from observational studies or specific high-risk groups.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of HD-IIV vs SD-IIV against CV outcomes in the general older adult population in Denmark.

OBJECTIVE: Dispositional constructs (personality traits, generalized beliefs) are associated with health behaviors, but few studies test potential underlying mechanisms. The current study tested an integrated theoretical model specifying indirect effects of personality traits (conscientiousness, extraversion) and socio-political beliefs (trust in political leaders and health authorities) on initial participation, and subsequent trajectories, in COVID-19 preventive behaviors (handwashing, physical distancing, limiting social contact, mask wearing) mediated by social cognition constructs (attitu

COVID-19 containment measures reduced older adults' healthcare access, with uncertain long-term effects on cognitive, physical, and mental health. To investigate whether reductions in primary and specialist healthcare service use during the pandemic were associated with changes in cognitive, physical, and mental health in community-dwelling older adults, with attention to sex differences. Data from the Norwegian Trøndelag Health Study collected before (HUNT4 70 + , 2017-2019) and after the pandemic (HUNT AiT, 2021-2023) included 5387 participants (53% women) aged 70 + . Background and Objectives: Lung cancer (LC) remains a significant global health issue with poor prognosis. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused delays in cancer patient management worldwide. However, its impact on the incidence of LCs in Romania has not yet been discussed. We aimed to evaluate the impact of lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic on new LC diagnoses in a Romanian cohort and the potential associations between demographic characteristics and histological features. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 750 patients with lung tumors diagnosed in the Patho

INTRODUCTION: Although the population was aging, interstitial lung disease mortality had remained relatively stable until it rose following the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Despite the consistent overall mortality trend prior to the pandemic, significant demographic and geographic disparities persist across the country.
METHODS: Disparities in ILD-related mortality were analyzed temporally using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiological Research (CDC WONDER) database. Using ICD Codes J84.1, J84.8, and J84.9 ILD-related crude mortali

BACKGROUND: The NHS has pledged to reduce staff attrition to address its widening workforce gap, which has been exacerbated by understaffing and the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence suggests that staff from some minoritised groups may be at greater risk of attrition post-pandemic. However, a gap in the literature means there is no clear overview of current organisation-level NHS staff retention policies aimed at addressing this problem. We sought to address this with a horizon scanning exercise undertaken as part of a wider study aiming to support the development of policies to improve retention of

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are highly prevalent in adults with ADHD. Sleep problems and ADHD symptoms can cause, amplify, and maintain each other. We studied the effects of additive treatment for sleep problems on self-reported symptoms of ADHD as primary outcome, with subscales of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity, objective, performance-based ADHD symptoms, sleep quality, fatigue, and depressive symptoms as secondary outcomes.
METHODS: Preliminary open-label randomized controlled trial of adult patients diagnosed with ADHD and a positive screening for at least one sleep disorder. Pa

Fusion-associated small transmembrane (FAST) proteins are viral nonstructural proteins that mediate cell-cell fusion to form multinucleated syncytia. We previously reported that human species B rotavirus NSP1-1 is a FAST protein that induces syncytia in primate epithelial cells but not rodent fibroblasts. We hypothesized that NSP1-1 proteins of other rotavirus species could mediate cell-cell fusion but might be limited to cell types derived from homologous hosts. To test this hypothesis, we predicted the structure and domain organization of NSP1-1 of species B rotavirus from a human, goat, and

Post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-infection (PASC) is challenging to diagnose and treat, and its molecular pathophysiology remains unclear. Urinary peptidomics can provide valuable information on urine peptides that may enable improved and specified PASC diagnosis. Using standardized capillary electrophoresis-MS, we examined the urinary peptidomes of 50 patients with PASC 10 months after COVID-19 and 50 controls, including healthy individuals (n = 42) and patients with non-COVID-19-associated myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) (n =
