INTRODUCTION: Currently, diagnosis of dermatophyte onychomycosis relies on direct microscopic examination (DME) and fungal cultures of nail material. Herein, we aim to evaluate the clinical performance of the rapid antigen detection (RAD) assay PreventID Dermatophyte in comparison to conventional methods for the diagnosis of tinea unguium.
METHODS: Between February and July 2024, 48 nail samples, collected at the Navarra University Hospital, Spain, were included in the evaluation. In addition to DME and culture, the RAD test was executed. In case of discrepancies, the qPCR assay Novaplex™ Der

Our primary aim was to evaluate the relationship between dermatophytosis and disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This prospective study was conducted in a rheumatology clinic between September 2024 and March 2025. All participants were examined for cutaneous fungal infections by a dermatologist. The study included 80 patients and 40 immunocompetent healthy controls. The most common clinical form of dermatophytosis was tinea unguium, followed by tinea pedis, in both the RA and control groups. There were no significant differences betw

Dermatophytosis is a common skin infection worldwide. In recent years, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. indotineae has rapidly emerged as a leading cause of recalcitrant dermatophytosis. Iran shows high genetic diversity within the T. mentagrophytes complex, suggesting local emergence of new genotypes, yet nationwide data remain limited. We performed a one-year multicentre, hospital-based survey of referred cases (September 2023-September 2024) in nine provinces of Iran to describe the current epidemiology of dermatophytosis and to analyse mutations in the squalene epoxidase (SQLE) gene associ

Dermatophytosis is commonly caused by anthropophilic or zoophilic fungi. Although factors related to the disease onset have been identified, it is unclear whether these factors influence disease prevalence differently depending on the fungus's ecological niche. Our study aimed to determine the epidemiological characteristics of dermatophytosis caused by anthropophilic versus zoophilic agents. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study (1976-2015) including confirmed cases of dermatophytosis diagnosed by positive mycological cultures in patients treated at the Institute of Tropical Medicine

PURPOSE: Effective treatment of onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes (i.e. Trichophyton Microsporum and Epidermophyton) requires species identification and long-term systemic treatment. Traditional diagnosis of onychomycosis is based on KOH microscopy and fungal culture which have their own limitations. Molecular diagnostic methods such as real-time PCR offer shorter turnaround time, species identification and higher sensitivity. This study intended to define diagnostic ability of real-time PCR for dermatophyte detection in Indian patients with onychomycosis.
METHODS: Nail samples from 65 cl

BACKGROUND: Few ex vivo studies have investigated the virulence factors of fungi causing onychomycosis. The effect of nail polish in predisposing or protecting against onychomycosis remains debatable.
OBJECTIVES: This ex vivo study aimed to identify the nail invasion ability of dermatophytes, non-dermatophytes and yeast, with and without nail polishing, in the nails of young and elderly individuals.
METHODS: Six fungal species were tested: dermatophytes (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum canis), non-dermatophytes (Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, Fusarium spp.) and Candida albica

Epidemiological studies combining taxonomic and clinical data have been limited globally, particularly Guiyang, the most under-developed economic provincial capital city in southwestern China. A retrospective analysis was performed of dermatophyte epidemiology involving all culture-positive cases received between May 2017 and May 2023 at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted on 391 dermatophyte isolates collected from patients using the rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequences. Clinical relevance information was analyzed statistically usin

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In an 18- to 24-month Treatment Phase with once-daily efinaconazole 10% solution, subjects with onychomycosis showed an increased rate of cure at Month 24 versus the phase III trials. In order to further improve efficacy, we initiated an extended intermittent efinaconazole Maintenance Phase with use 2-3 times weekly for an additional 24 months from Month 24 to Month 48. These are the first data presented for a 48-month efinaconazole use period.
METHODS: For patients completing 18-24 months of once-daily efinaconazole, the target great toenail from the Treatment Phase wa

Lesional nails of 10 patients with onychomycosis (tinea unguium) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to gain an insight into in vivo morphological changes of dermatophytes after application of a clinical dosage of topical luliconazole (LLCZ) 5% nail solution. In these cases, Trichophyton rubrum (T. rubrum) was identified in three cases and T. interdigitale was identified in four cases (three unidentified cases; we were unable to identify either the genus or species). Specimens from tinea unguium before and after topical LLCZ application (maximum of 14 days) were observe

Fungal nail infections in children and adolescents are on the rise worldwide. Diagnosis and, above all, treatment is a challenge. A 15-year-old girl had been suffering from onychomycosis of the toenails for more than 6 years, and later also of a fingernail on her right hand. Trichophyton (T.) rubrum had already been identified by culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as the pathogen years ago. However, treatment attempts with topical antimycotics and fluconazole did not lead to a cure. Mycological diagnostics using PCR and sequencing of the ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) region of the

In recent years, the lifespans of individuals with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) have progressed with the development of medical care and nursing practices. Respiratory disorders account for a large proportion of medical care for younger individuals with SMID, while the proportion of gastrointestinal and urinary system diseases increases with the aging of this population. Various efforts are being made to improve quality of life (QOL), including for the families of patients with SMID in medical care, but few reports have examined issues of foot care, particularly onychomyco

UNLABELLED: Superficial fungal infections in children are less prevalent compared with adults, and there are limited data on epidemiology in Northern Europe. This study retrospectively observed the epidemiological factors and treatment patterns of these infections in children in Northern Finland between 2000 and 2021. Patients under 18 years diagnosed with superficial tinea infections at the dermatology outpatient clinic of Oulu University Hospital were included in the study. During the study period, there were 94 cases fulfilling the inclusion criteria. The most common infections were tinea u

Terbinafine (TBF) and azoles are commonly used to treat fungal infections such as tinea pedis and tinea unguium. TBF-resistant Trichophyton species have been increasingly reported globally; however, the research has primarily focused on Trichophyton rubrum. In other words, there are limited studies that exist on other causative Trichophyton species, such as Trichophyton interdigitale, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Trichophyton indotineae. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and resistance mechanisms of TBF-resistant Trichophyton isolates in Japan. Screening of 701 clinical isolates

Toenail onychomycosis causes significant problems in public health and is more common among the elderly and immune-compromised populations. A previous culture-based survey of communal finely ground toenails from the east coast of Australia isolated 125 T. interdigitale but only one T. rubrum. This paucity of T. rubrum was surprising because it is one of the most common dermatophytes isolated worldwide. Our aim was to find out if T. rubrum was present but not cultured. DNA was extracted from ground toenails from the same samples. New specific primers were designed for the ITS region of T. rubru

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dermatophytosis is a significant worldwide health concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Tinea unguium (TU) and Tinea capitis (TC) are among the most prevalent clinical manifestations of dermatophytosis caused by several dermatophyte fungi. This study investigated the molecular epidemiology and distribution of dermatophytes causing TU and TC in Tehran, Iran.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 2023 to March 2024, a clinical mycology center in Tehran received 342 suspected cases of TU and TC. The diagnostic methods included the conventional and mole
