Assessing the association of type 2 diabetes with skin health status: a study of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence to suggest that alterations in skin health often co-occur with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Despite their clinical relevance, skin conditions are often underdiagnosed in diabetes care. This study applied variable selection methods to identify key dermatological factors linked to T2D and examined their direct and indirect associations. DESIGN: Prospective birth cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: This study analysed data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, including 1906 participants (1024 women, 882 men) at ages 31 a

Chronic eczematous eruptions of aging: a clinical practice review.

Chronic eczematous skin disorders that first appear in later life are poorly characterized, partly because existing terminology is inconsistent and often conflates morphologic descriptors with specific diagnoses. This review introduces chronic eczematous eruptions of aging (CEEsA) as an umbrella term, summarizes current knowledge on its epidemiology, etiologies, and clinical presentation, outlines best practices in management, and highlights gaps requiring further investigation. CEEsA frequently present as ill defined, intensely pruritic eruptions on the trunk and extensor limbs, are often ref

Foot Mycoses Among Tanzanian Footballers: A Clinico-Epidemiological Study.

BACKGROUND: Superficial foot mycoses (SFM), including onychomycosis and tinea pedis, are common fungal infections among athletes, particularly professional footballers, owing to repetitive trauma, occlusive footwear, communal facilities, and hygiene practices. These infections may cause discomfort, nail deformity, and impaired athletic performance. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence, clinical spectrum, and factors associated with SFM among professional footballers in the Tanzanian Premier League between 13th August 2024 to 12th August 2025. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional stu

Tinea Manuum Caused by Trichophyton benhamiae Following Exposure to a Pet Guinea Pig in the United States.

Tinea manuum may result from direct contact with animals infected with zoophilic dermatophytes. We present a case of tinea manuum in a 32-year-old woman caused by Trichophyton benhamiae, an emerging fungal pathogen frequently associated with guinea pig exposure. This case highlights a potentially unique pattern of zoonotic transmission, encourages clinicians to consider T. benhamiae in the differential diagnosis of inflammatory tinea manuum, and underscores the importance of advanced diagnostic methods for accurate fungal identification.

A trichromatic diagnostic pattern in inverse pityriasis versicolor: clinical, dermoscopic, and Wood's lamp correlation.

Dear Editor, Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial mycosis caused by Malassezia species and most often affects the trunk and upper limbs. Flexural or inverse variants, however, may differ markedly from classical morphology due to the influence of moisture, temperature, and friction. These atypical presentations frequently mimic erythrasma, candidal intertrigo, tinea cruris, seborrheic dermatitis, and pigmentary disorders. [...].

Clinical evaluation of a rapid antigen detection test for the diagnosis of tinea unguium.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, diagnosis of dermatophyte onychomycosis relies on direct microscopic examination (DME) and fungal cultures of nail material. Herein, we aim to evaluate the clinical performance of the rapid antigen detection (RAD) assay PreventID Dermatophyte in comparison to conventional methods for the diagnosis of tinea unguium. METHODS: Between February and July 2024, 48 nail samples, collected at the Navarra University Hospital, Spain, were included in the evaluation. In addition to DME and culture, the RAD test was executed. In case of discrepancies, the qPCR assay Novaplex™ Der

Prevalence and clinical characteristics of dermatophytosis in rheumatoid arthritis according to DMARD therapy.

Our primary aim was to evaluate the relationship between dermatophytosis and disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This prospective study was conducted in a rheumatology clinic between September 2024 and March 2025. All participants were examined for cutaneous fungal infections by a dermatologist. The study included 80 patients and 40 immunocompetent healthy controls. The most common clinical form of dermatophytosis was tinea unguium, followed by tinea pedis, in both the RA and control groups. There were no significant differences betw

Tinea corporis and tinea cruris incidence, risk factors, and treatments in a cohort of 6.8 million patients with Medicaid, United States.

Tinea corporis and tinea cruris are common dermatophyte infections of increasing public health concern, yet national US data are limited. We estimated incidence, risk factors, and diagnostic and treatment practices among a large Medicaid-insured outpatient cohort. Among ∼6 800 000 enrollees, 54 108 were diagnosed with tinea corporis (79.1/10 000 person-years) and 8386 with tinea cruris (12.2/10 000 person-years). Tinea corporis primarily affected young children and Black patients, while tinea cruris was prevalent among middle-aged men. Overall, <10% received diagnostic testing, and 7%-10% were

Eruptive inflammatory tinea corporis: a case report highlighting the role of molecular testing on formalin-fixed tissue in confirming the causative species.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytosis is a fungal skin infection most commonly caused by members of the genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton, though there are 7 genera currently described including Arthroderma, Nannizzia, Paraphyton and Lophophyton. These filamentous fungi survive in the stratum corneum of the hair, skin, or nails of their host by metabolizing keratin. Dermatophyte skin infections can be acquired from direct contact with the skin of infected individuals or animals, fomite transmission, contaminated soil, or autoinfection from other infected body sites. These fungal skin
